Star Ocean 5: Integrity and Faithlessness Review Thread

I expect I will enjoy the game anyway, since I liked the last two despite most people having lots of issues with both of them, Looking forward to playing it tomorrow.

People acting like their dog died in here....don't care still getting it and probably gonna love it.

Doesn't matter. The game is getting shit reviews and will probably sell poorly and thus be the final Star Ocean installment.

*sighs* I'm pretty depressed about this. Lunar never got a 3, Suikoden is dead thanks to Trashnami, and now SO5 is dead. All that's left is Tales of We Need A New Engine. :(

Edit: How is this game getting worse reviews than 4? Has anyone said it's a worse game than 4?

So far scoring worse than Zestiria.

This quote from the Gamespot review is really weird.

If you came to this game seeking the epic sci-fi glory of the series' early years, this is not the Star Ocean you are looking for.

If there's one thing that SO5 is very, very successful at, it's hearkening back to Star Ocean 1. The devs specifically targeted that, and they hit it. SO1 was not an epic sci-fi story by any means.

The reviews seem to mimic what I have read from Japanese impressions not on GAF. As a past Star Ocean fan I had hopes that this game would turn out to be good. But it looks like my hopes really did fall flat. I'm just going to return my copy from Amazon when it gets here. With TMS out and ZTD 3 coming, I have no need for this game.

Why!! Why!? Did u bring this up lol. If star ocean v fails. 2 out of the 3 of my favorite jrpgs will be done and the third has been on a decline since vesperia

That and Square transforming all of their games into Kingdom Hearts.

I was going to look forward to a PC version, but maybe there shouldn't be a PC version. I hope World of Final Fantasy turn out ok. Come on Square.

I think they're referring to SO2, since the west didn't receive SO1 until the PSP remake. And I'd definitely classify SO2 as "epic sci-fi".

How did exist archive turn out in Japan. I don't really remember hearing anything about it

It scored 8/8/8/9 in Famitsu which is encouraging. It also has the whole spiritual successor to Valkyrie Profile thing going for it so I'm expecting decent scores in the west. Though I thought the same about Star Ocean.

But that's not what the devs were referring to when they talked about returning to the roots of the series, so you've got mixed messaging. And I'm assuming that the Gamespot reviewer is referring to what the devs had been saying about the game leading up to release, because they said it a lot.

Honestly that's about what I expected. Other than the seamless combat, nothing has impressed me about the game.

I wish Square would bring the ps4 port of SO2 in NA and EU. With how Star Ocean 5 is received, if it was in their plans I assume they'll just can it.

Still looking forward to playing this game when I receive my copy today but the low scores won't help the series future.

Ouch. Was really looking forward to this too. Absolutely loved star ocean 3 even in spite of the crazy plot twist.
maybe because of it

Star ocean 4 was not so great.

Well at least zero time dilemma also comes out this week.

This is unfortunate... I was planning to buy this tomorrow but it it kind of sucks... well I already have enough games to play as it is (by a factor of about 100X). Being in Canada , it also costs 80$ ... so maybe I'll just wait until it's inevitably marked down to 40$ or ... maybe less ?

It's unfortunate I guess because part of my reason for buying this was to simply show support for more classic styled JRPGs but... well maybe I'll buy I am Setsuna for that instead. It also looks pretty good.

Worse than SO4..?

None of the reviewers seem to like it less than SO4 from what I've seen, but they're certainly sending the message that it's worse with these scores. Too bad, some people who were going to like it are going to miss out.

Looks like it's not even going to review as well as tales of zesty. Gotta at least put some effort into making the characters likable if your story is shit and your game content starved tri-ace.

It can't be worse than ToZ can it? Anyway, pretty shocked about the low scores and I had already planned to pick it up. I was excited for a shorter jRPG but I'm a little disheartened now. I can't imagine the sites giving it 5's play for the battles alone.

I'll still get it; definitely seems like one of those games where reviews won't matter much and certain fans will appreciate it.

Welp. Next time try making a better game, Square-Enix/Tri-Ace. If there is a next time. (And before you complain, no, I'm not going to buy a bad game in the hopes that they get it right in the future.)

Wait, what?

It's currently worse than SO4 in metacritic. I'm conflicted..

Just come to Steam already so we can preserve the franchise together.

Oh shit I was not expecting scores that low. I wasn't expecting anything amazing, maybe some 7's and 6's but good damn this is disappointing to see. I already have TMS#FE which I was gonna finish first and then jump into this one afterwards (my copy has already shipping from Amazon), but now I thinking I may just return it when it gets here.

I knew this game wouldn't review well, but they're still lower (and more scathing) than I thought they would.

The people that I know that imported it enjoyed it, so I have a feeling it's one of those games that is hated by critics but fans of the series and genre will find enjoyment with.

Just stating facts. This time last year I was all happy about the state of Japanese RPGs but now I'm relying on Final Fantasy like that was ever even in my Top 5 favorite J-RPG franchises. >_<

"No one" in the west remembers SO1, though. It's Star Ocean 2 that had the impact Stateside. Was that not the case in Japan?

At least SO4 had a fun battle system which 5 doesn't have. Based on my experience with import copy. Couldn't even finish the game because it was so damn boring and felt like a chore most of the time. Seriously regret spending 70 bucks on this...

Reviews are probably lower than SO4 because it's been 7 years and standards are higher. SO4 would probably get 3's and 4's these days.

Yeah, I mean, I'm going to love this game I think, but it's going to be kind of sad that this will almost certainly be it, aside from something like that F2P Material Trader. Hope people support it better than Japan anyways.

Yeah, I'm picking it up tomorrow still. I actually really liked Infinite Undiscovery so I guess I'm weird.

I feel bad the game is getting dogpiled with negative attention on here and reviews. I want to believe!

Pretty surprised by how low this is scoring. The positive impressions in the import OT sounded well-measured and managed to excite me as someone who has little to no attachment to the series beyond trying SO4 briefly. Can't say these reviews have swayed me from picking the game up like I'd intended, but it sounds like it was hard for many to stomach something so drastically scaled back from its most recent entries.
