Screw it, I'm in. Downloading now...been getting rare display driver resets in Warframe and I need to play another PC game for a while to see if they persist. This should do nicely.
Why is 4K the only downsampling option? I hold a pretty steady 30 FPS at the resolution but I'd much rather play at 60 and at 1080P I have tons of unused power.
So though I haven't played this yet, yeah I'll agree with other people's statement that blacks are crushed like crazy. The contrast in this picture is so bad.
I really like what I have played so far. I will just have to be patient for more resolutions. The resolution I can stand to use makes the mini-map get covered by the current objective thing.

I don't see the problem with the darkness in this game. Some of you guys might just need to calibrate your monitors? For me it was pretty dark, but not so dark that I can't see anything. And I haven't touched the gamma settings.
I just bumped the gamma up two notches and it's fine. Not too bright, just enough to keep me using my flashlight.
Anyways I haven't had much time to explore like I planned to...seems like they always have 2-3 missions for me to worry about. Maybe it slows down later? Right now I'm cycling through the first guy, Maya, and some lady with the 'psychopath' trait. I'm not sure what that does but goddamn I put a 9mm pistol on her and I'm just popping heads left and right.
Haven't really had any close calls yet...worst was maybe when I got to half health as maya a few times. I keep trying to bring people with me but it seems like they get bored and go home rather fast for some reason? Is it because I can't bring them with me on missions? Having an AI with you is actually quite helpful so it's a bit annoying when they vanish randomly.
Damn, I was really on the fence about this one but it's a lot of fun once you get used to a bit of the clunkiness.
On the Ultra setting it runs kinda all over the place (as low as 32fps) on my 670 and i5-2320 but the 'Maximum' setting runs really well and turns off the very heavy motion blur which is kind of a bonus. I can appreciate good motion blur but in this game it just looks crazy. Hopefully the dev will unlock the config files or add more fine tuning graphics options in future updates.
Ah looks really nice, way sharper than on 360 as was expected of course.
I'm not sure if I'm going to double dip unless I hear something people making crazy mods for it though, or if it goes on a significant sale. The 360 version ran well enough and looked good enough for my purposes.
Anyway I hope you PC people are enjoying the game. It takes a while to get used to the mechanics, in fact I abandoned my first game and had to start a 2nd game before I really got the hang of it.
Protips:
LB + A to flying kick, the LB + Y to finish off a zombie = best way to melee kill a zombie especially when you're just getting started and don't have many skills
Silencers for your guns are a must, you can find them or build them in the machine shop. However gun use should be kept to a minimum, it's really a melee focused game (at least that's how I played it).
When you find a material out in the world and you want to bring it back to base, before you pick it up radio a guy to come pick it up. Then pick it up yourself and bring it back to base. For some reason this allows you to actually get 2 of the material instead of 1 (unless it's been patched out.)
Big backpacks for all your characters are a must, they're mostly found around camp sites if memory serves although sometimes you can find them in buildings.
Always be sure you have enough beds for everyone in your base, this is extremely important as otherwise they don't get enough rest and will be useless when you take them out for missions.
Build outposts around your base (any building can be turned into an outpost just about) and arm them with traps. This will greatly greatly greatly reduce the numbers of hordes that will get to your base. Outpost bonuses (extra ammo, materials etc) are nice but their primary use (for me) was protection.
Possible base spoilers (read if you don't care about locations in the game being spoiled, don't read if you would rather find them for yourself
McReady farm is a great place for a base, it's in the middle of the map. Another great base is the truck depot, it's on the north west side of the town in the bottom left of the map.
It was worse, because it wasnt HDR correct, but it was still great.

Any info about cryengine console? Because You can change a lot settings there. For example crushed blacks are probably due to color grading, which You can disable with console.

Well, it was never this loud before, and while I may be wrong, I don't think this game should be more demanding than, say, Crysis 3 or Sleeping Dogs downsampled, which I played with no problems at all.

Ok, I'll try playing on Maximum today to see if it's more quiet. Thank you

Hmm. I was already to grab this but seeing the screens shots, the contrast/gamma stuff is really offputting. Kind of waiting to see more screens from others to see if this is just a preference thing that some users have or if the colours always look so oversaturated and such.

Ever since I tried the multiplayer mode of Pandora Tomorrow, I've realized the potential of black crush as a gameplay element. Spies versus Mercs. As a merc, you could either use a flashlight to light an area (making your location obvious to spies) or you could stand still and let your eyes adjust to the darkness (which slowly removed the black crush, allowing you to see otherwise hidden spies).
The idea is to force you to use game features with corresponding drawbacks to light the environment. It makes for interesting choices, honestly.
I've played the 360 version twice through I have a pretty good grasp on the gamepkay mechanics and systems.
First impressions of PC version:
Resolution is greatly improved. By a lot, not nearly the smudge-fest that the 360 version was/is.
Framerate is good(60 fps on a GTX 680) though it does seem to dip in random spots on the map. Sometimes as low as 20 fps seemingly out of nowhere. But more often than not, 60 fps.
I've yet to be able to pull off a stealth kill. Tool tips keep popping up telling me how to do it, controls just won't let me do it. That aside, controls are directly ported over from the 360 aside from the glaring oversight of the stealth kill.
POP-IN is bad. Very bad, much worse than the 360. It's not game-breaking, but definitely mood breaking.
All in all it's still great, it's the exact same game as the 360 version, minus the inability to stealth melee kill. It's a great game and anyone interested remotely in the genre should buy it. With a few more patches it'll be great. This is early access, so all these criticisms must be taken with a grain of salt. But I find myself still enjoying the core mechanics of the game even if pop-in is worse than it was on the 360.
Does anyone have zombies clipping through walls often? Sometimes like half the zombie is sticking out of a fence when they get beside it. And during a besieged mission some weren't even opening the door to get it, they would go through it.

Outside of when it's loading, I never drop under 60fps on a gtx 580. It does seem capped at 60 though, not like it particularly matters much, just in case someone dearly wanted to run their zombie game at 120 fps.
I had some issues with the contrast, I mean at the start of the game I couldn't even see people's faces when they were talking to me. Bumping up the gamma a little and using flashlights/headlights worked just fine really. Game looks fine to me outside of occasional animation jank.
Haven't run into any bugs more dire than a zombie clipping through walls, or magical semi-boarded windows being able to fully block my gunshots even when I'm firing through gaps. But those probably have nothing to do with the PC version.
This game is unplayable for me with the brightness/gamma whatever the way it is. It's so much worse than the Stalker games. In the Stalker games it is wicked dark at night, but you have the option to turn your light on and see, while also making yourself more visible. In State of Decay it is just black, and if I turn my light on it just gives me a bright white spot in the middle of the blackness. The contrast is cranked so high it just makes a hash out of any details, dark or light. It's even a problem during the day most of the time. Wish I had waited to buy it until it was out of alpha tbh. Also, the flashlight picks and chooses what objects it will illuminate. I can walk up to certain things and point it at them and they stay black.
Kind of annoying that I can't bring someone with me and have them carry a rucksack around. And the 'supply runs' are so laughably long I could bring back everything myself in that time, plus I need to babysit them anyways.
Well, at least I can have someone guard me while I lug around a rucksack. I had my first injury when I thought I'd be fine carrying one back by myself from one of the closest areas to my base, but right outside the walls I got jumped by 10+ zombies (that somehow weren't marked as a horde) and everyone in the base just kind of sat around on lawn chairs watching me die. Fortunately you get that adrenaline rush or whatever that revives you, I just left the pack behind and retrieved it later.
But yeah I relocated my base and I really like this new location a lot better. Only thing is it's hella far from everything so supply runs aren't too practical...which is fine because I'm not even gonna bother with those anymore. Really sucked having to start over from scratch, and I think I could do a lot better if I just restarted my game but I'm gonna tough it out. Geez I have 5 hours on this game already somehow, and I keep wanting to load it back up and scrounge up some more stuff to get my library built...
I'm asking this again, does console work? Because if it works maybe both r_width and r_height commands are unlocked and You can change Your resolution this way.
