• Hey Guest. Check out your NeoGAF Wrapped 2025 results here!

State of Decay PC early access release date is tomorrow.

Bought it and enjoyed it on Xbox Live. The PC version looks quite a bit sharper, I hope there is some significant DLC or mods added down the road due to the new platform. I would definitely jump back in for that.

There's Sandbox mode, no date yet but will hopefully be out before years end. Apart from that, they haven't talked about DLC. I'm personally hoping for some new town DLC at some point, new weapons too (crossbow) and the return of the generators.

I thought that's exactly what it is, no?

This is what makes me think differently:

is a test version. It’s not ready to be reviewed. It will not be perfect. It may still have crashes

Maybe they mean as they test keyboard/mouse support it'll introduce bugs? But when I read that it makes me think the actual game is incomplete.

Looks interesting, do you think it will be a game with a active mod community even without real modding tools?

The game was already hacked on 360. I recall seeing one guy post pics of him playing as npcs and stuff. Mod community should be decent.

It's an incomplete port, hence early access. They're asking the community for ideas to implement in the game...

"Early access" is just a friendlier term for alpha/beta/prerelease. They haven't said anything to the effect of it not having feature parity with the console version.

I'm well aware what early access means, thanks though. Just saying that they'll be adding things to the game so it's incomplete. From what I read it'll be missing console features for now which will be added over time. Sounds like an early build of the game.

So basically "keep an open mind".

Sure thing. I was gonna buy this game. I'm glad they're bringing it to PC finally. I've heard good things

AND I LOVE ME SOME ZOMBIES

I'll definitely double dip, but I can wait until the "official" release, with KB+M support and hopefully a lot of bugs/kinks worked out (which is what this "early access" aims to do). Kinda burned myself out on the XBLA version for now.

Sorry. The context I got out of the leading conversation was that the Early Access label was running contrary to the idea that ultimately this would be something other than, at the very least, a port of the console version.

No need to be sorry. I probably have no idea what I'm talking about lol

So you have to buy the final version separately when it comes out?

"Those willing to throw in with us at Undead Labs and your fellow early adopters will automatically get the final version, completely free, with no need to restart, when we officially launch later this year."

I wonder how much of the game it will include. Would be nice to have a full map to run around on at least, right?

It's supposed to be the full story mode I think. Just no sandbox mode yet and no mouse/keyboard support yet and it may not run as good as it will when it's finished updating.

YEAAAAAAAHHHH!!!!
FINALLY!

I quit that game a while a go because the low frame rate was bothering, and ever since then I was holding out for the PC release.

Ohhh man this is going to be sooooo gooood!

I'm okay with all that. I've been worried about "beta fatigue" lately with some of these early adopting games, but I think I would be willing to wait for sandbox mode.

I'm just hoping it runs...acceptably.

That's not the official release of the game though, keep playing Gta instead of bothering with an alpha/beta if you lack the time.

Yeah, that's what I'm gonna do. I've been following the game since really early on in its development, so I was going to buy any version of the game as soon as possible. But yeah, it'll be a better experience later on anyway.

Yeah I'm not a person who's a fan of buying games before they're done adding features to it. But since this is supposed to be the full story mode, which I was going to play anyway, then I can make an exception for this.

Does anyone know if there will be coop eventually? I'm probably gonna buy this either way, but I'd be much happier knowing I can play with some friends in the future.

True and I'm hoping that means the updates will come fast.

Can anyone sell me on this game? What makes it so good?

I'm wikiing it to get a better sense of the situation. I know it's a freeroaming game with zombies, which I'm all about.

The game is in an open world, where the player's choices are an important factor

Nice, nice.

Players are able to choose a location to build a base in. Structures such as watch towers, gardens, sleeping quarters, kitchens, workshops, medical bays, and barricades can be constructed to defend against the infected population, help survivors recover faster, and build explosives and other tools.

Oh I love that.

To obtain these supplies, the player will need to go on raids to abandoned supermarkets and many other locations

That's awesome. Sounds like GTA meets Project Zomboid. I'm sold.

No need to go on...

The player will be able to rescue other AI survivors to help with defense, build facilities, and repair cars/guns (with the appropriate facilities). They can also be sent out to loot, find a new base location, or to come pick up supplies found by the player. Once a high enough relationship is developed with these new characters, they will become playable.[3][4] The player's choices will affect how the gameplay evolves.[3] The game world is 16 square kilometers[5] but because of mountains, it is 8 square kilometers of playable area.[6]

The non-player characters (NPCs) in State of Decay will vary in skin color and gender, they sometimes show signs of aging in the game. They can set up bases to survive which the player character can find while exploring. Saving NPCs will add them to the community of survivors. Each NPC can be assigned tasks like doing runs to collect items, or scouting. Player characters can trade with other survivor bases for items which they excel in, such as weaponry. NPCs can become trapped when on a run for items, although the player will have the option to rescue them. If they are not rescued, they may die or become lost. There are 30 NPCs in State of Decay which will spawn in a semi-random arrangement, while 20 Story NPCs will always spawn in a designated location.[7]

The game features 99 different guns and between 30 to 40 melee weapons to be found around the game world.[8][9][10] The higher a character's skill with guns, the lower the chance of them jamming. Jammed guns will need to be repaired at any home base. High skills with guns will also result in lower recoil. Gunshots will attract zombies, to combat this weapons can be equipped with suppressors.[7] Each gun has a decibel rating seen in the game's inventory; higher decibel ratings result in louder gunshot.[11] There are three classes of melee weapons featured in the game; light blunt, light edged, and heavy weapons. Each class will have advantages and disadvantages. As characters use weapons, their skill will increase.[9][10]

During the game, player characters can enter buildings. While loot will often be found, so will zombies. Fenced buildings can be turned into a base. Only one base can be occupied at a time, they can be overrun, and relocated. A large number of customization options exist for the base, including, but not limited to, gardens, kitchens, tents for sleeping, storage areas, radio station for communication, workshop for upgrading and repairing weapons, training centers, generators for power, guard towers, and walls for defense.[12] Any building that is not destroyed can be turned into an outpost. An outpost is a place for players to sleep in or store items. Zombies cannot spawn around an outpost.[citation needed] The number of outposts available to players is dependent on the size of the player character's base.

Already looking like a better beta buy than Cubeworld.

I've been looking forward to this a bunch, but the early access label kinda kills my game boner a little. Has there even been a game that has left early access yet?

I'm going to pick it up regardless, but I'm so tired of exciting new releases all being in some unknown state of alpha/beta with no promises of what they will eventually become.

Glad that the PC players get to experience this game. No doubt it will be visually better than the 360, but I enjoyed this game immensely! I am more than hoping its success paves the way for a next gen sequel.

I am double dipping just because the graphics and technical issues with 360 version were very disappointing even thought Ienjoyed and beat it. Also cant wait for the mod community to hopefully create a co op mod

I am ready for this!

Me to!

So how was the melee combat in the XBLA version? I didn't watch the IGN commentary all the way through, but there seem to be a disconnect between the swinging animation and the impact on the opponents. (Probably due to the alpha code on PC build)

Also this game has huge potential for modding.

Kind of stupid that you need a controller to play this game. I mean, what's the point of porting over to PC when you can't even use good ol' keyboard and mouse?

You don't need a controller to play this game. You need a controller to play the

version.

What you’ll see this Friday, if you choose to join forces with us to make the PC version kick butt, is a test version. It’s not ready to be reviewed. It will not be perfect. It may still have crashes. What it won’t have is a keyboard and mouse interface…not at first. Why not? Over the next however many weeks, we will be putting up versions of the keyboard interface and using your comments and feedback to make it awesome. Right this minute, the Early Access version requires an Xbox 360 controller.

Right there. In the OP.

ARMA III was early access and just released this month, that's the only one to my knowledge. And a bunch of games have done the paid alpha/beta thing outside of the Steam Early Access label.
