Steel Battalion: Heavy Armor - GDC 2012 Screens

So this is what we've come to. Steel Battalion is one of the hardest of hardcore games, and now you have motion controls to....bump fists and catch apples.

To those saying it's better than hitting a button to do those...it's better to not even have those parts be interactive!

I still want to believe that Kinect could be used in a substantive way in other parts of the game. My hopes aren't high, but it's not impossible...

This game looks fucking awesome. I will get a Kinect for this. By June 2012, I expect a Kinect price cut, so this will make it well worth it for me.

Patrick talks about it in the beginning of this.

I'm anticipating it, along with Crimson Dragon. Japanese devs have a good track record with the Kinect oddly enough. SB seems to be using Kinect in a way I find interesting. It isn't removing complexity to fit a poor controlling device. I like the look of it actually, at least in the cockpits.

One thing of note is that the original's famous/infamous and awesome death penalty is gone. It has been replaced by some sort of checkpoint system which requires you to hit a self-destruct button.

Is this called Steel Battalion in Japan?

I'd love to see these sort of posts get you banned.

I'm a sucker for strategic/slow paced mech games so I'm looking forward to this. I don't see Kinect adding much to the experience but I am interested in what it is bringing to the game, an emphasis on the story of your team and how you interact with them.

Hope it ends up being good. Gives me a Gungriffon vibe and I loved the PS2 one.

Is the sub 10 FPS in that vid the encoding or is the game a mess?

Watch it on Gamersyde, the frame rate is fine and the game looks good, even if the screens don't.

What a great and valuable contribution to this thread!

Would you say it's as great and valuable as that gif?

Fist bump? Catch the apple? Do all Kinect games have to have silly gameplay segments?

I don't mind the interactions per se, but it would be much preferable if developers had enough confidence to leave on-screen instructions out in such situations, it looks really forced this way. But maybe it's just a tutorial mission or something.

I'm hoping this is the game that finally convinces the believers that Kinect is mostly nonsense.

I say this as an embarrassed Kinect owner. :/

Obviously that particular gif is far from as fascist and morally reprehensible as the poster wishing for the ban of anyone posting a harmless and thread-related gif.

What about that gif is thread-related?

It's about as thread-related as posting the Ravi Drums gif in a thread about Xenoblade.

It's not ban-worthy, but it's obviously nothing but trolling. I just find it funny that you would attack the person - sorry, fascist - calling out the troll, and not the troll himself.

Yes, a thread about a Kinect game having a bro-fist sequence is related to an animated gif of two players high-fiving (akin to brofisting) over a Kinect game.

Attack? You're already projecting something unto my posts that I'm surely not intending.

But to clarify on what you find funny: I simply find the freedom to post animated gif's preferable to someone who wishes for the poster in question to be banned from participating in this forum. It's not that I condone drive-by trolling, but wishing for people to be banned for something as trivial as a gif is something I cannot relate to at all, considering the context of the thread and the usual quality of forum posts.

I don't wish for people to get banned because of trolling for laughs either, we all do it from time to time, but if you're a regular in Kinect threads then you surely understand that mujun's reaction wasn't provoked by that single gif, it was provoked by the fact that a Kinect thread can hardly go by without a bunch of them being posted and the subject of the thread getting trashed and ridiculed (granted, the situation has gotten much better recently, with more people having warmed up to the device). Such posts don't bother me anymore, personally, I've gotten used to just glancing over them and taking advantage of the swell ignore list feature.

I don't know what to say to the bit about the usual quality of forum posts, however. In my experience there's no such thing as "the usual quality", it varies considerably; there's a lot of great stuff regularly posted on GAF, but also a lot of crap.

Only watched the first half, but DAMN! This is the kind of mech experience I want. Responsive Kinect gesture control (no hold 'n hover hand to confirm bullshit), sitting play (required if you want to stay inside the mech), controller play, some nice-looking, challenging gameplay with a good sense of scale. Probably the first (and, hopefully, not the last) real meaty core game requiring Kinect.

This makes me so, so, sad.

The first steel battalion and its online component were the best gaming experiences i've ever had. It was awesome and made you feel like a motherfucking BOSS.

This looks like fucking shit, and full of stupid kinect-i-fied interaction.

No fucking thanks.

I am exited too, the Kinect part has my full interest, seems very unique and immersive

One of the major problems with Kinect is calibration, i have noticed reviews of games giving totally different impressions probably based on how Kinect was calibrated and used

One part of the game is played with pad normally though, it is not Kinect only

Listening to the GB podcast, their impressions have me hyped, sounds amazing.

Though it seemed like they enjoyed it due to how over-the-top crazy the developers went with motion controls just for the sake of it (fist bumping, dragging people, standing up etc). As a fan of the original I wasn't too enthused.

she/he is just posting a gif, relax

He's trolling. I'm saying that I wish trolling with gifs wasn't allowed. Sorry, I don't get your perspective on the situation at all.

Guess what, a bunch of stuff is banned for this exact reason. Stuff that leads to threads getting derailed and out of hand is banned, memes, chartz, etc. Stuff that detracts from good discussion. Spamming gifs (be it in a Kinect thread, NPD thread, Vita thread, whatever) often leads to threads going to crap. Also as Remember Citadel mentioned this is hardly the first time it's been done in a Kinect thread.

ESRB has rated the game

Rating description has some dialogue from the game. Clearly not a kiddie Kinect game.

In this action game, set during an apocalyptic future, players assume the role of a war veteran tasked with regaining U.S. territory from hostile forces. Players pilot a “vertical tank”—armed with machine guns and explosive rounds—as they attempt to complete mission objectives and battle enemy soldiers. Combat sequences are executed from a first-person perspective; realistic gunfire and frantic screaming can be heard throughout. Wounded enemies emit blood splashes, and some soldiers are depicted close-up with dismembered limbs. The game contains several depictions of blood and gore—characters getting decapitate, bodies severed in half; a couple of sequences require players to cut off a corpse's limb or hold a soldier's intestines in place. Cutscenes contain more intense violence: a man using a pistol to commit suicide; a man's family getting executed in front of him. Soldiers' conversations occasionally reference sexual material (e.g., “'m gonna be up to my ears in p*ssy, man,” “I think that moaning is giving me a hard-*n down here,” “Is Sarge pitching a tent?”). Language such as “f**k,” “sh*t,” and “a*shole” can be heard in the dialogue.
