Steam In-Home Streaming and Steam Link thread

I'm having an issue with Dishonored 2 streaming. On host PC it runs fine, very smooth. On Steam Link my framerate is really bad.. Using Powerline adapter that has given me no issues with any other games (everything else plays at 1080P60), any ideas? Graphics settings in Dishonored make no difference

I'm lost and need help setting up my Steam Link

I have a Steam Link on a wireless 5G connection to my router.
I have a PC (Windows 10) with my steam games wired to my router.
I have a Macbook with steam (but no games) on the 5G connection.

When both the PC and Macbook have In-Home streaming enabled in Steam, the Link can see the Macbook as a host computer, but not the PC.

The PC and Macbook can see each other through the Steam client.

The PC can ping the Steam Link with no dropped packets (using ping on the command line).

The IP addresses for the machines are ->
PC - 192.168.0.100
Steam Link - 192.168.0.101
Macbook - 192.168.0.103

I'm confused as hell at this. I don't see how the Macbook talk to both the PC and Link, but the PC can't talk to the link though it can talk to the Macbook.... Anyone have any suggestions on this?

Overall, how is the compatibility with the Dualshock 4 on the Steam Link? I bought one the other day but no Steam Controller, as I have Dualshock 4's and a WiiU Pro Controller lying about which I thought would work fine.

By default the steam link will treat the ds4 as an xinput device and will have excellent compatibility (just like a 360 controller.) There's also an option to have custom configurations with a ds4 like the steam controller can do.

Man, I snagged one of these with the $19.99 sale and it's kind of a game changer for me. The latency is excellent, the image quality is excellent, got a Dual Shock 4 paired with it wirelessly, wireless keyboard plugged in, etc. Played some Doom, even some WoW and it's damn near perfect. Wouldn't even know it's streaming. I've also been using it to stream Quarry from the Cinemax website using Chrome since they don't have any streaming apps on other platforms.

The only issue is that I have stereo speakers on my PC, but a 5.1 setup for the TV, but if I set the Steam Link to 5.1 it doesn't like the disconnect between the stereo on the PC, so I don't get sound in some stuff.

Got mine the other day and have logged like 20 hours of Dark Souls 3 with very few issues. I'll get weird hitches every hour and a half or so that last a few seconds but other than that it runs like a dream for almost everything I've tried. Watch Dogs 2 has some issues and actually crashed my client though haha.

But yeah at $20 this was a damn steal.

I'm having a lot of trouble running Fallout New Vegas with mods via the Steam Link. It works just fine on my PC but in the Link it's running at about 2fps. Sometimes it boots up and runs fine though and I can't figure out why. The Link just mirrors the monitor, right? Why would mods affect this?

Some games just don't work well. Rocket League is unplayable and N++ runs at like 5fps it feels. But overall, the link is great.

Been almost a week. Still can't get my PC to be found by the Link.

My PC can be streamed on any other device except the Link. The Link can stream any other device except my PC.

Both can ping each other.

This sucks.

Guys, does the microsoft wireless dongle connect and work with the steam link ? In the FAQ they mention "officiel windows 360 wireless pads", but will my standard 360 wireless pads, with the dongle, work on the link as it does on my PC? Thanks.

Probably. I say probably because most of the dongles in circulation, even the most official looking ones sold by reputable stores, are Chinese knock offs. Most of them still work too, but a few don't.

What's the experience with Link and powerline adapters?

Also anything I should do on the PC end to make the streaming experience optimal?

So I think my issue with New Vegas was related to the launcher. I had to modify the launcher for a mod that increased the memory size of NV. For some reason using the original launcher before launching with mods allows the game to run smoothly. No idea why.

I also noticed that running RivaTuner causes a slight judder every few seconds or so. Anyone else notice this?

Just a quick question before I press confirm sorry if it has already been covered in the thread (I have not read it yet!)

Can I use this to stream my Desktop to my TV, or is it just for games (steam big picture)?

You minimize big screen mode and your desktop will be there.

I've had a quick search so sorry if this has been answered. But I can't find bluetooth settings anywhere? I've got a DS4 to work wired, but i can't find how to pair it wireless. All the tutorials I've found have an older GUI with the settings but mines different now. Do i need a bluetooth dongle or does it have it built in? Thanks for any help.

No dongle needed. Go to settings, then Bluetooth. Hold share and ps-button on the DS4 until the light bar flashes. Select 'connect' on the steamlink if needed.

So far it's not too good for me. Rogue Squadron's graphics are super glitchy with pop ins and the controls don't work. Unreal Tournament 2004 has to be played in low resolution for the game to be smooth, Jedi Academy is okay so far. FnaF 2 not that good.

I'm kind of stumped right now...

Are you using a wired or wireless connection to your PC?

Are you using a wired or wireless connection to your PC?
Well...it's wired but it's also a powerline adapter. Ethernet port is downstairs and the Steam Link is upstairs. I knew that there would be some sacrifices there but I have the nagging feeling that the adapter isn't working at its peak. But that's probably just my house wires in general.

I was super excited about the Steam Link too.

Just wanted to post a tip here if anyone else is experiencing lag issues with the Steam Link - I was able to resolve mine by setting my wireless router to use a 5 GHz network. I am using a wireless connection to my desktop and the Steam Link, and this eliminated 99% of the lag I was experiencing.

I just got a steam link. Anyone else playing trails in the sky sc having problems with it? I'm getting a slow capture message and game is running at 15 fps. But this only happens on this game. I get full 60 fps on games like dragons dogma.

Anyone else's Steam controllers keep getting non-responsive if you have bluetooth headphones connected? I can hold the Steam button till it disconnects, then reconnect and it's fine, so it's not a huge deal, but it's alittle annoying.

I bet it'd be fine if I used the Steam controller dongle. But I like to keep that connected to my tablet.

I've been able to link up 3 DS4s this way, but was unable to connect a launch DS4. Also, one of the connected DS4s randomly disconnected when playing Overcooked. Has anyone else had issues with DS4s and any tips on how to resolve them?

Try changing the encoding method on the host.

I can't get sound to come out of games with steam link. The initial set up had sound but after that no audio comes from the TV. It's hooked up through HDMI.

The only problem I've had with the DS4 is using the new steam configuration with it, I couldnt play Binding of Issac with it, so I changed the setting back to where it recognizes it as a xinput controller or xbox controller.

My setup is this:
PC i72600 gtx 670 wired to Netgear Nighthawk
1 Steam Link setup in the living room, its wired to the router. I am able to run most non-heavy graphic games at 1080p60fps. Rocket League was unplayable set at 1080p60fps, changed it to 720p60fps and it played fine, even played a 2v2 match online no lag whatsoever. So far its played everything perfectly with minimal button lag that I've tried. Plays indie games (Shovel Knight, Shantea, Gonner, Bro Force, etc.) like a dream.

2nd Stream link is setup in the bedroom, it is hooked up via 5ghz wireless. I have this setup to 720p60fps only. Plays perfectly fine with a tiny bit extra button lag on certain games. I played Hitman on this and it played really well. Also all those little indie games of course ran like a dream.

I have both set to Balanced and Auto for bandwidth. I use a xbox one controller to boot each one up and then connect my DS4's to them. I have had no controller problems except for what I stated above.

I also added this fun project to Steam Link: Steam Link with Retroarch

Overall I am incredibly impressed with it. With the added Retroarch add on, this thing was well worth the $20.

Check your PCs volume of the Steam App itself. Chances are it is near muted and that is the cause of this.

Having an issue with Steam big picture running poorly while navigating after initializing the stream but once launching a game everything is smooth.

So my new Setup will have my PC within cord range of my new 4K tv. While my pc won't be able to run new games at 4K I might look at wrangling some old ones. But either way some of my more console style games at any resolution would be nice on the screen with a steam controller in hand.

What is the best solution here? Steamlink to a couple of metres away or just a long cord to the tv?

Also is there a good idiot proof steam controller website/forums/something? I looked at it ages ago and couldn't get it working well. I get it has teething problems but I'm not talking "it felt funny" I'm taking "wouldn't perform basic functions in some games"

Long cord to the TV is ideal.

Steam link is great for convenience, but compared to a simple hdmi cord it has many downsides. It'll have worse image quality, increased input lag and the occasional buggy game that won't work for some reason.

Worth noting that those wanting a higher end stream, the new Shield TV out this month now has official Steam Link support which should stop the NVidia streaming lockdown, support for 4k and HDR streaming and Google Assistant, with dots you can put in the house to basically use it as a Google Hub. It will also have native ports of UbiSoft games like For Honour and Watch Dogs 2, which is insane. It's $199.99

It really all depends on how good your house's wiring is.

I tried powerline but I would get huge lag spikes every 5 minutes or so - I'm guessing this is because my house is pretty old. I got a new router with a 5ghz 802.11ac band and it actually works a lot better, I haven't gotten any drops.

So YMMV. I know that's not the answer you want but it's the truth.

Just got this thing hooked up, tried a few games. Things were a bit funky until I tweaked my TV's settings (disabled all the junk, switched to PC input, etcetc). Took a bit to figure out how to get the Xbox One Controller S working via Bluetooth, but that's all set now.

I'm getting ~5ms latency with WiFi.. not too bad. I'm able to play Thumper easily, so I'm guessing it's not to big of an issue. Is that normal latency for "Balanced" setting via WiFi?

I'm pretty impressed with it. $20 too. Can't beat that.

Any way to get audio over the controller? Has anyone figured a way to use the Xbox Controller Dongle yet? I know that allows for audio.

The Verge states that it allows for 4k HDR Steam streaming... Is this true!? That's insane if it is. I can't even imagine gigabit ethernet having enough bandwidth for lagfree 4k/hdr gaming streaming.

Is 1080p the max resolution? I got mine last week but haven't set it up yet. Was hoping to push 4K to my new 65" TV without having to disconnect the PC, drag it upstairs and connect it to the TV.

If anyone figures out a reliable way to get UWP apps working on Steam Link let me know.

I tried UWPHook's Streaming Mode but it looks like recent Win10 patches broke it and even then it sounds like the only way to get controllers working on UWP games was by using VirtualHere which apparently no longer works with the recent In Home Streaming update.

God, I hate UWP so much.

I don't even get a picture with UWP. Just a black screen with nothing happening. I gave up on it in the end.

The link allows me to play world of warships on my big screen with a blue tooth mouse and keyboard on my comfy couch. Well worth the 30 some euro's! Wired everything up and put TV in game mode and its all set. Awesome device.
