For millenia the Apex were close to human in appearance until breakthrough research into accelerated evolution lead to the creation of the “Vestigi-Evo Process”. The VEP allowed the Apex to trade physical devolution for intellectual evolution.
The Apex operate under a collectivist regime controlled by the Miniknog (The Ministry of Scientific Progression). Each Apex dedicates his life to the survival and progression of the Apex as a whole. The nature of this regime allowed the VEP to be administered species wide in less than 10 years.
The most honored members of Apex society are those chosen by the MiniKnog to donate their bodies to furthering the VEP. Those chosen for the experimentation process are rarely seen again, but their names are said to be inscribed on the wall of the chosen which sits deep within the Ministry.
For a time the MiniKnog received criticism from several prominent Apex for what appeared to be a bias towards selecting only the poorest in society to be members of the chosen. This criticism was silenced however when the critics themselves were selected.
There are whispers of a rebel group ready to denounce the MiniKnog and lead the Apex into revolution. But in Apex society discussion of dissension is punishable by death.

sadly when it was on steam summer sale I trashed talked terraria but looking at this game I would like to give it a try once again. I just found it completely overwhelming
I think Terraria works because it throws tons of disparate content at the player. The overall game design isn't as cohesive or as inspired as Minecraft, but there's so much to do, you won't really mind how frankly amateurish it is in in some ways. Some of the best classic games were/are clones of other games *shrug*
But yeah, sometimes it does seem like too much content.
That unlinked diversity is why I like it better than Minecraft, to be honest. Minecraft requires a high-volume mining operation to sustain combat play due to weapon durability, and high-volume mining or farming to sustain exploration play due to how effort-expensive torches are. Meanwhile, in Terraria, you can log in and do pretty much whatever you want in any given play session other than particular bosses.

So... Minecraft comes out, then Terraria (a fantastic game, by the way) clones it in 2D. Then Starbound is announced and Mojang announces a space-based game the sounds (somewhat) similar. Is that order of events correct? Funny, if so.

Crafting in the game requires that you unlock each item you're going to craft before you craft it, you do this by finding a blueprint which is permanently added to your list of craftable objects.
For example, a chest might contain blueprints for a chair, after you activate the blueprint the chair is added to your list of craftables and you can forever craft that chair if you have the right ingredients.
The player starts off with quite a large list of craftable items. The list of starter items is unique per race. Though players can eventually learn to craft items that belong to other races (particularly by raiding dungeons/villages that belong to that race).
For the most part though, your character choice permeates through the kind of objects you build and thus the kind of materials you'll require most often. This ensures players aren't all after the same set of items and adds an element of team work to the crafting system.
On top of this, often sets of armor/weapons have bonuses based on the race they belong to. An example might be Avian armor reducing fall speed. Again, whilst every race is capable of crafting (and wearing) every other races items (should the player unlock them all), in the early and mid game the race you choose helps to define the armor perks you create and facilitates trading between players of different races to get the stats they want before they're capable of crafting that armor themselves. So we’ve been a little quiet lately because we’ve been working away on the game like mad. It’s coming along really nicely, we’re working on a whole bunch of stuff like quests, unique npc behaviours and generated towns.
The building mechanics are becoming close to complete, so we thought we’d show off some of the basic systems (there will be lots of tools to find!).
Each player is equipped with a gun that can levitate, place and remove blocks and items. It’s capable of placing single blocks or blocks in groups of 4. So you can very quickly fill the space you need to fill whilst having the option to tweak smaller details. Every object that looks as if you can stand on it or place another object on top of it functions as you’d expect. Removing blocks with the block tool is quite slow (it’s not intended to replace mining tools), but it has the benefit of long range.
Any block can be placed in the foreground or the background, left click places/removes blocks from the foreground whilst right click places/removes blocks from the background. Allowing you to quickly alternate between the two.
We’ve tried to create a very visual means of building so the experience plays out beautifully in multiplayer, where you can see exactly what your friends are doing and build in a cooperative way.
There’s also some very basic usage of the wiring system in the video, watch out for that. Needless to say the wiring system is capable of much, much more.
