[Steam Sale 2015] Indie-pendent Hidden Gem Recommendations

Haven't played it myself, but I enjoyed the Giant Bomb Quick Look. Looks like the kind of game that you could have fun with for a bit, but I don't know about longevity.
Steam comments say a few hours for the current episode
I've put 2 hours in and haven't beaten the hub level or the avaliable cabin level. There are TONS of little items that you find by exploring and interacting with the world. I'll probably beat it on my 4th or 5th hour if I had to guess but then there are three more levels coming in the future.
The first level took me about two hours to beat. To find all the secrets and beat the sewer level in hub in took me about an hour. There are three more coming that may be harder. There is also Lake of the Dead mode with is kind of like an endless zombie attack mode.
I beat it at 6 hours, with only 6 achievements

HOLY FUCK....there's just TOO MANY GAMES.....I can't PLAY THEM ALL PEOPLE!!!!

I added like 6-7 games to my wishlist from that list,

Only played this for a little bit, and I'm already loving it. If you're tired of the same old crafting/building/survival games, this might be the game that gets you interested again. The alien ocean is a vastly more engaging and interesting setting than a forest or island or wasteland.

Subnautica - $17.99 (10% off)

this looks AMAZING....so tempted to buy it, but gonna wait till the 21st to see if it gets a deeper discount?

XenoRaptor - $7.49 (50% off)

A fast paced bullet hell shooter, where you face rocket chainsaws and demonic hordes as a weaponized cyberdragon. Lay waste to your enemies with an extremely customizable loadout, from sawblade scatter shot and teleporting attack bears to tractor beams and mind controlling lasers, across a solo campaign, co op, and competitive multiplayer

From the dev's comments, I doubt it'll be getting a bigger discount this sale
Subnautica is a game that is still very much in development, and we don't need to bring in a large influx of players right now. When the sale price is lowered by a large margin, it tends to attract a group of people who are less willing and dedicated to giving the game a real chance.
We just want to avoid any perception that the game itself is of lesser value then it actually is due to a really cheap price tag, and if that means that we lose sales during this Steam sale, then so be it.

So many great games on sale. Here are a few worth looking into:

Out There Somewhere - $0.19 (-96%)

http://store.steampowered.com/app/263980/?snr=1_7_7_230_150_12

Very tiny but interesting platformer, I enjoyed how it managed to subvert a lot of traditional video game trappings and continually surprise me. It's about an hour long and might not leave much of an impression after you've beaten it, but for less than a quarter that seems more than fair.

Caster - $0.20 (-93%)

http://store.steampowered.com/app/29800/?snr=1_7_7_230_150_13

This game is ridiculously dumb, but in a way that just barely holds it together enough that it comes out pretty entertaining. Recommended if you're interested in spending an hour or two playing an outrageously overpowered, would-be Megaman who doesn't give a flip if the game is basically broken around him because it's just a lot of fun.

Love - $1.04 (-65%)

http://store.steampowered.com/app/269270/?snr=1_7_7_230_150_18

Cool minimalistic speedrunning platformer. It's super compact and can be run through in under 20m, but the level designs are generally excellent and varied enough that I found it entertaining a few times over.

VVVVVV - $1.24 (75%)
ss_bf8d62a25be95730600ce4789213971c5b763111.600x338.jpg

http://store.steampowered.com/app/70300/?snr=1_7_7_230_150_19

Everyone has likely already played this, but if not it's one of the most unique takes on a platformer I've played in years. The soundtrack is also mindblowingly good and worth playing the game for alone.

Rocketbirds - $1.99 (-80%)
ss_1d26c02c645f4a8764f7f7cf23c903af29963984.600x338.jpg

http://store.steampowered.com/app/215510/?snr=1_7_7_230_150_26

Crass and violent in the best way. It's not the best sidescrolling shooter you'll ever play, but it has more style than most.

Bleed - $1.99 (-60%)
ss_afe34ad1938776e21517101d93b4b4967195fbd3.600x338.jpg

http://store.steampowered.com/app/239800/?snr=1_7_7_230_150_26

Awesome, awesome 2D hyperfast shooter. Great boss design and pacing, it's over before you realize it but brilliant the whole way through.

Waking Mars - $1.99 (-80%)
ss_193562678bb4bfa0e5857e3dd4e3fadcf92d2dab.600x338.jpg

http://store.steampowered.com/app/227200/?snr=1_7_7_230_150_26

Somewhere between a gardening game and a metroidvania. The atmosphere it astounding and there's an intriguing narrative if you take the time to find it.

Cook, Serve, Delicious! - $2.49 (-75%)
ss_c083332ea1aa341a47b8f467b04a95ba15c560fd.600x338.jpg

The only time working as a frycook is actually crazy fun! CSD is basically the logical progression of games like Cooking Mama and has way more depth than you'd initially expect.

Lots more stuff to recommend, but I'll do that in another post when I have more time to go through this insane list of sales.

A gem that I've seen no one talk about. I was almost tempted to put together a topic on this, it's really a shame this game isn't more well known.

Magicmaker - $4.99 (-50%)

ss_42d985f53c0be592656a52c6e2c2c5fb0b8ce934.600x338.jpg

http://store.steampowered.com/app/319250/

A single player game about tinkering, experimenting and breaking systems, where you put together spell components to form essentially infinite numbers of unique spells. It has a satisfying progression cycle like good diablo clones. You'll start off casting fireballs then end the game with homing branching armor penetrating laser fists that spawn minions. It's nothing like Magicka and is more akin to a deck building game crossed with a platformer. There was just a substantial free NG+ that ultimately doubles the number of spell components you can use. Biggest flaw is that the main arc is short and easy, but I highly recommend the challenge rooms and the handicap missions. It's also occasionally funny. Occasionally.

That game had a really cool magic system, but the level design felt incredibly boring at first. Still worth recommending for the mechanics though.

Is there a good game like Marble Blast Ultra (Xbox Live Arcade, years ago) on Steam?

Idk if you're aware of it, but Marble Blast Ultra got unoficially ported to PC a while back. It looks and runs great. The publisher went bankrupt, and the developer doesn't have rights to the IP anymore, so it's basically abandonware.

How did you know this in advance? I'm definitely buying it, but curious if they show what can get unlocked anywhere..

The things unlocked for the next day are shown in the steam monster game reward page. You can't see what's locked, but once the goal is reached, you see what game is going to be discounted (but not the amount either).

Pillars of eternity - $33.74 (25% off)

A modern CRPG developed by Obsidian. While it has many of the features of older games, it still feels fresh because how they approached the classes, races and status.

Castle In The Darkness - $4.97(17% off)
AB4A09B8F776E6680A03B2F42304EF0B1B48BB45

http://store.steampowered.com/app/262960/

A metroidvania heavely inspired by the 8bit generation. The controls are simple and responsive, there are lots of secrets to be found and some extra modes to be unlocked.

Boson X - $1.49 (50% off)
ss_d0e7c31abbfa0b87058766a93e8a8791ef1c353c.1920x1080.jpg

It's a endless runner set inside a particle collider. As you progress the levels become harder and new elements are introduced.

Crystal Story II - $1.49 (50% off)
ss_fed1a4dadcfcd2150e59f6b1aedcdfcd11888085.1920x1080.jpg

A turn based RPG with your typical story. The graphics are very simple but charming and there are a wide range of minigames in the game.

My first pickup:

ULTRAWORLD - $6.69 (33% off)

Visit a scenic, abstract landscape of bleeding technicolor wonder, armed with a camera, curiosity, and freedom. Explore a vibrant, first-person world where the landscape itself is a living painting and every view is worthy of hanging on your walls!

I've been meaning to grab it since release, and finally got around to it. I'm always hesitant on exploratory walking sims, but I really enjoyed it. It's a 2 hour, peaceful, thought-provoking journey into a creative vibrant world, with a catchy electronic soundtrack, and a heavy dose of existentialism. It's Tearaway meets Fract OSC. It also helps that it reminds me of the agnostic pontifications of Rush's Neil Peart, and places creativity on a pedestal.

You also unlock the ability to change the way the world looks via filters, so my F12 button got more action then its seen in a while.

Steam has some kind of cookie clicker style mini game going now. If certain score thresholds are hit, deals get unlocked the next day. Creeper World was in yesterdays rewards.

Yeah, I've been AFK on that game, so I knew about it... i just didn't realize you could see the games that got unlocked in advance (or hints to them, at least). I see it now. Pretty cool... saved me a bit on creeper.

wow thanks a lot for this thread! a lot of great infos, I added a lot of games to my cart or wishlist I would have missed (or had forgotten)!

Highlands - $8.98 (34% off)

This is a surprise, I went into the game totally blind only knowing it was a turn based game that was funded via Kickstart. The first thing that drew my attention was the game's art, be it the well done hand drawn environment and the charismatic characters and this helps making each level feel unique. Another good point are the musics and sound in the game, both are great and help setting the right mood to your play session.

Totally missed this thread.

Anyway, good to see Freedom Planet as a recommended title. I played it recently, and it is so amazing. I honestly put it up there on the same level as Shovel Knight (too bad Freedom Planet didn't get the same recognition as that), except FP has a lot more content.

A lot of good stuff here! Admittedly I have a large junk of the suggested titles, but I am looking on picking up a few of these if the price is right. My general rule going forward (after last year's sale) is to just wait for humble bundles because last year I bought 4 games that were immediately listed on the humble bundle the following week, but here are definitely some titles that I am considering picking up by the end of this sale:

Cities: Skyline
Divinity Original Sin
Ephemerid
Gemini Rue
minimetro
Shovel Knight (probably going to hold out for a humble bundle)
sokobond
Spacechem
strike suite zero
night of the rabbit

Once again Toma doing work. Each Summer sale becomes less exciting as I realize I already own everything, but these threads never fail to uncover some hidden gems.

Uh! Okay, thank you!

Thanks for all the other recommendations. I might get to update the OP tonight again. I was too tired yesterday to do anything productive.

Also, there are some games here that are still widely ignored. Cubesis has like 20 steam reviews and comes personally recommended from me as an incredibly lovely and original god sim puzzle game.

Cheers Toma - added that to my last sale day or specials spreadsheet!!!

God, Original War... I played it back in the day and I remember it fondly.

I just bought it, let's see if it holds up well!

At this point I'm gonna say Freedom Planet is the single best indie platformer I've ever played. Top quality from start to finish and way more then just the straight Sonic clone it gets branded as.

Play this game people, especially if you have any affinity for action platformers. Even if you don't like the cutscenes you can play in classic mode so that's no excuse.

You should replace Half Minute Hero: Super Mega Neo Climax Ultimate Boy with the Half Minute Hero Bundle, which is the original game and its sequel, Half Minute Hero: The Second Coming at the same price as the original game. Currently only $2.49 for the bundle and both of them are really good and frantic spoofs of JRPGs.

I found the pacing to be all over the place in Freedom Planet. I think I also went in to it with the wrong expectations. People branded it as a Sonic clone so that's what I expected and that's what I wanted. That's not what it is. At all. Honestly it didn't feel like Sonic at all to me. I think if people jst didn't hype it asbeing like Sonic the way they did I might not have been so disappointed with it. But even then the pacing issues would still be there.
