Starfox Zero announced. Holiday 2015 [Campaign by Platinum Games]

After watching the treehouse stream which really showed things off more clearly, I think this is a case of Same Artstyle, Same Game strikes again. They are clearly going for the Starfox 64 style. This reminds me of Halo 3. For months after gameplay was shown, there were piles of people saying Bungie was cheap and lazy and upscalled Halo 2, swearing it looked exactly the same. It didn't, not even close. But the art direction was completely unchanged from Halo 2.

Even considering the load of running a cockpit view on the gamepad, it does not look like a Wii game. But due to the art style, even without the gamepad view I'm not sure how dramatically more impressive it would look to the initial impressions it is being judged by.

This is an excellent point and most likely the correct answer. I am fine with how it looks, though.

Not to mention it renders two full-screen views of the same world (so an even bigger split-screen), and I assume it's 60fps too, on both screens? No one could expect a WiiU to do any better.

I think it's fairly obvious why the graphics are underwhelming: The TV and gamepad are rendering two different views of the same 3D world. This is akin to the console running a split-screen mode at all times. No wonder it looks subpar compared to games that simply duplicate the main view or display a simple 2D UI on the gamepad.

This is more than likely true, and another reason I can't wait for the gamepad to die a death. It's the least fun I've had with a Nintendo controller.

heh

Haha.

Game looked so boring. You can't just shit out another 2 hour long straight-forward Star Fox in 2015 and expect $60. There is no hook. Sorry, guys.

Early impressions from Gamespot are....tepid.

Maybe the experience just isn't well suited to the E3 showfloor, as Nintendo has proven with Splatoon that they do a good job with Gamepad-motion controls.

That's possibly the case. However, it didn't seem like much of an issue for the Treehouse guys playing it (though they likely have some previous experience with it). Best to wait for more feedback from others who play it before using this as a measuring stick for how it plays.

Yo, it was Platinum? I totally missed that part!

Daaamn, Platinum is getting work from all sides.

Good on them, the game looks pretty fun.

To be honest, I was really looking forward to Star Fox, but this is a bit underwhelming.
Was playing one of the Star Fox stages on Smash 4 the other day (Orbital Gate in Omega mode) and was thinking how even more awesome the new Star Fox would look :(

It might get the 3d World treatment though.

I trust them with gameplsy, but yeah, looked bland to me. Those rings floating around e.g. looked like they're supposed to be round, but didn't have enough polygons.

Dog fighting looks good with the new targeting.

Too much of the same dialogue lines from 64.

EDIT:
Oh 60fps on two screens? Why did the reveal trailer look so choppy then?
I guess the graphics are a little excused...a little.

On the bright side, we probably wont have a massive downgrade thread for this. Someone should make the first "upgraded from pre-release footage" thread lol

Looked like garbage in the Nintendo stream. The visuals and gameplay looked very primitive, almost N64 like in a way. I don't really know what else to say, it looks like shit and I am shocked it was shown in that state!

It's never more obvious than e3 that many gaffers do not play games but rather just look at them. This game looks rough at times...yes. The Wii U is capable of more..but what about the gameplay? We got transforming Airwings and yet...nope graphics.'

In every other reveal thread, there is always these bunch of jokers who go "lol looks like a ps1 game herr derr" and it is growing to be really fucking annoying.

Graphics arent everything plus none of these games are done so damn near all of them will get last minute upgrades.

E3 used to be so exciting but jesus chirst the negativity and focus on graphics makes it super hard to even talk about games around here.

No one has any passion for games it seems and would rather talk about what is bad instead of the cool stuff.

I hope we get to see a few more boss battles. That's the thing I'm looking forward to most with the Platinum colab.

And I do hope there's a four player component.

Yeah, the Treehouse folks didn't seem to struggle with the control scheme. Later today the devs are supposed to be on the stream to demo the game, I'm anxious to see what they can do.

Yeah I'm the last person to be all "get gud lol!!!" but it seemed so effortless for everyone on the Treehouse stream. Clearly control complaints are user-related.

From my sunken thread

Kotaku explains how Nintendo EAD and Platinum are co-developing Star Fox U

Interesting bit since most people are not aware that Nintendo's EAD group doesn't co-develop games typically. But this generation Miyamoto has introduced the idea of outsourcing an internally developed prototype (Steel Diver) or completed source (Wii Sports / Star Fox) to externally produce games with outside developers.

EAD x Platinum collaboration

"Art is being done at Platinum’s Osaka office, but design is being done in Nintendo’s offices in Kyoto, where some of the Platinum guys have taken temporary root. Nintendo’s director on the project is Yugo Hayashi who previously did level design on The Legend of Zelda Twilight Princess and then directed Wii Fit U. As for how in the world one goes from Zelda to Wii Fit to Star Fox, Hayashi said, “I was kind of surprised by it, too.” Miyamoto joked: “Probably the main reason is actually that he sits the closest to me [of anyone in the development group].”

On Project Giant Robot / Project Guard

"Nintendo EAD and Hayashi is overseeing it, also with the help of Platinum. Miyamoto said it is meant to be played online and that Nintendo is still figuring out if or how to release it in conjunction with Star Fox Zero. Development of Giant Robo, another, less impressive E3 2014 experimental game is on hold."

I guess it was intentional. The rings in Assault were perfect.

anyone who say ANY game looks like n64 game shoud be shot.

This isnt a looker for sure...but fuck off with that shit

Am I the only one thinking this game was 19.99-24.99 arcade titles like Kora?

When we first saw a glimpse last year, I thought o myself low budget title.

But it looks like this game is being made very quickly since platinum has a lot going on for projects.

It looks and plays like starfox, but nothing more, which is a downer to me.

Especially after Starfox Assualt.

Well duh, what is it supposed to play like?

Let those graphics junkies enjoy their 30 fps console games. lol

Gameplay looked solid, but graphically it looks pretty bad.

The main problem, IMO, is the very bland artstyle. Still, I have hope that the game can change a lot graphically in the next few months.

Yeah, this, exactly. StarFox 0 has to render two views at once, both at 60 FPS.

If we're really going to compare it to the Star Wars games on GameCube, the two-player co-op Rogue Leader campaign included in Rebel Strike had to run at 30 FPS.

Also, regarding StarFox 0's graphics: They have five or six months to work on it still. Improvements could come together quickly in that time.

I think that says a lot more about you than the game. Have you actually played a 3DS?

Aesthetically the game is very much inline with Starfox 64 3D. Obviously it's much higher rez and cleaner looking, but overall it looks like a HD Starfox 64 3D.

Well duh, what is it supposed to play like?

Maybe a more modern Starfox?

instead of something from N64 era. Even the way the target system works, looks like it was ripped straight from N64 controls.

Would be nice to actually have some life on these planets that interact with you. Would be nice to get out of your ship and use your blasters.

I mean if you still love the classic starfox gameplay there's nothing wrong with that. It still holds up for the most part outside of forcing you to use the gamepad.

But From different iterations in the past I though it would be nice to see a blend of some of those things.
