I'm going to wager the opening move of the space battle we see, whether some infiltrators have planted bombs to prevent fighters from launching, or enemy ships immediately attack the hangars. Think like the Japanese attack on Pearl Harbour - trying to disable or cripple the target before it can mount a full response.

I don't think Jedis are exactly "vague lore" when it comes to Star Wars lol

You have to consider and take into account all that has happened since ROTJ though. This isnt teen wide eyed Luke any more. This is the old man version of Luke who has seen and gone through some serious shit. He has a reason to be weary of Jedi now.

There is still a chance for him to take back what he says at the end of the trailer though. It is gonna be interesting to see where the story goes. Does he really think the Jedi should end? Or will he realize that Jedi are the only ones that can save the galaxy?

Cut to scene: Finn then flies off to find Rey. Last intel on her was her being frozen in carbonite, held by the First Order.

Writes itself. Glad I had this original thought. Will forward to Disney since they have 8 months before release they can reshoot the end.
 
So the shot of the book shelf, it's surrounded by strange rock formations that look the same as the cave Luke is exiting at the end. So that's Luke's bookshelf, he's been reading. Is this the first book in Star Wars movie history?
 
The negative reaction on this thread is honestly baffling to me. That was a pretty good introduction to the vibe of the movie. We don't really need story bits yet.

As for the ESB comparisons-- we already knew Luke was going to train Rey at the end of TFA. The only other similarities I see (other than ones in-line with any other Star Wars movie) is the fact that it's downbeat... Because it's the middle chapter of a trilogy, and it basically has to be.
 
Its gonna be the inverse of ESB training. Rsther than rushing off to save friends, Luke now wants the Jedi to go away. Rey will be training herself to inspire Luke to come out for One Last Job.
Think everyone is reaching with grey stuff. Gonna be Rey that rebuilds the Jedi Order

My view was always that Luke essentially became a bodhisattva in that moment when he saved Anakin. I wouldn't mind if his character growth stopped there, because nothing more was needed. He became enlightened, and from that point on he should've been just been an archetype. That was part of my problem with Luke in the old EU as well.

Lol vague hints? It's anything but vague, that final line hits with the subtlety of a semi truck. That line plus the title of the movie suggests a paradigm shift for the "rules" of Star Wars, nothing really "hinted" it's stated.

My original point was that it's the opposite of safe. Even a casual fan can hear about Jedi going extinct and recognize how unsafe that idea is.

I mean the whole point of the teaser was to get you to rethink your entire expectations for the trilogy by throwing curveballs.

The notion that that is somehow safe is absurd.

I think they are borrowing some of the aspects from the old EU as there were many different interpretations of the force besides light and dark.

I think it's fine to go with the approach where enlightenment sometime happens in singular moments, and we must constantly strive to extend it across our entire lives.

Exactly.

You have to take into account what has happened to Luke since the end of his hero's journey at the end of RoTJ.

He's probably come to the conclusion that being a Jedi doesn't do anything but put a target, not only on your own back, but on everyone and everything you care about also. And its time to end that shit.

My guess is that Luke concludes that as long there are Jedi, there will be Sith.

He has to end the cycle and let the Force be just the Force. No sides, no interpretations.

Just be.
