In case you missed it, Starbound is coming out of Early Access on 22 July, 2016.

After ~5 years, the game we set out to make finally exists, and to say that it all feels a bit surreal would be a massive understatement!

While Starbound will be finished in two weeks, this isn’t the end. We will continue to update and support Starbound for as long as we can. We’ve got loads of cool ideas we couldn’t fit into 1.0 but hope to put into future updates.

Thanks again for all your support over the years! You’ve stuck with us, and it means so much.

Look out for more info over the next couple of weeks!

oooh wow good for them! this was actually my first early access purchase and will most likely be my last. i bought it a few year ago and realized I'd much rather play the game when its complete. I know they added a bunch of content since i last played it but i just couldn't possibly care less about it anymore. Maybe I'll force myself to give it a shot, it might click afterall.

Despite the rocky start toward the beginning, they stuck it out. Been two years since I last played, but I'll check it out.

For those who played it recently, is it a good focused game? Or is it aimless without any plot like terraria?

I'll play it a little I guess. The underground exploration during the beta was really boring though. I hope the team managed to improve that aspect.

Both. It has a pretty big story with quests, dungeons (where you can't alter the environment) + more. Also has randomly generated sidequests on populated planets, colony building, pets. And of course you have all the freedom of something like Terreria too.

They have improved it tons. They have added lots of underground dungeons, massively reworked how caves are formed for more interesting layouts. Many quests will have objectives underground and they have added new tools such as a grappling hook and much improved upgradeable matter manipulator.

Well there was like an update a year ago... or maybe two years ago, where they had this questing system and linear level feature where you couldn't break blocks.

There is a clear progression in the game, but it wasn't too long the last time I played it.

OMFG

so ready to dive back in.

I remember reading that they are going to implement steam multiplayer. Is that going to be ready come July 22?

if so, fucking megaton, setting up a server is such ass

About 4 years too late.

I was sooo super psyched about this game.. It looked awesome. It came out early access, and I figured I'd wait it out till the real deal came... Then it appeared that they weren't really doing updates and it seemed to peter out, becoming a textbook version of development limbo that happens to most early access games.. My question is, will this really be the full game they promised, or are they just polishing off an unfinished game (also like a lot of early access titles)

edit: It appears I've been corrected. Well now I'm definitely looking forward to it!!

wow i never thought seeing the day but there it is..right now i am going to play the full game then congratulations chucklefish it was a long journey!

Starbound has certainly come a long way, and holy shit, it's a very different beast from when it first launched on early access, and so much better now. Seeing the constant updates and seeing the game evolve has been a fascinating journey.

1.0 is set to basically implement a full main story questline with a focus on exploring on specific types of planets. I'm playing the unstable version right now, and the story quests are pretty neat so far, with a bit of a focus on examining various objects in towns and villages after a certain point with a look mechanic akin to classic adventure games, which more games should have, IMO.

Incidentally, it was originally planned to be individual story lines for each playable race, but the devs apparently decided to consolidate all of it into a single focused storyline, which was probably for the best.

They seem to have added a bucketload of content over the past year. Can't wait to try it out! Bought this when it came out but when I saw how unfinished it was I put it on the backburner. Will for sure give it a spin when it releases.

They have been releasing nightly builds for like two years. The amount of new stuff they have added is amazing and they have rebuilt pretty much every system in the game.

Some of the new stuff:

The updates never petered out, they've been doing regular updates on the game's dev blog and the devs have kept unstable and nightly branches active for players to check out. The sheer amount of changes and additions between its first EA release and 1.0 is mind-boggling.

Wow its been a long time since I played Starbound. I played for about a week when it first went into early access, then decided I'll wait until it's released. No idea what's even in the game now.

I had completely forgotten about this game, wow.

Guessing the Vita version is probably a big fat no at this point, but I'll probably pick up on Steam down the line.

... Well, I'll be damned. The video combat is especially awesome, they added a lot of good ideas for weapons and special techniques. Also that car is really cool.

I'm still relatively apathetic (no need to rant on the numerous reasons Chucklefish disappointed me with how they handled this game), but I guess I'm willing to give this game a chance once it is finally released as a complete product.

Put about 30 hours into it in 2013 [had to to check my Steam library how long it's been], but went cold turkey when they character whiped twice. After seeing all my progression whiped a second time I swore I'd never play this again until it's done.

I guess the time has come.

Excellent. Probably the one game I've put far too many hours into farming. Played loads of the early access and put it down for 1.0. Excited to get back in.

Been so fucking long, I hope they made it right.
Haven't played since Winter update or something, and even then I only played for some hours.

Been a long long journey but they've made one hell of game with so much great content and systems. Can't wait to have a final release I can really dig into and go nuts with instead of the occasional toying with nightly builds every few weeks or months like I have been for so long now.

I'll give it a whirl I guess, last time I played it I felt like a lot of the changes kinda ruined the game, mostly the exploring felt super unrewarding and samey.

Then the last time I played before that was that nice period of about a year when they didn't release any updates and if you asked about it on the forums they'd ban you and lock the thread.

It's been a fun trip with this game.

Does any keen or kind person here know if there will be more save wipes after 1.0 or are we past that bit of beta business?

Believe that's been a non factor for quite some time now. Unless for some odd reason they choose to introduce some seriously massive changes post launch it should not be a worry.

So if you go in deep after 1.0 you should be totally fine.

I was a backed this back when it was announced, but haven't played it in a year or two, time to check them update logs

Just tried the unstable build now that they have the story portion out. Holy shit, extremely unexpected.

Edit: Now I know what the hell happened and why you are on the ship! :P

I didnt know the story bits were already in place on the unstable build. Holy shit i was not prepared. The game feels so good right from the start.

This game brought me to that exact same conclusion. Unfortunate that I burned myself out on the game long before it was content complete.

I've logged well over 90 hours so far. But, I haven't touched the game since fall 2015 . I'm happy to jump back in, the game is that good.

I think a lot of changes they made over the course of development were only temporary, like multiple-biome planets are back. Apparently each planet is a lot more unique due to that and other things. I'm gonna try out the unstable build shortly.

Just saw this thread, gimmie a bit to answer some questions;

Maybe I'll force myself to give it a shot, it might click afterall.

You already own it and the last few years have been amazingly good for the game; if you only played it when it first went into Beta, it's pretty much an entirely different game now.

Have they added controller support?

Not yet, from a recent AMA:
Starbound will have full controller support but we need to redo the GUI to work with it. So it won't be in for 1.0. We will likely be bringing controller support from console to PC. (source)

Sweet, it's been ages since I last played it, I'm going to be lost with all the new changes/additions x)

I've been working on the OT lately, and so much has changed over the last few years that all of the stuff I had written up is woefully outdated.

I remember reading that they are going to implement steam multiplayer. Is that going to be ready come July 22?

Good News: In version 1.0, you will finally be able to join multiplayer Starbound servers via your Steam friends list.

I had completely forgotten about this game, wow.

Guessing the Vita version is probably a big fat no at this point, but I'll probably pick up on Steam down the line.

Here's the latest on handheld ports from the most recent AMA:
Q: any plans for handheld platforms? i would love to be able to take this game with me everywhere i go!

A: it's something we'll be examining after console ports. The game has so much going on under the hood that I'm not sure how handheld consoles would manage it from a RAM perspective. The 3DS has so little RAM :(

(source)

Oh good, this means that the PS4 version is probably only another few years away....

Now that the PC version is about to officially launch, console versions are that much closer. Hopefully not a few years, but they are a small, start-up developer so... we'll see.

Is there a list of 1.0 changes? Curious if there's a lot more coming or if the current build is mostly complete.

I'm trying to dig one up now, but it may be a bit too early. Stuff has been changing on a nightly basis for so long that a solid list is kind of hard to put together. I'm hoping the developers actually have a big ass list they'll release soon. A few of them post on GAF, so maybe they'll chime in.

Controller support & UI?

See above; not likely for 1.0 but it's something they want to get in.

Does any keen or kind person here know if there will be more save wipes after 1.0 or are we past that bit of beta business?

After 1.0, the wipes should (obviously there's no 100% airtight guarantee of anything) be over. They did mention on the stream today that a character wipe is incoming, not sure if that includes universes too (I sure hope not). After 1.0 though, it should be all good.

Has there been any progress on the XB1 version?

See above; console stuff has always been on the back burner until the PC version released; hopefully after the 22nd we'll get some news.
