Starting Bloodborne for the first time. Anything I should know?

Does someone have a good online map guide or something?

This is my first Souls style game and I am not finding it very difficult at all outside of being completely confused about how to proceed further. I am constantly running into locked off areas, etc. and am just completely lost. I'm not that far into the game, I'm at the Cathedral Ward and have opened a gate or two but I seem to keep going back towards the starting area. The last time I tried playing I ended up back in the starting area with some guy sniping me or something from across the way. I have not fought Vicar Amelia and have no idea how to even get to her. When I read guides I just get completely turned around and have no idea where they are telling me to go.

The wiki has good maps of the general layouts, at least.

I cannot emphasize this enough in Bloodborne threads:

Run is a great function. Run if you cannot win the fight. Run if you know the path and want to avoid certain enemies. Run if you're outnumbered or outclassed.

Run until you get better to face them. And even then, Run.

The best and most important advice I got here on Gaf...

Roll/dodge FORWARD. This is a big deal.
The last Souls game I played was original Dark Souls, so it took quite a while to adjust to this game's aggressive combat

Still trying to get the timing on the parry strike down

Finally started playing this (again), and got to the Cleric Beast for the first time. Well that was an oh fuck moment. Whatever happened to the nice fog doors so I can at least mentally prepare myself for a boss fight?

And seriously, how far away is the next lantern? I like opening up shortcuts but Dark Souls had bonfires at reasonable distances

At the beginning of the game, after you drop some stairs and find your very first lantern (presumably), there's a locked door right next to it. Have you opened it yet? That's the best shortcut for the boss.

There's no fog doors in the first try, they only appear if you die.

I had used it for my first attempt a few months ago, but I'm making better progress with the Saw Cleaver. Why is the Cane so good?

It has 20% damage bonus against kin (cane form) and 20% damage bonus against beasts (whip form). It's a good weapon, but you can say the same thing about the majority IMO. This game has some really amazing weapons all around.

My favourite is the Saw Spear, identical to the Saw Cleaver when not transformed, but has a much better moveset while transformed. It also has considerably more range. You can get it very early in the game, before any boss actually. Give it a try if you find it :)

Btw, the transformed attack (L1) is probably the best in those weapons, you can easily stagger some of the worst enemies with it.

Rather than littering bonfires everywhere, Bloodborne usually has just a lantern per level with smartly placed shortcuts that usually demarcate the halfway point or the quickest path to the boss. It'll fuck your mind up once you're in the
Forbidden Woods
.

Transformed version of Threaded Cane has good distance and has serrated damage (strong against bleeding things), but most people probably just refer to it being good for "style". Otherwise it's a difficult beginner weapon due to low starting damage, weak knockback (hard to stunlock enemies), low rally, and slow damage curve due to being a dex weapon.

Oh, another great attack that you can't find in Dark Souls is the side-dash + R1, you can dodge attacks and strike back REALLY fast. It's clear that the AI isn't prepared to deal with this attack if you use a transformed Saw Spear for example, since the range is brutal (right dodge + R1 in this case).

Cane is the hardest starting weapon and one of the best endgame starting weapons.

The cane form is solid against single enemies and the whip form is great for crowds or distance hits.

Cane4lyfe.

It was one of the things I loved most about Demons and Dark Souls, but no one does grotesque monster designs like Miyazaki and a Souls game. Nothing else comes close. Bloodborne only reaffirms that

I don't disagree that the Threaded Cane is a great weapon; my first playthrough was a dexterity build and it was the weapon I exclusively used (except for one instance) up until I got the Blade of Mercy.

It's just that, as a recommendation for beginners, it's a really difficult starting weapon, speaking from experience. The ability of a weapon to stunlock alone makes a really huge difference in terms of difficulty. Especially during my fight with
Rom, the Vacuous Spider
on my first playthrough, it felt so impossible that I had to switch to Tonitrus just to get through it.

Endgame, I'd argue that every single weapon is completely viable, so best depends on what you feel like using.

Play the dlc and judge when you find it manageable, it's late game but your call. Experiment with weapons, materials for late upgrades are harder to get by but should be able to get a feel. Hope you enjoy it, is still the best new ip of this generation for me.

Absolutely. And since you're just around the Cleric Beast area, you haven't seen anything yet. :D Totally envy this first journey of yours!

Well, for one it is one of the very, very few weapons in this game that is strong against more than 1 type of enemies. In fact, it is actually strong against three types of enemies. The whip is Serrated, so extra bonus against beasts. The cane form is Righteous, so it's strong against enemies weak against Church Weapons such as the folks at Cainhurst Castle and the ghost enemy at the Catacomb. Then, in its cane form, it has thrust attacks, which is very strong against various types of Kin Enemies (particularly the alien blob thingy and the the one that absorb your Insight)

Secondly, it has range. I wouldn't call the weapon trivializes them, but there are certain encounters in the game where being able to attack for a distance is a very valuable asset, such as when fighting against the Grand Cathedral Hunter where the TC outranges his Chikage (and the whip staggers him too, for good measure), or when you are fighting Amygdala and you don't have strong enough gun.

Speaking of staggering, both the cane (the rapid R1 attacks) and whip (strong R2 attacks) forms are surprisingly capable of staggering human-sized enemies very well.

Also I am fond of always have the option of shooting my enemies for visceral attacks, which the TC also allows you to do.

It is perhaps the most versatile weapon to deal with all sorts of situations that Bloodborne throws at you. Not the strongest, but certainly gets the job done.
