• Hey Guest. Check out your NeoGAF Wrapped 2025 results here!

State of Decay PC early access release date is tomorrow.

I'm asking this again, does console work? Because if it works maybe both r_width and r_height commands are unlocked and You can change Your resolution this way.

I don't see any way to get into the console, and a search turned up nothing. Surprisingly, not having proper resolution support for my monitor is like 5th on my list of issues, so I'm going to stop trying to find a workaround just wait for a patch.

I have it on my 360. Should I double dip?

I've been going back and forth on this myself. I'm so far into the "do it" side of the park, it's almost painful! I actually enjoy playing it on my 360 and I am only running a 560ti 2gb. Hearing people saying they are having full fans with noticeably better cards is kinda scary...

Has anyone been able to do the sneak attack? I'm using a 360 controller and everything works for the most part, I just can't sneak attack. I've done it hundreds of times on the XBLA release, but can't seem to do it here.

Yeah, I do it all the time, doesn't seem to be broken.

Works fine for me although I wouldn't blame anyone who was having trouble- it was a pretty stupid idea to force players to hold down the run key to do a stealth attack.

Do the ai companions alert the zombies? I stopped using stealth because I would be crawling along and my ai buddies would be running around me in circles.

I just wanted to pop in to say this game is incredible. I love the dynamic of having a home base with people possessing different personalities/skill sets and your ability to send them out on scavenging missions. Then there's the whole group interaction and how all the people you bring in get along on top of how well built your base is to begin with. I like having to think if it's smart to send more people to get supplies if I know I will have to start using some of my weaker companions who I might need to help out while away on my own mission. That kind of choice is fun and interesting to me, especially since travel isn't so easy even with cars. Having to save a companion while on an important mission on the other side of the map can be annoying for some I think, but for me it's simply a consequence of you being too greedy perhaps. I think that's pretty cool to have to deal with. I start to get attached to certain characters if they are more successful scavenging on their own as well since they prove to be very valuable once self sufficient. It's too bad I can't also grow to like characters because of their personalities, but with a game of this budget I can understand limitations have to be set in regards to the scope of the game.

Being able to upgrade my base and progress each character I use is also really cool. One question though, do AI controlled characters progress and get stronger by fighting on their own? Or do they have to be controlled by the player to do that? Nonetheless the different attributes and special abilities are a nice touch to further differentiate characters. I find myself rarely feeling like every character I run into is more of clone than an individual, even if they don't have much of a backstory. This game actually made me not really care about the overarching plot, it made me care about the communities of people I was dealing with and how to survive. I think that's a great accomplishment. Inter-communal relationships seems like something that could be explored in a possible sequel with a bigger budget.

Overall the game feels really well done and as a 20 dollar early access title it works very well for me. I'm getting around 45-60 fps @ 1080 with settings on ultra. Game is decent looking but nothing spectacular, suitable for a game with many models on screen at once. I'm more than happy with my purchase.

The people that said they played for a bit and will come back later are gonna be in for a rude surprise. I haven't double-dipped yet precisely because I don't have the time to dedicate this week to a real playthrough

I didn't even notice any pop in at all in the few hours I played. Not really something you have to worry about at night either lol.

The no 16:10 thing isn't that big a deal either, I just play 1080p instead of 1200p, everything's still 1:1 on the monitor, and I quickly forget about the bars when playing.

When I tried switching between max and ultra in a few spots, it looked mostly the same, except ultra had more motion blur which I didn't like, and SSAO, but it really killed the performance, so I stuck with the max settings.

Bought it and it runs flawlessly, unless I go into a new 'larger zone' then I get a few hiccups. Kinda waiting for the sandbox mode as I can't dedicate a daily routine to this and I already missed a day with almost everything going to shit.

Quick question though ... is the only way I can use a damn radio is by finding a spot inside a house that I can interact with?

Huh? Really? I've been using these shitty joypad controls and didn't need to?

Well it didn't feel very good and the keys are pretty confusing but it still worked. I have since switched over to my gamepad however.

This game is making my cpu hit 70 degrees celsius which I don't think is right.

If you are using a keyboard I think there is a problem with the way the radio key is bound. It's down on the 360 controller's dpad, and I'm pretty sure I could always get to it.

Are there still chances for a coop mode? I'm not that interested in the game without one. I know that at one point they talked about one for the 360, than said that's not gonna happen on 360 but didn't mention PC at all

70 isn't dangerous or anything, but you might want to make sure there's no dust in your cpu heatsink.

Has anyone used Nvidia Inspector? I'm trying to limit the fps to 30 in the game, but having some issues. If I limit the fps to 30 in the Global Base Profile it works, but that would effect every game. So I tried creating a SoD profile, added the executable to it and then limited the fps 30 and it doesn't work. Never tried adding profiles before so I don't know what I could possibly be doing wrong.

Have You tried running game with -sys_maxfps 30 command or add this in any .cfg file?

Jumped in. Quite the game! I initially felt it was a little underbaked, but then got to the first 'town' and began to see what all the fuss was about.

Pretty much the action Walking Dead game we deserve. Good stuff. Lurking about the suburbs at night is quite the experience!

Have you tried Adaptive VSync in the NVIDIA Control Panel? Alternatively, frame rate limiter in EVGA Precision X and similar apps.

Anyone having bad pop-in? Anything below ultra seems to have really bad pop-in.

I haven't noticed any, but then again I'm playing on Ultra. I watched a video review of the 360 version and it had some really bad pop in, could definitely see lower settings having some of that.

i have a 650ti; think this game will run better than on 360? how's it compare in that respect? great game but it was a little stuttery on xbox.

also if you're pumping up your brightness you're playing the game on easy. the whole point of night is that it's supposed to scare the fuck out of you and make you vulnerable. what i loved most about the game is how it takes no bullshit. screw up with a character and he's gone for good. that's how the game is, loading your save or other pseudo cheating is cheating you from a fantastic gameplay experience.

also are there any deals/does the game trade for cheaper with keys or anything? fantastic game well worth $20 but i already own it

Using Precision doesn't seem to be any different than Inspector, I would have to constantly switch the limiter off after playing one specific game. I messed around with adaptive vsync half refresh rate to lock it at 30 but, now this could just be odd perception, but it seems it introduces noticeable lag in menus and movement in game. When I use Inspector to limit the global profile to 30fps and use D3DOverrider for triple buffering and vsync, that lag doesn't seem to be there.

I don't know about other people but I'm finding this game far too easy.

I've moved my base to the truck warehouse area and set up some outposts around it. Never had a single issue with attacks, no one has died. And doing stuff at night is easy. Just shine your car light into the house or w/e or beep your horn and run everything that comes out over.

Got a group of 15 and almost filled my inventory with resources. Maybe as the story progresses it gets harder though but I've already got access to the 3rd town.

I just found that doctor that ed needs. But I can't seem to talk to him when I press Y. My character just says hi, and then nothing happens. Bug or am I doing something wrong?

You need to do a story mission involving the Wilkersons, then when you go back to your home base the doc will show up.

it's very easy if you cheese cars and such. it's as hard as you play it. use cars everywhere and cheese zombies out of houses and it will be very easy. traverse the world at night on foot and good luck having an easy time.

i will tell you that taking the 'non easy' path makes it way more fun, but games like madden have the 'easy if you cheese/hard if you play different styles' aspect as well, and everyone online there just cheeses screen plays and running backwards with QBs; i'm not surprised people enjoy playing SoD in such a boring way as well

the game gives you tons of options play many different playstyles, even with different characters. have a melee character, have a shotgun one, have a sniping one, play stealth at night instead of driving a car everywhere. this game certainly brings points out who has an imagination and who just wants to win.

Which one would that be? I already have the mission to get a doctor for ed....

You'll be told to go visit the Wilkersons when it's time. Notably, you'll be threatened by Mickey as you approach their base. If you haven't been told by Lily to go pick him up from the Wilkerson's base then you've probably just found him before it was time. Did you see the Jacob/Eli stuff first?

Press tilda key.

%USER%/game.cfg

Those files don't seem to exist. Pressing tilde does nothing.

Really annoying that I can't seem to set my resolution manually. Or pick one in-game. I can choose 1080p or 2160p. I can't choose any of my resolutions in between.

I agree with what a lot of folks are saying. The game seems way too dark during the day. It's like there is 0 ambient lighting. Using SweetFX to just brighten the darks a bit helps. Better than straight increasing overall gamma.

I don't like the gamepad controls either. I'm just too used to looking around with a mouse. The mouse\keyboard controls are terrible as they are so I guess I'll wait for a patch...

Ah then it's definitely because I just went there before it was time. I just head that ed was getting worse. So i googled where the doc was and rushed over there :P

Really enjoying the game despite having numerous minor gripes about it. They're all probably intrinsic to the game rather than due to it being 'early access' anyway. The one thing that's really gotten to me, though, is Besieged missions.

Holy shit.

I just had one that lasted about 15 minutes because there was a 'Big Un' outside and every time I would try to deal with him, it would attract more stragglers, all while the friendly AI did absolutely nothing but shout "Crush its fucking skull!" from inside. Even after finally taking the big guy down, I had to run around each side of the house twice to take out more zombies that had accumulated and hope I didn't attract any more in the process. I don't know why they wouldn't go through the windows so the AI could actually contribute; they chose to just claw at the side of the house instead.

I never ever want to do one of those missions again, but they seem kind of necessary in building up relationships? Please tell me that I'm wrong.

Picked it up this weekend and have been spending more time with it than GTA V. I don't know if that makes me crazy. Anyway didn't pick it up on 360 so it's fresh for me, pretty awesome game. Surprisingly deep.

Wait, what? If you're out of the game for a day it actually translates that into a missed day in the world?

They're not the only ways to build trust, but easily the most common. In any given playthrough at least one enclave will spawn several of those missions and failure to respond will lead to their deaths.

It's not a literal 1:1 thing, but your morale and supplies will drop over time even if you're not playing. It sounds awful at first, but the game has been nerfed so allies can't die or get sick while you're not playing. Things don't go to shit unless you left them in shit. When you return after a day or even week of not playing you'll find your supply levels and morale has dropped. Your people do scavenge though so the decrease is off set just a bit.

Well... I double dipped. And so glad I did but for some reason it seems a touch more difficult this (5th start and hopefully 3rd finish) around. Not killing as fast as before and seems to be less items to start in the camping area. Was a tad worried about performance but on the slider below Ultra it runs fairly well, only a weird texture swap on Zed and of course the same collision issues as the 360 version. Glad this is on PC so more people can enjoy it but also glad it's MS published/owned as they can definitely use the IP's.

Yes. This is a major feature of the game. Even when you are not playing, the game
world goes on and when you log back into play there's tons of stuff that usually
happens ie; your base and survivors getting attacked, people dying, etc
