Steam Machines to launch during GDC 2015, Controller design finalized, SteamOS ready

Update:

Gamespot has been told by the CEO of Origin PC that the controller is going into production:

"At GDC, they're going to have more information," Wasielewski said. "And we'll be there. That's the official stuff we can say. They came out with the controller, then they got some user feedback, and they had to revamp it; they got some more user feedback and had to revamp it again. So they went through that like three or four times. And now their controller is finalized. So now they're going to production and at GDC is when they're going to announce more stuff."

Also, the CEO believes that the term, Steam Machines, is dead since they are called Living Room PCs and that those have been around forever.

However, despite silence from Valve over the recent months, it has been confirmed by multiple sources that Steam Machines will have an official launch at GDC (the Game Developers Conference) in early March of 2015. The Steam Controller design has been finalized, and Steam OS is apparently ready to come out of beta. Multiple PC boutique builders are already ready to launch a variety of products designed from the ground up as Steam Machines.

I can't wait to see how the controller's final design looks.

Not surprised that the OS is ready, Steam on Linux runs great (on Nvidia). Will be interested to see how well the controller integrates with games and what it uses for wireless so I can plug one into my existing machines.

Well at least we finally have news, interested in the controller but I doubt it'll take me away from my Xbone one.

I'm honestly surprised Steam Machines is still a thing. Seems like the ship sailed a while ago.

Controller could still be interesting though.

The PS4 and XBO pads make it impossible for me to go back to this. It's a huge regression compared to the newer gamepads.

I can't wait to get my hands on the steam controller because I think gamepads have been in a rut for a while. There is refinement but no real innovation.

i havent been following this steam machine stuff but...i can put steamos onto my htpc and itll essentially be a "steam machine" right?

Why? That would solve absolutely none of their design goals and be the very definition of failure.

Because it started out as this crazy unique design with a touchscreen in the center and neat button placement, and then every revision has gotten further and further into bog standard territory. The latest revision even has a Thumbstick instead of a D-Pad!

Why/! Just buy an Xbox 360 controller if that's the case. The Steam controller has a totally different aim that cannot be achieved by that design.

I'm sorry I have to explain this, I was trying to be sad and sarcastic since I'm depressed at how normal the Steam controller looks now.

I think not providing a flagship or baseline steam machine isn't a great idea as we've already seen a huge range in specs and price.

Well, unless the Alienware model is supposed to be it.

Do you think the Rift will help sell Steam Machines to the mainstream? I mean it seems like it would be a great way to get the less tech savvy consumers into it.

Does it still have buttons in the back?

Edit: I assume it is the "LG" and "RG" buttons.

Edit 2: I am glad they removed the touchscreen if it brings down cost. I hope this thing isn't 65$.

The controller seemed no where near ready last I heard.. but then again.. last I heard was quite some time ago.

I'd rather Steam just work on something that does Windows 8.1 like Alienware did with the Alpha.. I have no wanting to run Linux on one of these machines.

I'd rather just stick with what works for everything.

Yes, the LG and RG buttons. That's the one improvement I'm still looking forward too. I'm cautiously optimistic about the touchpads at this point, but everything I've heard make them seem like anything but the revolution they seemed to be.

You'll be able to put Windows on any "Steam machine" and have it launch into Big Picture.

This is going to be too niche to take off isn't it :(

Regardless I will definitely own one. This is kinda like a nintendo thing, in that the hardware opens gameplay possibilities. So if nothing else Valve might release a game that only makes sense on this hardware, which could be a big reason for it existing. Dunno. Or they're just fleshing out the PC-in-living-room thing early and will let this simmer until it falls into place somewhere in the future

Still don't see what market this serves.

The "I want to walk into a store/press a button online to buy a single box that just works" market. I'm skeptical that Valve can actually make such a box, but I see a lot of people (Mostly outside of GAF) who want to play some PC games, but just don't know how or are unwilling to go through the learning process. All that being said if they don't get enough games running on Linux then this won't solve that problem.

I was really interested in what the Steam Controller could bring to the table back when they announced it, but right now I'm feeling pretty skeptical. The analog stick was a big downer for sure.

I liked this design :(

The steam controller design is one of the very worst controller designs I've ever seen..and that includes the ps3 boomerang. Basically flipped a Xbox controller back to front and lose the buttons. Doesn't look comfortable as well.

And i still don't understand why I would get a steam machine over building my own.

....what? I have a PS4 and I still think the 360 pad is excellent outside of the d-pad. Not really sure how it's a "regression." The 360 pad is super comfortable and I play almost everything on PC with it outside of FPSes.

As long as the controller still has the two touch pads, it can still serve it's intended purpose.

Man, I want one so bad. Announce a date already!

I just hope the touch pads work well as a mouse. I really would love to have a viable option to play strategy games on my couch.

The learning curve on this might be the largest learning curve for a controller
I hope it is more natural than it looks assuming it looks remotely similar to that

Crossing my fingers they'll launch a game or two by surprise along with this. I want to love Valve again.
