Stargate: Universe Season One Discussion Thread

Hopefully next week they kill off those stupid communication stones, its going to hold this show back if they don't. Lou Diamond Phillips and his whole story is terrible.

I feel like that bald marine is going to attempt to pull a Gaeta/Zarek or at the very least a fatal fight with Captain flamethrower.

They won't get control. The whole point of the series is that they're stuck on the ship, having to go wherever it feels like taking them. It's just going to be a long series of artificial crises and them trying to guess what the ship wants/needs at each stop.

At least until LDP decides they should nuke the bridge or something.
So they'll keep jumping from system to system; hoping that each jump will be the jump home.

Good episode. Shame that alien turned out to just be a freeloading menace.

Well, the show passed its first alien encounter test. Not too bad. A little stereotypical but not in the Stargate tradition of english speaking humans popping up on every single planet, so... no bitching it's a big improvement.

I have to agree I'm glad they're trying something different with this show. I adore both SG-1 and Atlantis but let's be honest they are pretty much the same show with very similar characters.

Putting all these people in this incredibly shitty situation makes for a really intriguing dynamic I feel. Realistically this is what the first Season of Atlantis should've been like, although their situation wasn't quite as dire.

Having a leader like Young who basically doesn't want to deal with things properly is a nice change too. The other shows always had strong leaders (or at least leaders who strongly believed in things).

Didn't really like this episode too much. Both plots were a bit boring. That said the Hoth set was nice.

Looks like they are gonna address the question, why they don't just send some super smart people to the ship with the stones, in the next episode.

I like that math boy is not only used to inform Stargate newbies of the background (e.g. how long you can have a Stargate open) but also represents the thoughts of the TV audience (e.g. the comment about the aliens probably stealing the water)

also: LT Epicboobs deals well with the love-triangle situation?

This series needs some kind of external threat if it's going to keep going for long. They can't go on with the "we're running out of X but will be miraculously saved with the survival of all main characters" for long.

And of course the red shirt was going to die. Of course neither of the Lieutenants are going to die. It's just too predictable, and I don't think a show about people arguing about how to solve a problem that they inevitably will is going to be viable for long.

Well there was that alien ship that was latched onto the Destiny that'll likely lead to said external threat.

Can someone answer me this? Why when they arrived at the gate for the last time and had the barrel full of bugs thrown at them did the gate have to be closed before they could go through? I'm not the biggest stargate fan so I don't know why this was :lol

Only outgoing matter can pass through the event horizon of a wormhole - so to get back to the ship they had to close the wormhole and dial back to the ship

So its a one way deal kinda thing? They have to dial from their side to get back to the ship?

I think SG-1 established it like this:
Wormholes are one way only, though it is unknown what happens if someone goes through an incoming wormhole (It is equally unknown what would happen if someone entered the Stargate via the 'back' rather than the 'front'; in the novel "Stargate SG-1: Survival of the Fittest", Teal'c stated that he knew someone who attempted that on one occasion, and that his death was "most unpleasant", but further details are unknown)

Then again, SG-1 wasn't the most constant with it's canon and continuity (O'Neill both doesn't watch sci-fi and quotes both Star Trek and Star Wars [wanted phasers on their starfighter :lol ])

Also they need to stop dicking around with the love triangle.

The senator daughter is the worst, most annoyingly useless character by a country mile. I really hope they actually do something with her development. There's already enough eye candy.

So Lt James took the whole Scott and Chloe thing pretty well.

"Couldn't find a broom closet?" :lol

I'm going to guess that she will fall pregnant. Then there would be this whole issue of whether they should perform an abortion or let a child come into the sort of hellish environment that they're experiencing.

This is Stargate... there's no way that would happen.
But yeah, there can't be that many 100,000 year old condoms lying around. :lol

Last two eps have soured me on the show. I certainly wanted something different than just another SG1 Atlantis clone (shows that I loved) but this direction is boring to me. Think Im going to hop back to Fringe (sigh) for this season and pick up on SG:U when its on BR instead.

Rush continues to be the star of the show. I'm glad that he's such a standout early on, because he's keeping things interesting for me while the other characters have some time develop.

I concur. I've seen a lot of dislike for Rush, but having seen quite a few of his previous roles it doesn't bother me as much, it's just the type of role he seems to fit.

Eli is better when he's not whining, but he makes some good points. I kind of see him as the "things the audience is thinking" sort of character.

I'm still liking it so far, glad we're moving out of this resources arc, but I came into this with an open mind and it's been enjoyable.

Spoilers for next week:
Seems like Talford is making yet another appearance. Here's hoping Greer loses it on him.

Just saw the first few episodes on Hulu, so I'll toss my thoughts out:

Overall, the show is a lot better than I thought it would be. I was expecting a disaster, but this show is actually decent. The show would be a lot better if it got a handle on creating more organic drama, rather than just fabricating it in a rather unnatural and jarring manner.

Episode 6 seemed a bit weak to me. I know Eli is supposed to be the voice of the audience, but I feel that making him out
to be hostile towards aliens, and not inquisitive
might be jarring with his geek personality. On the other hand, I can see a geek-type looking at this situation from an Occam's Razor view.

I also disagree with thoughts that the character is drawn too broadly. I enjoyed how in the first few episodes, they did a nice job of
conveying his attraction to Chloe through his actions, rather than just putting it out there through language.
and showing him as
someone who didn't have much going on his life, being that he was a college dropout who couldn't a job, hence, while others might dread their experience on this ship, to him, it's an enjoyable experience.

So far,I feel that him and Grier are the only two characters whom the writers know how to write.

Yeah. Commander Flamethrower for example.

"Don't you trust me?" (Seemed like a stupid question given that he'd just been standing there refusing to follow orders for the whole sequence.)

"No."

Then he runs off all sad.

Its true that there is almost no action in SGU, but i really enjoy their space exploration and survival strugle.

Also Col.Young is badass.

I'm a big fan of the previous Star Gate shows, but I'm not sure how many boring episodes I can take before I give up on it.
It seems like they have been stretching 20 minute concepts into 40.

Ok I gave it a fair shot but I'm done. This show is just horrible. Its been the same lame plot every single week so far. Not to mention these characters are all annoying as shit.

Still a little slow in places, they seem to linger on scenes a little too long sometimes. But im still really enjoying it.

I got the feeling he backed off because he respected her for telling the truth.

Im liking this a lot, never watched any of the other seasons/series though besides a few eps, but anyways good shit.

Same here, I don't think I can even admit to seeing even a full episode of the series. Any of them, except Universe which, quite frankly, sounded interesting when I saw a few teasers for it a while back.

So I obviously can't compare it to Atlantis, etc, but it isn't that bad.

He looked mad. Then his comments to Mr. Emo I. Suicide at the end of the episode made it seem like he was trying to work his way into Emo's favor so he wouldn't have to put up with that lady's weak-willed decisions again.

Emo I. Suicide?

how long have they been on the ship? Just seems a bit odd that people are complaining about military rules etc when surely they'd still be focused on surviving, and civilians on a fucking giant spaceship millions of light years from earth would be worrying more about simple, mortal things than moaning about libertarian shit.

Also, that guy from Young Guns is fucking annoying. wouldn't they have set up even basic chain of command stuff that would prevent him from randomly overrulling the commander and making shit up?

Eli and Rush are the only reasons to watch so far, everything else is too annoying. Will stick with it though for now.

Which episode is Epic boob lady in?

She shown in every ep, but her sex scene was in the pilot and her t-shirt scenes were in the 2nd and 3rd ep, with the longest one in the 3rd ep, IIRC. After that she has always been wearing her AF blouse. The T&A requirement is being met by Chloe now.

Yeah, the forced unrealistic drama is jarring, and a MAJOR MAJOR flaw in the show.

I thought that episode was pretty decent. Of course, R.D.A. doesn't hurt things.

The "glitch" with the stones made for some pretty awkward moments :lol.

Rush and Eli still making the show.

Great episode and that ending really shocked me.

Honestly, if they just took Eli, Chloe, Rush and got rid of everyone else I would be just as happy with the show. Well, maybe keep Young around as well.

I don't mind Young or Greer honestly. Although I would have liked Greer a lot more if he had clocked Talford again :lol.

This one was pretty rad.
