Steam updating security on games?

Wolfenstein TOB just decided it's a good time to download 3.2 GB...

Surely it is not just a coincidence that TOB is just updating now...? I wonder what Steam is doing.

File system changes, maybe? I'm lost.

Oh.

This didn't start until I updated to the new beta client.

Wow, round 1 was all 0 byte. Round 2 is big updated. 100MB + for 240 games. Glad I never get near my comcast data cap.

I think this happened: The first update removed a bunch of the residual prerequisite files that hang around in your game folders, and the second update redownloaded them.

Happened on standard clients as well.

Same here, except it's more like 15 games because I don't have a big harddrive and don't have a lot installed.

I have 3000 games installed.
I'm fucked.

After throwing a bunch of extra hdds into my system this fall, i installed over 900 games. I'm frightened to open steam.

I am so envious of you two to have the time and money to install 900/3000 games. :p

Probably some general Steam update. They're not actually downloading anything. If you force them up in the queue they'll download 0 bytes.

Not true for me at least, they all show 0 bytes but then start to download anywhere from 50ish to a couple hundred megabytes.
Same here, Steam wants me to re-download 14.4 GB of Lords of Shadow.

damn, I don't have one larger than 379 mB, and the smallest one I had was 9.8 mB

It's updating all my installed games again, though this time it seems to actually be downloading files. Smallest was 13.8 MB (Disgaea PC), largest so far was ~500MB (Danganronpa).

It looks like it's the DirectX redistributables that have been deleted and redownloaded.

That's kind of weird. Why would Steam care about a DirectX redistributable package from 2010? But the filesizes match and the last modified date is today, so it has to be that.

Any possibility of security flaws or vulnerabilities from the out-dated redistributables? Seems kinda weird otherwise.

This is probably paranoid of me but I'm copying my darksouls 3 save as a backup. I read that the game doesn't currently do cloud saves and I would hate for a hiccup to force me to start over.

located at C:\Users\Your-username\AppData\Roaming\DarkSoulsIII\ if anyone wishes to share my paranoia.

After the initial 18 0kb updates, all of those got new updates, and range from 15MB to 300.
Just great.

I don't think that updates delete things from folders like these.
Hell, even uninstalling a game doesn't delete the save(I think).

Gamesavemanager does that too.

Same thing happened to me. Thank god I delete the local files of any games I'm not actively playing so I only had 5 or so games need downloads, but it was really weird.

Here I am thinking to myself "I'm pretty sure Risky's Revenge and GG2 Overture aren't getting anymore patches."

Yep, I'm getting the same thing. First it downloaded quick small updates for all my installed games, then it scheduled larger updates of between 10-300MB each.

Yup, first I got a 0 byte update which must of deleted everything from _CommonRedist and now I got various sized updates downloading things into _CommonRedist.

Seems like it's nothing to worry about but very strange this happened. And as usual, no information from Valve as to why.

I think I'm more surprised by how many games some of you keep installed at one time.

I keep it below 5 as a rule.

Not even sure how many games it was before I cleared it, but it had just over 12GB of updates that came with it. Many were 0 bytes though.

You have to realize you're the outlier here right, and shouldn't be surprised. I'd wager the average digital gamer on even Nintendo platforms has more than 5 games installed at once.

Half-Life 3, obviously. They are hiding each part of the game within the files for other games. So in order to play it you gotta buy all the games on steam and then match the puzzle pieces.

Hmm. I wonder if this is happening only on Windows clients, or Mac/Linux as well?

Quite a scary thing to wake up from a nap to, so many random downloads for me since I have at least 100 games installed. Hope my saves don't mess up.

I as well am getting the updates.

Also, note the font on the Steam homepage has been changed and wishlists aren't working.
