If you are watching Anderson, AG fired his ass.

Good. I just hope this guy doesn't go total psycho and go assault/murder the guy :(

I mean the guy is THAT close to being obsessive. its not that far of a leap to violence.

If he got fired after he was on CNN then this guys gonna be around for a few more weeks, I'd imagine, making the conservative talk show circuit.

I'd expect him to be on Fox and Friends by the end of next week, the Daily Show the following week, book deal the following week, Generic Republican Campaign the next...

...and then in 2 months he'll be caught blowing a black guy and have to explain how it's not cuz he's gay, but because he's just a fan of aesthetically pleasing phallic objects. Nothing sexual, unless you consider Van Gogh gay, you homophobes.

I could see that happening. He will however twist the story around as usual.

Michiguama.

they never have been and never will be trusted. It's what they stand for and represent that is the problem. Most people who choose to join this organization are marginalized and disowned by their communities. Minorities in particular. I could explain more and why (Michigan man here), but I don't really think anyone cares.

Assistant AG takes leave amid gay-bashing controversy
Laura Berman / The Detroit News

An assistant attorney general who has attracted national attention for a controversial blog that ridicules and denounces a University of Michigan student leader for his gay advocacy, religious beliefs and character has taken a personal leave following intense public scrutiny, a spokesman for Attorney General Mike Cox said today.

Cox spokesman John Sellek said, however, Andrew Shirvell will be the subject of a disciplinary hearing after he returns to work at an undetermined future date.

Shirvell's decision to go on leave came a day after Cox told CNN he didn't intend to fire Shirvell, citing civil service rules that protect government employees from being "fired willy-nilly" for exercising their rights of free speech.

Cox said he hadn't earlier read all of Shirvell's blog, "Chris Armstrong Watch," which dogs Armstrong, the 21-year-old, openly gay president of U-M's student government and accuses him of "anti-Christian behavior," "mocking God," promoting homosexuality and trying "to recruit your sons and daughters" into the gay lifestyle.

"I'm at fault here," Cox said. "I've been saying for weeks that (Shirvell's) been acting like a bully, that his behavior is immature, but it's after-hours and protected by the First Amendment."

But Cox also took a shot at Gov. Jennifer Granholm, who posted a Twitter item Thursday saying she would have fired Shirvell.

"I don't know why she's so freaking irresponsible. ... She went to Harvard Law School," Cox said. "The civil service rules are a huge shield for free speech, and she knows that."

As governor, Granholm enacted policies applying to state workers that bar discrimination on the basis of sexual orientation -- but those rules apply to the workplace, not to what employees say or blog after-hours. The rules do allow Cox to fire employees for "just cause," including "conduct unbecoming a state employee," said Matt Fedorchuk, a spokesman for the state department of civil service.

What determines that conduct isn't explicitly described.

Shirvell's leave caps a scandal that became national news after the Michigan Daily student newspaper described Shirvell's blog in early September. The blog, which closed to the public Thursday, called Armstrong "a radical homosexual activist, racist, elitist and liar" who was "advancing a radical homosexual agenda."

Published reports say the blog also claimed Armstrong is "Satan's representative on the student assembly" and a "privileged pervert."

Several pages on Facebook have urged Cox to fire Shirvell, including one that has more than 6,000 "fans."

Throughout the scandal, Cox rebuked the assistant -- who he described as the "lowest level" staff attorney -- but said he wouldn't fire him.

Armstrong and Shirvell weren't available for comment Thursday.

Armstrong is seeking a personal protection order against Shirvell, who has picketed locations frequented by Armstrong, including his residence and Ann Arbor bars. A hearing is scheduled Monday, Cox said.

Also Thursday, Diane Brown, a spokeswoman for campus police, confirmed Shirvell is subject to an ongoing investigation of "harassing or stalking" and banned from campus. Shirvell was read a trespass warning on Sept. 14 that bars him from setting foot on campus, Brown said. Shirvell is appealing the order, but no hearing date has been set.

Cox also said Armstrong is "still to me a kid" while Shirvell, 10 years older, is behaving in an immature manner.

"I'm his employer, and I have to start with the premise that he's a civil service employee and what can be done within that," Cox said.

Jay Kaplan, a staff attorney for the American Civil Liberties Union, backed Cox's interpretation of civil service rules on Thursday.

"You can say what you want on your own time. ... We believe that the answer to hate speech is more speech," Kaplan said.

Larry Dubin, a professor at the University of Detroit Mercy School of Law, said he doubts that Shirvell can effectively perform his job representing the public, when he's forcefully expressed his "biblical" views condemning homosexuality as the work of the devil.

"My real concern is whether as an attorney for the Michigan Attorney General's Office, he can competently represent gay people in our state," Dubin said. "Perhaps that raises a legitimate question as to his competency to hold this job, rather than examining his right to speak his brand of hate."

The Detroit Free Press reports:

"Deborah Gordon, the attorney for U-M student Chris Armstrong, said Friday she has filed a complaint with the Michigan Attorney Grievance Commission against Shirvell, a Michigan assistant attorney general, on behalf of her client. The complaint alleges Shirvell harassed and defamed Armstrong during what Gordon describes as a six-month campaign 'of lies, dishonesty, heckling, hate speech and even job interference.' The commission could disbar Shirvell if it investigates. 'I could not stand by and let Mr. Shirvell continue his reckless, bullying behavior,' Armstrong said in a statement."

Armstrong added: "We just feel very strongly ... that you can't be a licensed attorney and an officer of the court and conduct yourself this way and essentially terrorize a college student."

While Armstrong has dropped his restraining order against Shirvell, the state's assistant attorney general is still not allowed to step foot on the the University of Michigan campus. Shirvell's attorney has threatened legal action if that ban lifted is not lifted as well.

Shirvell is still under voluntary leave from his position but is scheduled to return to his position next week.

Fired.

An assistant attorney general in Michigan is out of a job, fired after targeting an openly gay University of Michigan student leader online and in person -- then lying about his actions to investigators -- state Attorney General Mike Cox said Monday.

Andrew Shirvell "repeatedly violated office policies, engaged in borderline stalking behavior and inappropriately used state resources," Cox said.

According to Cox, Shirvell showed up at Armstrong's home three times -- including once at 1:30 a.m. Cox said that this early morning visit, especially, showed that Shirvell was intent on harassing Armstrong, not just exercising his right to free speech.

While Shirvell may not be charged criminally with stalking, Cox said that he behaved in a way that "was harassing, uninvited and showed a pattern that was, in the everyday sense, stalking." He cited numerous examples, including:

-- Calling the office of U.S. House Speaker Nancy Pelosi, where Armstrong worked, "in an attempt to slander Armstrong" and get him fired.

-- Trying to "out" Armstrong's friends -- some of whom were not gay -- as homosexual.

-- Harassing Armstrong's friends while out socializing in Ann Arbor, the home of the University of Michigan.

Cox had originally defended Shirvell in part because he believed his blog was being done when he wasn't at work. But he said Monday that Shirvell had, in fact, posted online "attacks" on Armstrong and called Pelosi's office while he was on the job as an assistant attorney general.

In his statement, Cox also said that Shirvell lied to investigators "on several occasions during his displinary hearing."

It seems we have come a long way from the 1980s when that was acceptable behavior if you were in love which is what I took Mr. Shirvell to be in. He clearly has an infatuation with the man just like Mr. Cusack had.

I hate that guy. I do wonder why he is so obsessed with the student. Maybe he's a disgruntled lover, or he tried to hook-up with that college student and got his ass denied.

Another explanation is that he really, really, really hates homosexuals.

To put it in perspective, everyone, at some point, has seen someone lose an argument on the internet. The loser promptly stalks their opponent through every thread, just waiting and biding their time to swoop in and get revenge. Some of them go that extra mile and post their personal data and facebook pics and so forth.

Some guy did this to me and started to call my house and harass my parents.

I realize it's funnier to imagine him a repressed homosexual (and he probably is), but don't discount the obsessive power of pure hatred.

Ceirtanly. However, in my world the scorned lover bit makes a lot more sense than just randomly hating someone for being gay and atheist. I'm not even suggesting it in a nelsonhaha sort of way, i just think his behaviour is more reasonable if its due to passion.

Except that makes no sense. I'm sure there are plenty of atheistic gays on they U of M campus yet Shirvell SPECIFICALLY chose to target only Armstrong. Shirvell is clearly showing signs of stalking behavior and desperately needs psychiatric attention.

While that's true, as my internet example stated--some people can fly into psychotic stalker rages at the flimsiest of reasons.

This isn't a bad thing for him, though, since he'll now be able to go on to make far more money through the White Male With A Grievance Media Circuit.

Quick Sidenote:

Am I the only one who remembers Anderson Cooper from Channel 1 news? or is my memory playing tricks on me? I'm pretty sure I remember him and Lisa Ling from Channel 1 News back in my junior high days.

Hell yeah. That's why I've always been a fan of his, even before he went to CNN. Other than the fact that Anderson and Lisa hosted Channel 1, the only thing I remember about Channel 1 is that it is where I heared about Kurt Cobain's suicide back in the eighth grade.

It's good that he's fired, but an embarassment that it took the AG so long to do it. AG is a total douchebag.

The fuck? He couldn't fire him until he had a valid reason to do so under the rules.
Are the ACLU also douchebags? "Jay Kaplan, a staff attorney for the American Civil Liberties Union, backed Cox's interpretation of civil service rules on Thursday."

It seemed like he targeted this kid specifically because he was the elected student assembly president of his precious Alma Mater. He's likely also a psychotic closeted homophobe but the spurned lover aspect is probably unlikely.
