Starfox Zero announced. Holiday 2015 [Campaign by Platinum Games]

Visually I'm pretty underwhelmed with this. I was really hoping they were gonna go with the cheesy puppet look; Miyamoto even MENTIONED Thunderbirds in his dev diary. It would have been perfect to try and replicate that look.

What we have now looks pretty... not interesting? Corneria looks exactly how I imagine Corneria from Starfox 64 looking. And we kind of already saw that with Starfox 64 3D. And now we see it again.

Having said that, I can really see what Miyamoto is going for with the "cockpit" view on the gamepad. I love the idea of having that view into the world from a moving gyro pad. I love the motion controls in Splatoon so if they're similar to that, I am excited.

...and seriously, where the fuck was the Starfox theme in all this?!

It seems a bit early. Some of the UI elements will certainly be polished and I didn't hear music on some stages. It's definitely Star fox though and Platinum Games is very capable when it comes to action games.

Doesnt sound like any original voice actors are back for the main team. Think they said some sf64 actors were comin back? Must be for some of the other characters.
Mike West was back for SF643D and Smash 4, and Fox's voice in this game sounds like him too.

This sounds like the SF643D cast to me. Fine by me.

This reminds me of why I disliked the enemies in Starfox Assault because they clearly look like the most basic polygons sticking together. The Landmaster and Arwing look great, but the enemies all look like triangles with sticks between each piece.

I can only hope the models outside of the Starfox team get visual upgrades before release to look more like mechs and not evil carrots or diabolical cubes.

I've always perceived the non-boss baddies in Star Fox to look this way. Well, at least in SF1, SF64 and Assault. (Adventures is an exception, obviously, and I didn't play Command.) They're what I expect from Star Fox in terms of enemy design, so I don't mind.

Stafox 64 is nearly 20 years old. Even if the voice actors were in their 20's during the original recording there is going to be some kind of change to their voices. Not to mention the difficulty in nailing a vocal performance they did so long ago.
Ha, what? I'm pretty sure that professional voice actors can can do the same voices for as long as they want as long as they're not, like, lifelong smokers. It's not an uncommon thing in TV, movies, etc. at all.

I really hope this has a good amount of content behind it. It looks pretty good and bringing back Star Fox 2 ideas is a very smart way to go to add variety to the gameplay. I'm concerned about the shooting, though.

Don't forget that the quality of the voice recordings back then was much lower, so that could contribute to the different sounding voices.

That's the visual style of Star Fox. It's been that way since the SNES game.

Game's looking pretty fun. Apparently it's not a sequel, but maybe more of a remake? Still cool to see characters like General Pepper and Pigma considering all the shit that went down in Assault.

Oh yeah, apparently Zoness is gonna be in this game too.

Do you HAVE to aim with the damn gamepad? I don't want to be moving my arms around like an idiot.
Sigh...
Nintendo ruins another franchise with their shitty Motion control gimmicks.
64 3D's problem is that gyro controlled motion, and motion also controlled aiming. This compounded with the fact that it undermined the 3D display, shows it was a poor solution.

However, they seemed to completely re-evaluate gyro as of splatoon, tying it solely to minute aiming, but with large movements in aiming still tied to the ship's motion.

I have faith in the gyro controls, but I hope there are other options.

I think I'd have to actually play it for me to fairly judge this game. I want to like it, but the SF series has been disappointing me for over a decade.

Well yeah, age is less of a factor than just not being able to nail the voice, but it's still a factor as actors age. Portrayals also change over time due to maturation of character or the voice actor just wanting to try something a bit different.

Family Guy - Peter Griffin first season sounds different than Peter Griffin current season. Same for Brian. To a lesser extent so does Alex Borstein's Lois.

Mike Judge's Beavis sounded different in the Beavis and Butthead reboot after he was away from the character for a while. It definitely happens.

Watching the IGN stream http://www.ign.com/events/e3

So the giant battleship Androssa can be taken out two different ways. On Nintendo stream they took it out by taking out the lasers which made the ship crumble. The other way is to take one laser out so you can go inside and take out the core in walker mode in your Arwing.

This is so very, very Star Fox 2.

EDIT: Aw man, it's over now and that was so fun and funny to watch.

Splatoon play so much better with gyro its not even funny. I Have faith in Starfox control. But please Nintendo, GIVE OPTIONS TO THE PLAYERS. I don't need it since i love the gamepad And i'm sure starfox will play better with gyro, but for other people sake who can't get used to it, give them the choice. gamepad without gyro and pro controller option. DO IT.

I'm not a fan of the flying and aiming being separated. That rather significantly changes the feeling of Star Fox.

These are basically how I feel. There's a big risk of alienating the fans of this franchise without the option to do it the old fashioned way.

I was under the impression that primary aiming still followed the nose of the ship when pointing with the left stick. But tilting the gamepad when not moving the stick allows aiming independent of the direction the ship is pointing.

Unless I misunderstand how it was played on the stream.

That's definitely how it looks in the trailer.

Can anyone clarify for me how the controls/gamepad works?

I get the impression that the L stick controls the ship movement. Does the R stick control aiming? The gyro only affects the camera within the cockpit? As in, the you can use the gyro to look on the right or left side of the cockpit, but the precision is still done via the R stick? (this is how it works in Star Citizen if you use a head-tracking device, but with mouse instead of R stick) If so, I'd be a lot less concerned about the controls - I just don't want to have to actually *aim* via gyro.

Played it in e3, I personally really like it. Gameplay wise it is a return to form even if the graphics I wish were better. At first the game control is disorienting but it should be fine once you get used to it.

I can't get over how good Titania looks. Still not feeling the complaints at all.

Ever since since star fox 64 3D I felt like Nintendo encouraged bad voice acting. I'm not joking either. Maybe it's just nostalgia but Star Fox 64 had cheesy lines but a lot of the deliveries seem genuine to me. With 64 3D and from what I hear so far from this it sounds like the actors were directed to make the lines sound silly. Is it just me or has it always been like that? I know the actors haven't gotten worse, I think the intent is to make it more light hearted like a really old style dub of an anime.

To bolded, you mean just for Star Fox? If so, I agree with nearly everything you said. They've taken a deliberately campy direction since then and it was awkward in the remake and was especially bad in Smash 4.

Although, from what I could hear it sounds better here. Maybe NOA heeded how terrible the Smash 4 voices were.

Looks kinda boring honestly. This coming from a guy who still loves to play his SNES Starfox cartridge.

Also, does anyone really want a transforming arwing? That just seems... I dunno, dumb.

If this game wasn't named Star Fox, and you watched that gameplay video, would you be excited by it?

I loved Star Fox and Star Fox 64, but this game is not very compelling looking so far - and I don't just mean the poor visuals.

It's actually more sad to see people under the impression those are the visuals that necessitate 60fps on the Wii U.

They've already insinuated that hitting 60fps on both the TV and gamepad was very challenging. Have you seen the frame rate hits that Mario Kart 8 and Hyrule Warriors take in TV/gamepad split-screen mode?

I would've said it looks a lot like Star Fox 64 and why is Nintendo bothering doing that if it isn't a Star Fox game.

I'm not hating on the game as much as some others, but it's kind of disappointing to have the performance so directly effected by a gimmick that is really kind of uninteresting (to me, at least). By all means, give me gyro controls with the gamepad, but I really couldn't care less about looking back and forth between two screens.

If they take this game to its potential in terms of difficulty and enemy count, it will be basically unplayable with the Pro Controller. You can't take a game meant to be played with free aim (3 axis control using 2 joysticks for the ship, plus gyro for aiming) and play it with a locked-forward aiming and expect nearly the same results from players. I guess they could allow it in the two player mode - two players each using a pro controller, one player controls the ship and one player aims.

Nintendo really missed the boat on not including 6-axis or 9-axis motion controls in the Pro Controller like the DS 3 and DS 4 have.

Cautiously optimistic about the dual perspective between gamepad and TV, it's definitely not ideal for some people depending on their vision (if you wear bifocals or something like that) but shouldn't be an issue for me. In SF64 I found the first-person mode cool but it was way too hard to play like that due to the loss of peripheral vision, the Treehouse stream made it look like it would be possible to look quickly between the TV and gamepad to get a different perspective on the current action, especially in the All-Range Mode fights.

Yeah, Mario Kart doesn't even support playing on the gamepad instead of splitting the main screen. Sonic Racing did but it tanked the framerate hard.

Personally I'm satisfied with these graphics, they're still a big improvement over the GameCube titles. It looks like there is some level of AA going on in the video I watched on YouTube, the jaggies were there but a bit smoothed out (FXAA or something?).

I would because it's an on-rails sci-fi shooter with free-roam bosses and dog fights in air and space, and I love the hell out of that stuff.

I'm not sure where all the hate for the graphics is coming from. To me, I think Nintendo is going for a very Starfox 64 3D kind of look and I think it has been pulled off very well. When I was reading the initial comments at work I was expecting something awful looking. Really stoked for this, especially with Platinum Games involved. I hope we get some insane action

The trailer got me kinda excited, with the "meh" visuals. However, watching all the Treehouse footage got me pretty hyped. It looks much better in the 1080p60fps playback than I originally thought, and it looks like it plays really nicely.

Hmm... I can already feel the disappointment rushing in me even with the PG treatment.

It's Star Fox 64... again.

I thought Assault enemies looked more complex.

Something worth keeping in mind as well is that (my remark up above about Kid Icarus notwithstanding) Star Fox has remained synonymous with its style of play, in spite of surviving on so few entries, because there is nothing else that plays like it. It's like how nothing in the Metroidvania subgenre, not even an excellent game like Guacamelee, quite fills the Metroid void; they come close but don't completely capture the flavour. Star Fox Zero looks to be the first successor to Star Fox 64 since Star Fox 64.

The more footage I saw in the Treehouse streams, the more confident I was in the game. In terms of interaction, it appeals to me more than what I've seen of Star Wars Battlefront, and that's a game that looks visually stupendous under a thematic layer that frankly means more to me than Star Fox. I'm more concerned with the quantity of content, as both of the classic Star Fox games (the original and 64) feel incredibly short by modern standards, even with multiple paths, unless you are specifically playing for high scores.
