Stardock CEO: We Probably Won’t Be Supporting Switch

This.

Lol random $1000 comment

People hate Brad Wardell because the internet tells them they should, but anyone who has ever heard or read non-GG interviews with Brad is likely to know he's smart, insightful, and seems to want the industry to be a fair and harassment free environment for everyone. People love a witch hunt though, especially within "gaming culture".

The only successful console RTS I can think of is Halo Wars. I know Supreme Commander got a console port, but not sure how well it did.

As for 4x games, Civilization Revolution is the only one I can think of.
I think with a touch screen the barrier of navigation might come down for 4x games. Of course the UI would have to be tailored for console, but I think an intuitive solution could be found. I can imagine a Paradox game being fine on Switch, for example.

As far as Stardock, I have GC3 but have yet to play it. So I'm not totally sure.

Of the interactions of his I've seen on private social media, he seems like nothing more than a presumptuous man-child. And this was before I even knew about his GG bullshit.

Was the interviewer asking them about it or something? Seems weird to hear this from a PC only dev for no reason.

But as it stands now, there is plenty to play with on the Switch,

Er...

I'm sure he probably meant "There will be".

Never heard of them or their games.

- after a quick Google search - they seem to make games in the genre I dislike the most : RTS games, so definitely won't miss them.

edit : and WTF at the 1000$ bit. Pretty weird and elitist comment to make.

I can't attest to that; I don't really pay attention to his private social media. I've only experienced magazine interviews and podcasts. Oh well.

Seriously...Im shocked. Stardock makes PC strategy games those translate so well to consoles.

Most console gamers won't even know who Stardock is. Gaming Bolt searching for news.

*call random PC only developer*

"Will you support the Switch?"

"...no?"

NEWS!

Maybe you should do some digging of his public social media then, before adamantly claiming that he's the victim of a witch hunt.

I know him from the Quarter to Three forums, dude is an asshat.

I don't know if I fully agree with them. RTS games I understand, but I feel like 4X games could work well on the Switch. The whole "one more turn" addiction seems like the perfect fit for the console, since you can just pick it up and play anywhere.

nobody even plays 4X games on phones, and that's an audience of 2 billion

if i made one for the switch, i'd be lucky to sell 15 copies

Gaming Bolt

The worst fucking site in existence. Either shit two paragraph blogs wrote just for n4g. Or stupid fucking dev questionnaires, again wrote for n4g, ands it legion of fanboys.

This gen is was all about questioning devs on the pros and cons of esram. I imagine that they are now rubbing their hands at the prospect of years of Scorpio vs pro dev questions.

How is this parasite site not banned on here?

Stanned hard for a gamergate figure, then claimed not to care when confronted. I've seen this show before.

Right man, you got me. I'm a secret racist sexist bigot nazi. The internet will praise you for the heroic unmasking of yet another message board deplorable which you've accomplished today. Kudos.

All I'm saying is, my exposure to Wardell is limited to his professional output and interviews in older magazines and podcasts like GFW. To me he seemed intelligent and I thought his perspective on the gaming industry was pretty level-headed. I don't read his facebook or his twitter or his quarter-to-three posts, so I can't comment on that.

If someone knows him way more intimately than I do and disagrees with my take, that's totally fine, but I can't comment on it, because I simply don't know the details they are referring to. Is it better for me to take a hard stance either way? I'm not going to go back and read his social media history, so I'd rather just say I can't attest to it. Simple as that.

Yes, how dare people judge someone based on their loud, vocal (and incredibly suspect) statements on issues they care about. The nerve. Instead of judging people's words and actions, we should measure vague feelings about how they might be as people, and definitely avoid looking at any reported details of the case at hand because facts might color those assumptions.

Because I mean I had the same opinion of him before I saw the other stuff that's been reported in this thread, which led to me feeling like I'd contributed my money to the wrong place. Plus never forget Elemental.

What on Earth does this mean

That it's cheap enough that it's worth it just for just Nintendo games even if third party support doesn't come. I agree personally and bought it knowing I'll just play Nintendo games and indies mostly. I have a PC and PS4 Pro for third party stuff.

If there's a whole side to Wardell that I missed, then I'm fine with admitting my previous statement of a witch hunt might be wrong. But it would be nice to know why I'm wrong instead of people just telling me I'm wrong. All I know is that he was accused and cleared of a harassment charge and that he was targeted by what seemed to me like a smear campaign. Again, I don't have him on social media and I've never met him, so there's only so much I can comment on. All I know is that I see it a lot in gaming culture, where people tend to get dog-piled on. From my perspective that seemed to be what was going on.

Nah, in Wardell's case it's pretty warranted. I don't know anything about his private social media and his behavior around GG was pretty disgusting. It's not really a witch hunt if they're holding a sign that says "look at me, I'm a witch".

Agreed with the gist of his statement. Nintendo does not need third parties to succeed but does need them to generate greater revenue and guarantee a robust and healthy library.

And that's why he once tried to direct GG to go after a forum he didn't like. I post there as well as here, and they had to go full lockdown for a couple of weeks turning off anon read access and new registrations. So his hate is earned IMO.

So a dev that never supports Nintendo hardwarw still isn't supporting Nintendo hardware. How the heck is this threadworthy?

What on Earth does this mean

It means if it was $1000 Nintendo would have a problem without any 3rd parties. He's saying it's a relatively accessible price point where it's cool if there's only 3-5 big games a year, which is true I think for Nintendo platforms. Especially if it comes down to $199. They are a PC dev and PC is only 3rd party.

CEO of Stardock and writer of a novel (Elemental: Destiny's Embers) based on one of his games. Fellow GAFfer Matthew Gallant described the novel like so:
It is also relevant if you are thinking about buying the novel (see postscript) he wrote to go along with the game. Part of it is, no shit, about heroes who want to build a border fence to keep their lands free of olive-skinned "Kraxen" and even darker-skinned "Fallen", and the cowardly nobles who insist that diplomacy is the solution. Only in this situation the border between the two lands is not the Rio Grande but a single bridge made out of magic wood, which the heroes vow to destroy if they cannot get the fence built, even though there are things called boats.

It is 544 pages long, heavy on sentence fragments and bad punctuation, and distinguished mainly by a steady stream of characters noticing that the lone female character is wearing a dress. I am not kidding.

P.S. Don't think about buying the novel.

Ah, sad to hear that. I really only read GAF as far as video games boards so I guess I missed that drama.

I think their games could be kind of cool on the Switch, but despite theoretically really being into Sins of a Solar Empire, it never really clicked for me.

In the broader scheme of things should we care if Stardock are not on Switch? I've honestly never even heard of them before. I'm guessing they have never made a hit console game before.

The Switch is getting major support from indies like Mojang and Yatch Club Games etc. That's a good thing.

"Stardock is developing for Switch"

"Great! Third party support is a good thing!"

-

"Stardock is not developing for Switch"

"Who?"

Then how come you were pretending to know more about him than those who take issue with him?

My response was to a post that seemed to fairly sincerely admit they don't know much about Wardell other than he "seems to have sympathy to gamergate". So in that light, I did feel like I knew more about him than that specific poster. I don't really see how this is relevant though unless your goal is to out me as a shitty GAF poster, which I'll fully admit to being.

I honestly feel like this guy is just trying to make comments to get him clicks to promote his own company.

This, what he said about Scorpio. He's just playing us.

It's not a statement made out of the blue, it's an answer to a question.

What? Like, the dude didn't say that randomly, he replied to a question that was asked to him. What do you expect, for him to stay silent and not answer it or something?

Get the hell out of here with that sound logic, by actually reading the OP, by having good reading comprehension, and by not having some drive by "LOL" or "OK" type of shit response.

Ain't nobody got time for you, bro.
