Stephen Colbert will replace David Letterman on The Late Show

I will miss the Colbert Report and his persona dearly, but he's such an immense comedic talent and I'm happy for him.

Can't wait to see him pretending to laugh and be interested in what brain dead Hollywood actors and reality show stars have to say

But it's hard to say no that gigantic $$$ cbs offered him

I wanna know how people will react to actual Stephen Colbert and not the "Stephen Colbert" he portrayed for so many years.

I think there will be a large initial backlash. People will think CBS made him change or something.

I don't understand how people think he will bring his character onto Late Night. It's a different show. The Stephen Colbert character served its purpose on the Report as a satirical pundit.

I can't believe that anyone would think even for a second that he wouldn't drop the character. I know, you love the character, we all do, but there's no way in the world that would carry over to the Late Show as the freakin' host.

I hope he does something truly epic to write the character off of Colbert Report though. Maybe not kill him off, let him maybe make appearances on Late Show, something like that. Or heck, kill him off in an amazing way if he'll be done with it for good. Whatever he does, it should be fantastic.

CBS does have Ferguson though. Aside from curbing the F-bombs a bit I don't much problems for Colbert.

In many ways it's a miracle that CBS lets Ferguson basically do what he wants. Really gives me faith that they won't constrain Colbert too much.

I can't believe everyone seems to know what he is going to do despite the news just coming out.

Colbert is a brilliant interviewer who makes many guests say that his show is the most challenging to be on. The Colbert Report is already a short jump from a late night variety show as it is.

He'll be fine.

Fergie is on at a late enough hour to have that breathing room. The whole "I hate this job and Cbs ain't paying me shit for it and for some reason still have me on air" doesn't work with the early time slot

I just want to add my two cents to say that my mind is fucking blown. I'll read more about it later, looking forward to tonight's report.

Wow, I didn't think they'd go with him. I'm going to miss The Report, damn.

I hope The Daily Show goes to an hour in length. I don't like the fragmented interviews where the rest is online only.

So will Jon Stewart get an hour on CC?

I would be okay with this. I always thought both Stewart and Colbert deserved much much more than 22 min or wtvr it is. They should give Stewart the full hour until at least through the end of the next presidential election. Afterwards they should give someone else those 30min. Probably Oliver.

Whoa, that is quite a shakeup. I love Colbert and it will be great to see what he does with an hour long program. I wonder what will happen to Colbert's CC slot. I'd guess John Oliver, but I believe he's getting a show on HBO.

I doubt the persona he'll craft for Late Night on CBS will be all that different from his current show, just minus the deliberate political bent and conservative parody. Colbert Report isn't end-to-end political satire all the time anyway; there are plenty of segments in his show that don't really rely on that so they offer decent insight of what to expect from him, I'd think. Anyone who regularly watched the Colbert Report probably isn't going to be too surprised by how he handles Late Night. IMO.

I'm hoping Colbert brings higher ratings than Letterman and they'll allow him to have that freedom. Basically a lot of Colbert Report's viewership is gonna transfer over.

At least we know they can't move @midnight up, because it would just sound weird for @1130.

Makes you uncomfortable?

calling out late night for a lack of diversity is more than okay, it's just always boring to see a joke run into the ground. it's probably no different than any other entertainment news story, but normally I never bother following the reactions as they're going on.

Mmm, this sounds awesome to me. Maybe he becomes a log cabin Republican and takes it literally, moving to the middle of nowhere to live in a log cabin with other Jesus loving Republican men.

Not sure how to feel about this. I love the Colbert Report and he seems to have a lot of freedom at Comedy Central.

The Late Show is going to be amazing now though. Will watch.

This is terrible news. I will miss The Colbert Report when it goes in 2015. I will have to check it out when he makes the switch to The Late Show. As others have said I hope they give The Daily Show an hour now. As I always thought it felt too cramped with just the 22 minutes or what ever it has now.

It really is. Half of his interviews go to the web and many of the middle segments are cut too short, especially when they aren't reports from correspondents. 40-45 minutes would be incredible.

So I wonder who could take over for Colbert on the Comedy Central?

It's a shame John Oliver went to HBO.

Current Daily Show correspondents/contributors:

Samantha Bee
Jordan Klepper
Al Madrigal
Aasif Mandvi
Jessica Williams
Lewis Black
John Hodgman
Kristen Schaal
Larry Wilmore

His annual salary is $25 million and has a net worth of $80 million. I'm sure he'll be fine.

I'm not sure why people think he'd really want to be on air for an hour each day, five days a week rather than have a 1/2 hour, four days a week?

am I late on this?

WSJ said:
CBS said in a news release that it had signed a five-year agreement with Mr. Colbert to take over its flagship show when Mr. Letterman retires next year.

Mr. Colbert, 49 years old, will retire the character he plays on his Comedy Central show—a sendup of Republican talk-show hosts—and will be himself as the host of the CBS show, the company said.

Further details, such as the show's producers and location, will be announced at a later date.

Not really a joke when it's 100% true
