Or maybe they are frozen/stored on Earth and revived there instead of on the Botany Bay? While this may not be a Khan reboot, it is really really looking like one - which is unfortunate.

Well going by the rules of the two timelines that wouldn't be the case. Botany Bay would have always taken off from Earth the way it did.

No, if you're going to do an established franchise on HBO then do a big budget remake of Babylon 5, since that was a show that:

1. Was fucking amazing
2. Was built with arcs in mind
3. Has a more interesting and well constructed universe

But I'd rather just see a new HBO SF from no established franchise so that the creators had room to breathe and include as many sex scenes as they wanted without feeling like a betrayal of a beloved series.

Babylon 5's brand value is zero compared to Trek.

DS9 was basically Star Trek: Babylon 5. They can definitely do another good Trek series based on story arcs.

so, so true. But I am not sure even HBO could ever match the Londo-G'Kar pairing.
RIP Andreas Katsulas

How was Battlestar Galactica's brand value before the reboot?

I'm really loving this new Trek series of films. I didn't like any of the TNG movies (including First Contact), so ST09 was a real treat for me. I'm really looking forward to this film, and Bruce Greenwood's opening dialogue was just awesome in this trailer. I really enjoy him being Kirk's mentor in this new reality.

I can also imagine that a lot of people in Star Fleet probably hate Kirk's guts, and thinks he's not up for the job of captain. Should be a great movie for that story arc alone.

I think the behind the scenes went something like this. JJ & Friends originally wanted Khan for the sequel and cast Benecio Del Toro. Del Toro dropped out and when they started looking for actors and liked Cumberbatch they decided to rewrite the script so it was Gary Mitchell instead and cast him for the part. Then the studio took a look at it and said no way jose to having a villian named "Gary Mitchell" so the story was rewritten again this time with Cumberbatch playing a new villain.

That would explain the leaks over the past year as well.

Well, why would Del Toro drop out?

Or it's still Khan and he's white now.

Which is...?

This. It's totally Spock and Khan.

Kirk hangs out in a black shirt for a large part of the first movie - they all wear black beneath their red/yellow/blue tunics. And then there's the quote during the trailer saying (paraphrased) "you will get yourself and everyone under your command killed". But not if he makes the ultimate sacrifice.

Just sayin'.

I'm telling you guys it's the evil imaginary astronaut from The Savage Curtain. He's evil and he's in space.

Surak and Abraham Lincoln return to inspire the Enterprise crew unto final victory. Lincoln is going to make STID win Best Picture.

Just watched this again. Really love the final line and how (in my mind anyways), he's talking about the crew of the Enterprise, Kirk's adopted "family".

I guess we're just ignoring his mom, brother, and alcoholic uncle/step-father (still unsure of who Grunberg is supposed to be)?

Just saw the preview in IMAX 3D before the screening of Hobbit. Is this where we discuss that?

Anyway, I thought the preview was terribly shot. Too many fast moving and shakey camera scenes. It was very hard to focus on what was going on and the gf (who is prone to motion sickness) felt queasy throughout the clip.

It's interesting that this thread has barely six pages and a couple of days. I'd have thought this trailer and the IMAX preview would have produced a bigger thread than this. Especially with all the 'Is it Khan?' talk.

The Man Of Steel trailer 2 thread got six pages well within twenty four hours.

And no. I'm not using this 'metric' to suggest the film will bomb so everyone chill out.

Unlikely. I think all the back and forth about who the antagonist is is part and parcel of the 'Abrams publicity machine'. The man knows who to stoke the flames of fanboy speculation and can push the TREK audience's buttons like a maestro.

I seriously doubt that the script could change the identity of the villain so readily given the nature of the VFX such changes would take. You can't change these things like spinning on a dime.

So, I went to see the Hobbit yesterday and realised that this move got the TDKR treatment when it comes to divulging a portion of the movie. Looked good.

Probably because we had already discussed pretty much everything else in the topic for the teaser that was started only a couple weeks ago that was closed before this topic, the extended trailer didn't exactly give us a whole lot more to work with and discuss past what has already been said.

Man of Steel on the other hand just had its first proper trailer and its teaser was a few months ago.

This. We talked ourselves silly in the previous thread, and at this point we need more info to get it going again. The new trailer didn't add any new fuel to the fire.

Man of Steel looks like crap, by the way.

+1

Including the opinion on Man of Steel

You're right, that's certainly a factor. Truth be told I'd forgotten that Paramount had released an announcement teaser for this trailer and that particular thread hit 37 pages.

But even still it was the second (or first after the 'teaser') Man Of Steel trailer and this was the first look we'd gotten at Into Darkness and I was just surprised that MOS seemed to be generating more 'noise' here on GAF.

It's just that if you had told me that the second MOS trailer would provoke more discussion that the (combined threads of the) first look at Into Darkness I'm not sure I'd have agreed with you.

That's all.

Saw the Hobbit last night in LIeMAX 3D 48FPS but of course the real attraction was the 9 minute preview.

I loved every second of it though it was certainly less satisfying than the two Batman advance previews. I had forgotten how great the new theme is.

The 'new synopsis' sounds like crap, WTF are they doing (beware story spoilers from the new synopsis):

"Kirk is this time forced into a rash decision that breaks a critical Starfleet command, puts his crew in danger & costs him his captain’s chair. Now out of uniform and dressed down in space civvies of black leather jackets and boots, our three heroes have separated from the Enterprise and headed off on a mission to try and rectify his mistake…"

I mean WTF, why cant we just get a Star Trek movie with Kirk as captain on board of the Enterprise?

"Well congratulations you got yourself caught! Now what's the next step in your masterplan?"

"Crashing this space-plane"

I see, he learned from
