It's Official: Valve Releasing Steam, Source Engine For Linux!

Published on May 12, 2010
Written by Michael Larabel

Valve Corporation has today rolled out their Steam Mac OS X client to the general public and confirmed something we have been reporting for two years: the Steam content delivery platform and Source Engine are coming to Linux. This news is coming days after we discovered proof in Steam's Mac OS X Client of Linux support and subsequently found more Linux references and even the unreleased Steam Linux client. The day has finally come and Linux gamers around the world have a reason to rejoice, as this is the biggest news for the Linux gaming community that sees very few tier-one titles [...]

Valve is a good ruler of computer gaming. Not only are they the saviors of PC gaming, but they are reviving Mac gaming and Linux gaming as well!

So does that mean the PS3's with Linux could theoretically play those games on their PS3?

Probably not much more than PopCap-type games since there's no real GPU access in OtherOS. Plus you've only got 256MB of system RAM which isn't going to allow for much.

Cool to see Linux is finally getting some gaming support. Although this announcement was already spoiled in the code of the the OSX client.

The fact that this even existed in the first place should have clued us in.

This is interesting hopefully more developers will do the work to get their games running on Linux too. Windows really is a bloated heap of shit and I hate logging into it to play games.

I think this did clue many of us in. I mean they switched to webkit and ported source to open gl. No reason not to do a Linux client.

This is epic FAIL

I PAY MY GAMES TO STEAM!!

Putting the Linux logo in the Windows client is equivalent to putting the pictures of Buddha in the Vatican in Rome.

you create real religious war between Windows users and Linux users.
I *just* switched to Ubuntu a couple of weeks ago. Great news.

Ok thanks. I don't know what he said.

There are architectural differences between your PC and your PS3 that have to be specifically coded for, which won't be specifically coded for.

Yes! OMG! Yes please!

If this happens, Linux will become my primary OS at home. As long as Valve gets Steam to work in Fedora and Ubuntu, I'll be a happy camper.

PS3 and last generation Macs use(d) PowerPC processors. Steam for Mac is supported only in more recent generation Intel based Macs. So Steam for Linux will expectedly be supported only in Intel/AMD Linux Pcs.

What a coincidence - Ubuntu just released version 10 is a pretty big improvement in UI and usability.

Really?

I have not noticed.

Aside from the software center, feels the same to me.

Jesus Valve, you're really going to bring your games to every but platform the PS3. What did I do to deserve this?
I'll start worrying when they announce Episode 3.

Gaming has always forced this setup on me, I'm used to it.

That is my exact setup as well.

I dream of the day when OpenGL gets its act together and I can ditch Windows (not because I have anything against it, but I like linux better).

I only have a few PC games (Sim City 4 which works in Wine) but I've been usually linux pretty much exclusively since 2008.
It'll be good to have some options and I'd definitely buy stuff that caught my fancy.

I'll really be interested to see how the games run per distro and compared to OSX despite all being Open GL. I think it'll be funny if something like Ubuntu 10.04 runs say TF2 better than OSX. Purely because of the meltdowns and fanboy arguments and posturing that would ensue :lol :lol :lol .
