Steam by numbers - full steam ahead [Fan-made infographic]

9% buy games of GFWL?

I find that to believe hard >.<
I think they confused Games for Windows Live with Games for Windows Marketplace. GFWM is the actual digital distribution service that comes with Windows Vista and 7, where users can purchase games that may or may not be GFWL-capable.

Those numbers come from here and they are based on unique visitors. They detail all the problems and things they could(n't) track. Suffice to say, I certainly am not taking those numbers at face value. They did way too much assuming to come up with those market shares.
The chart lists both Gamestop and Impulse, for some reason. The link they used for Gamestop seems to include digital downloads for the consoles as well, so the numbers may be pretty inaccurate.

Seeing Football Manager 2012 as the second most played game on that date was unexpected really, for worldwide figures anyway.
A pleasant surprise for me as a huge fan of the series.

94% of Steam users use Windows?

It's not surprising considering that until one and a half years ago it was the only OS they supported. And even now there are only 279 games for Mac and more than 1800 for PC.

They're independent, but not indie. :p

They are as indie as it gets. The term is not defined by size or what kind of games you make, just by ownership. If you're a privately held company you're indie. They might be even more indie (if there were such a thing) than the developers of Shank (Klei) cause they're also self-funded. So while Klei is an indie studio, their title Shank 2 is not an indie game. :)

This is the craziest thing I've read all day.

From what I found out, EA has the exclusive rights to distribute licensed video-games with Bundesliga teams and players in germany. Sounds weird considering the Pro Evolution Soccer games have german teams and players.

IIRC they have only some licenses for German teams from the Champion's League rights.

PES doesn't have the Bundesliga, only a couple teams (Bayern for example).

The mod community has to fix the game every year to include all licenses.

I doubt they have 250 anymore (2-3 year old number), Valve South (left 4 dead team) are after all making a game for Ubisoft.

You mean THQ.

GFWLM does not exist anymore, it's just Xbox.com now.

No they haven't! Some German clubs are not included although they play CL. But it's not a problem since FIFA has been the better game for several years now.

Retailers typically get around $7 or so per game

If you figure that $7 is royalty (I think that's the standard Xbox royalty) that means 28% (or less) of game revenue is eaten up before it hits store shelves, and that's without publisher (marketing, logistics) and other shit

Basically means... It costs the same to release on steam as it does to release in retail on a console(if you were to factor all copies sold) except money spent in logistics is never fully earned back

Some of these stats are misleading and show some bias. For example, the fact that he put the 40 million Steam accounts and 40 million Xbox Live accounts up against each other like that is kinda bunk. He's not explicitly saying that Steam's as big and is Live's equal but it's implied by directly comparing them like that. If you were to add up the 10 games being played right now on Steam, that number would be dwarfed by just the latest Call of Duty on Xbox. You could probably go even further.
