Hello, I was wondering if anyone knew where, besides valve themselves, I could download the files necessary to operate Steam. I am currently stationed in Iraq--B co 1-504 PIR 82ABN DIV--and our internet service is contracted out to a local Iraqi. As such we don't have a true ISP and my computer can't reach Valve's servers to download the necessary files to run Steam. I only have the installer, which won't install without some other files. Could anyone host the files for me or direct me to where I could find them? I just bought half-life2 and am dying to play. Thanks for any help.

PS: I only came here because Valve's support forums suck.

It's only the Steam.dll file. Hope that solves your problem :)

(EDIT) D'oh Armitage is right. I removed the file, it won't do any good.

Even with the Steam dll files, you still need to decrypt all the data. And if you can't contact Valve's servers, it's not going to work. Before you begin a bitchfest about not being able to play an offline game you bought in a store, check the minimum system requirements on the back of the box. You don't comply (that thing you're on, can't really be called an internet connection if you can't access everything)
 
A little googly work reveals that PeerGuardian2 might be blocking Steam from phoning home, so if you're using it you should disable it.

Who is the peer in this case? His field commander or the Iraqi ISP?

Haha...well shooting insurgents isn't as much fun as you think with processing wounded detainees, loading up dead ones, and filing sworn statements and all. But am I truly SOL as far as Half Life? I'm not computer literate so I don't know how to manipulate routers.
