Starhawk (Closed) Beta Testing thread of impressions and questions.

I'm getting a bit more into this, but there seems to be some fundamental things which just make it not very exciting.

  1. Is it me or is the audio pretty bad? It doesn't sound like a warzone or anything
  2. The normal shooting sucks. Your weapon is inaccurate and it seems to take whole clips to actually do some damage.
  3. As a result of above, most ground encounters result in melee kills.
  4. Melee is pretty boring. It doesn't have the meat of say, a Halo melee. It just feels automatic and detached.
  5. Why is there even a run button? There is no reason to walk for 99% of your time on the ground.
  6. Strictly for the beta (hopefully) but the lack of any real training or introduction is a pain
  7. The repair tool is neat, but it's placement is really odd. Same for many things actually
  8. Rift energy is easy to get. Almost too easy. After the first 2 minutes of gameplay, there is always enough to have built what you want. After that, there's little need for it outside of spawning vehicles
  9. If this is a small map, then they better do a job of making the big maps more populated. At the moment most of the time, the game map is empty bar the two bases (if CTF) or a central point (if TDM).
  10. Would love a sticky grenade ala Halo
  11. Laser defences (including the one in the bunkers) are idiotic. They should stop bullets, but from BOTH sides, not just one.
  12. Things are pretty hard to differentiate from afar

Hi there, just some bits that I know of:

2. I find it most effective tapping, as it's the recoil and spray that makes it less effective

4. I have read in an interview that the melee is going to be assassination/animation type kills in the final game as apose to just a swipe

5. helps get out of a sticky situation? or running from car to weapon bunker etc?

6. agreed, it took me a while to realise everything!

2. I've tried tapping, but it doesn't seem to alter the recoil. It still sprays wildly and there's no feedback.

5. I mean, there's no point in a run button, because you are pretty much always running. Not that there is no need to run.

I too wish the shooting was refined. There is too much bullet spray and early. This is compounded by the fact that it feels like enemies take too many bullets at times or are hard to hit (hit detection).

I find burst firing is by far the best, but there's still no feedback on whether you are damaging them.

Also, the razorbacks are too dominant against ground troops

Anyone else having trouble joining games? I stopped playing last night when i had a crash, now it won't connect to any games.
Always. It seems to go through phases. Though I haven't crashed in a while.

Check out the beta forums.

Audio is not final.

Warhawk had pretty amazing audio, and allegedly Starhawk will too. For sure things like a robot landing behind you and walking up doesn't have the impact it should in the beta.

You need to feather the machine gun more. It's odd, but short 3-5 bullet bursts is the best way to take somebody out with it.

It does get STUPIDLY inaccurate over time though. Read: Stand next to a cluster of RE barrels unloading a clip and most of the bullets are missing. Sorry Lightbox, but at point blank range the bullets are going to hit home you ninnies!

If I downloaded the beta during the closed beta period, can I redownload the same file from PSN Store and play with you guys?

yes indeed

On an unrelated note, I'm still unconvinced on this game as a whole...way to many nagging issues to mention here. I feel pretty bad for Lightbox and for this franchise...

I spend more time being alone shooting for barrels and making structures than killing. There are no points for creating structures.

If they want teamwork, they need to give points for constructing a building, points for assists if someone else drives vehicle/hawk from
building you made, bigger spawn radius for spawn beacons, upgradable buildings, and more surrounding buildings to construct .

Agreed, people are always going to play for themselves, and thus go for kills. They need to make the support mechanics significantly more beneficial to your personal score and personal experience points towards ranking up

About to start up my first game =p if anyone wants to watch me suffer/play with me for an hour or so, add Kinitari

edit: maybe if I can actually get into a game :(

I can only see the UI elements when I join a game, every thing else is just black. I can move around and hear when I fire my gun, but no graphics.

Starhawk Public BETA Update 1.2.6
Monday, January 30, 2012 At 6:53PM

Today's 1.2.6 update for the Starhawk Public BETA was deployed during the regularly scheduled server maintenance today, January 31 at 2pm Central time and included the following changes:

Slightly increased JetPack fuel capacity.
Greatly reduced JetPack recharge delay.
Removed Hawk MG targeting assist vs. turrets.
Reduced range for melee attack.
Adjusted client/server settings to reduce connection errors.
Added pre-built Bunker, Garage and Launch-Pad in starting bases.

JetPack Adjustments:
The 1.2.3 Update we released included a number of changes to the Vulture JetPack that was intended to 'nerf' it against ground troops. While these changes were largely a stop-gap measure until we can roll-up some updated aiming/targeting changes in a future update, we have been following the data and player community and we felt we went a bit too far. So today's 1.2.6 Update includes an increased max fuel capacity. Previously it was 5 seconds of sustained thrust and now it's 6 seconds. We also greatly reduced the fuel recharge time. Previously it was 6 seconds and now it is 3 seconds.

We're hopeful these changes will help to further bring the Vulture JetPack unit into balance with the rest of the game but rest assure we will continue to make changes if we need to!

Hawk MG Targeting:
In the recent update we enabled targeting assist on the Hawk MG vs. ground turrets and air-mines however that change made strafing ground troops and precise ground targeting more difficult. Today's 1.2.6 Update removes the Hawk MG assist vs ground turrets but *KEEPS* the assist on Air-Mines.

Shorter Melee Range:
The melee attack we currently have in the Starhawk BETA is something that we're not happy with and we have a new melee that we are going to be releasing for the BETA in a future update. Until we do so, we felt that we still needed to make a change in the short-term to stem the currently very, very OP (over-powered) melee implementation. Today's update greatly reduces the "snap" range on the melee attack. This is the distance at which a player can press R3 and dash towards the target player to strike a killing blow. Previously it was 12' and now it is 6'.

This change should make a significant impact on the kill-graphs that our team here at LightBox Interactive review on a daily basis. As a fun bit of trivia, our Starhawk BETA players scored over 115K melee kills last weekend -- that number is just out of whack when compared to the other weapons. We'll continue to make short-term changes to help balance the current implementation until we release the re-vamped melee attack

Adjusted Client/Server Settings:
We've been in contact with some of our players that were experiencing a number of "[*] Connection Error" pop-ups when they were playing Starhawk. We've made a change that should reduce this and we're interested in hearing from our BETA players if the game connection is more stable.

Pre-Built Structures:
We have placed small pre-built bases on the planet of Scourge (acid sea) and the Orbital Space Platform. The starting bases for both the Rifter and Outcast include a Supply Bunker, Launch Pad and Garage. This change was made to help jump-start the combat in the early-phase of the game and allows players to get good weapons and vehicles sooner while still providing the players with some interesting tactical decisions: "Should you rush the enemy with the units you have in an initial blitz?" or "Should you save your Rift Energy afford the more expensive/advanced units?"

WELCOME to our new Uncharted 3 players
we hope you enjoy the Starhawk BETA!
.

Too many people build the same structures too close to each other. There needs to be a structure count when you press triangle in the build menu, it should help give an idea of what's been built.

Melee lag is pretty bad. In fact, dying lag is pretty bad. Sick of killing someone, then they still run about a bit, then I get killed, then we both die at the same time.

I am a tower defense guy. I always stay behind to build my masterpiece defense. ^_^

Joining in from the Uncharted crew. Had a blast playing this today, so much so I put off studying for a neuroanatomy midterm :/ Game has a few issues though. Netcode needs improvement, there's some significant lag between player action and reaction at some points, and I know its not my connection. There also needs to be a way to keep track of how many of each structure has been built, where they are, and how many building slots you have left (as it is, you don't know until the game stops you from building anymore). I'm also not a fan of enemies being able to build inside your base. People just rush in and pop 2-3 autoturrets or grab the flag, build a garage, and make off on a truck (though admittedly, this being a problem is more an issue with the team and myself on occasion just being completely unorganized out of sync). In fact, I think it'd make more sense to restrict building to the spawn area around pod towers and in the initial base areas

Played this for about 30 minutes tonight. So far I am enjoying it but there is definitely a lot to learn, even having played plenty of Warhawk. I don't know if I enjoy flying or running more, which is strange because in Warhawk I enjoyed flying to much more that I primarily played dog fight matches.

They can still be destroyed.

CUE WHINING! :D

Melee is major nerfed. Nice. No more free knife kill within X feet. Now you need to aim and kill.
Doesn't matter. The start of the game is where its needed. After that, strategies take over. But people spawning and dropping a vehicle one in front of the other got annoying.

And I don't want to move out into untapped territory to strategically place something unequipped or unarmed.

CUE TITLE LINE AND UNCLEVER RETORT =P

Huge fan of WarHawk but have a tiny nitpick so far,
I really hate the enemy faction aesthetically. really dull compared to Chernovan who were like Russian,Nazi,Samurai

how are they supposed to award points based on who you intended to use it for?

then people would just spam building stuff lol

also, i build with the intention of making it easier to get into someone else's base, im certain there are other players that feel the same way or build with the same intent

YOU RAAAANG?

Think of these emplacements as your lilly livered participation trophies in Starhawk.

The problem with participation trophies is there will always be real winners there to invalidate them. ^_^

I will never stop blowing up the other team's sh*t.

Yeah. Will always agree on this topic.

For a game that is Cowboys and Indians in space, this is super boring to look at. I guess making a space teepee for Outcast bunkers would have been too much. :\

What's up with ladders in this game, every time I try to climb one I get stuck in it.

I've only played one match, but something feels off about the controls and the general feel of everything you do. Why does your player cover like half the screen in OTS view? :P

I went into options and changed it to where I press square to climb ladders instead of automatically climb onto them. Felt better for me that way.

Edit: also around what time do yall usually make the neogaf server?

So I tried to play this last night and I kept getting an error that wanted me to authorize my ps3 even though its authorized, I have ps + too. I looked in the store and my download list to dl it again and its not there anymore. Anyone else have this problem?

If anyone needs a beta code and doesn't have Uncharted 3 or PS+, here's a bunch! (do pr for sony)

Why does your player cover like half the screen in OTS view? :P

This has become the it thing for game developers. I HATE the OTS camera view of most Third Person Shooters. The characters take up too much of the screen and makes the game feel more claustrophobic then it really is. This is not a Starhawk specific issue either. I don't get it. Most of these developers nailed the camera in previous games. The PS2 Socom Camera view was awesome as was the Warhawk camera because the camera was centered and pulled back a bit.

Also anyone ever watch someone play with these OTS views and notice they move around aiming at the ground to get a better view? Again I am not just picking on Starhawk. Check out this clip from Resident Evil Operation Racoon City:

http://youtu.be/V0rEq2bF3yw?t=6m51s

Notice where that reticle is aiming?

Now look at where this guy is aiming in the following video:

http://youtu.be/awenocNoasQ?t=3m32s

And another: http://youtu.be/Xwr5oyyx8wY?t=53s

Now in both of those videos the camera is pulled back and centered and magically the reticle is not aiming at the ground and is instead aiming straight ahead where an enemy would be. Seriously go watch most modern TPS games and in almost everyone of them you will find the player looking at the ground to gain a better sight line.

Sorry for the rant, but I just don't get the infatuation with the close up OTS camera nowadays.

PS. last video I SWEAR! But this is the official gameplay trailer from Sony themselves released 8 months ago around the announcement. It bugged me from day I saw this. Notice where the resting position of the reticle is.....

Not digging this. It's like a mix of Warhawk with a "heavier" shooter. I don't know how to explain it. In Warhawk you felt like a little toy soldier, just jump in the map, arm yourself and wreck shit. It was strictly about the battle. In turn, Starhawk is cluttered with big scale tools while being much more "personal" in terms of combat. The aiming, the character animations, it feels like it wants to be a corridor shooter. It doesn't mix well with the Warhawk scale. Framerate wasn't there either. Again, not digging it. Too bad...

Love the game now. Quite the turn around from my original stance. I already started having fun but now it's almost an amazing game. Brighten the overall view and make things like pickups, buildings and vehicles more distinct and standout from the environment and this game is golden.

I was on the opposing side of a team of pilots that strategically did flybys pounding our base with everything they had and circled around repeating the process. There were three of them and it felt amazing being in that battle. Warhawk always had the best "war" stories for me but that experience was something warhawk won't match. Because in WH, those pilots would have hovered to tear our asses apart almost unfairly. But here, it felt legit. We were getting destroyed at that point (physically, but we won with more captures), though not overwhelmed.

How the hell do you take down a hawk? I swear I fire locked on rockets and I build the big turrets but they don't see to die.

Got to agree with you.

I think that RE game from Gamecube is the blame for this crap. I also hate how the camera is left of center that really pisses me off for no other reason than I hate asymmetry! >:|

How the hell do you take down a hawk? I swear I fire locked on rockets and I build the big turrets but they don't see to die.

Multiple beam turrets spaced to take advantage of multiple firing angles, and at high elevation is your best option. Taking down a flying hawk is still a pain in the balls with the rocket launcher.

The powder gun is so ineffective I abandoned attempting to use sniper fire to down hawks like I used to be able to do in Warhawk. :(

I just played my first few games of this. By the third game I sort of had the basic idea of how to bu ild stuff and how to kill stuff even if I only managed to get into a hawk once and immediately smashed it into a mountain and died.

There is a lot to figure out. People over in the twisted metal thread are claiming to have a tough time as noobs...this is something else. I hope there is some sort of tutorial or a hefty booklet with the game.

Also, it's great to see Sony releasing two of the most different, ambitious console multiplayer titles of the generation. Both within months of each other too haha.

Edit: for those of know what you're doing is there more flying involved? Or should I not get my hopes up. It seems like everyone is on the ground except for the rare hawk I see cruising around.
