Stephen Colbert will replace David Letterman on The Late Show

Lame. Colbert Report is really good and totally unique on TV. There are at least five late-nite monologue then desk bit then interview shows, but The Report is the only thing like it. I'd rather keep The Report and have someone else step into Letterman's shoes, because no one's stepping into Colbert's shoes, that's for sure.

I'll reserve judgment, but at first glance I don't like it. Even though the Colbert Report was entertainment, he was at least doing something to make the country a better place and help raise awareness of how messed up things are. And he's giving that up to talk to celebs? Maybe they'll let him bring his schtick and parts of his mission statement with him, but I've got doubts.

Anyone thinking negative thoughts on this should just chill the fuck out and wait until his new show actually airs. Then you can try your hardest to form an unbiased opinion. Key word is try

It's a shame John Oliver went to HBO.

Current Daily Show correspondents/contributors:

John Hodgman or Aasif Mandvi is the only ones I could see having a show.

Lewis Black is great (my favorite comedian), but he hasnt't had a good track record for shows. Not to mention his standup has been kinda "meh" in recent years.

is Jason Jones gone?

He was doing bits on Sochi not too long ago.

Hodgman at least has a serviceable character. I like Stewart doing straight satire, then passing it on to an absurdist satire show after.

I'm not sure why people think he'd really want to be on air for an hour each day, five days a week rather than have a 1/2 hour, four days a week?

Yeah, that as well. He earns far more with less work, than what I assume CBS would be willing to pay him if he were to takeover for Letterman.

Jessica Williams

John Hodgman
Kristen Schaal
Larry Wilmore

I've always wondered how resentful Samantha Bee must be over how all the guys from her class (Colbert, Carrell, Helms, etc) basically all huge stars now and she's...not.

Edit: I got things mixed up a little. Yeah I imagine Stewart is probably very happy where he is.

It's weird. The Colbert Report is pretty much his legacy. This seems like a step down to me. The traditional late night talk show format is kinda stale.

Yeah. Colbert Report is fine social commentary. The Late Show is mainstream celebrity gossip and frivolity. This is absolutely terrible.

Didn't even get from the first page before I found a comment I couldn't agree more with.

Looking at Stephen Colbert's training and performance history, very little indicates he's got the chops to handle late night variety. Colbert spent his career becoming a satirical artist, which he then refined through the Daily Show and Colbert Report. His satire is his comedy. He studied dramatic acting at Northwestern, FFS! I can't see him doing a Letterman or Fallon style monologue, and I really can't see him doing silly skits like Fallon does.

Edit:
The worst part of this news is we still don't know the person who will be replacing Letterman.

This. Precisely this.
Stephen Colbert the actor has spent the last 17 years creating Stephen Colbert the character and has done little else. Strangers with Candy and a few animated voice overs are his entire resume outside of the "Stephen Colbert" persona.

Wow, pretty big news! The Colbert Report is excellent, so I hope Stephen can bring the same level of entertainment to The Late Show.

His satire is his comedy. I can't see him doing a Letterman or Fallon style monologue.
I see Colbert as more of a trailblazer rather than trying to fit his style of comedy into a predetermined mold. He knows his strengths and weaknesses as a comedian.

I think his brand of show will be a lot different than what we've seen before or what people are expecting

I'd love to see them change the daily show format and extend the interviews along with lengthen Stewarts news coverage.

Give Aasif Mandvi a 20/20 satire style show (in the vein of Brass Eye) to follow.

I'll be sad to see him go, but man if anyone can try to do something great with late night tv it would be Colbert.

I'll throw my hat into the Aasif Mandvi circle. That man could be glorious! :x

If Colbert can shake up the late night format, or at least offer something distinctly his, then the loss of the Colbert Report is justified. I'm curious to watch.

NOOOoooo.gif

Really love The Colbert Report but I don't really have much any interest in watching him host The Late Show. Am I the only one?

I would much prefer to wait and see what he does. I think people saying this will be amazing or terrible are jumping the gun. Colbert is not a simple guy. He likes to shake things up and I think it is worth seeing what he is going to do.

Fallon will have the more successor run with the tonight when it is all said and done.

With Leno and Letterman departing and Fallon and Colbert stepping in, the target demographic for network late night has been shifted down by 30 years. We are the target audience now, finally.

I actually will make the prediction that, Colbert is going to beat out Fallon in the end. Colbert has a lot more wit and substance. I've watched a couple hours of Fallon's show and I never even crack a smile. In fact I get annoyed at his fawning, airheaded nice guy schtick. Colbert has had me in fucking tears several times over the years.

We are a much more cynical generation than the one that watched Carson, Leno, and Letterman. You can't just gee-shucks your way to success with us. Colbert has edge, and wit, and on a whim will say things that are just bring-the-house-down funny.

I'll never forget when Arianna Huffington was on during McCain's bid for president and was making fun of his "passion" for winning the Iraq war and talking up "the surge," joking that it was "his viagra." Colbert said: "I guess the warning label on that should be, if your erection lasts more than 10 years, pull out?"

Fallon could never dream of such a funny riff, much less do it on the spot and deliver it perfectly.

Interesting and slightly unexpected choice. I eagerly await reactions from all the idiots who don't realize he's been playing a bit for the past 10 years.

While I would agree you have to think about who the bosses are and what the show will be about. I think Fallon does his job very well. Hes palatable and he has some great synergy with the band.

Colbert has been doing a faux news show for a while now. He won't be doing that any more. I imagine he will have a lot less room to rock the boat.

The bigger thing that will probably get me to switch to CBS is that Colbert on a whole is a more likable and entertaining person. He has personality and a charming aspect. Fallon's show is fun and has great bits but Fallon himself just doesn't connect with me as much. Even when the guests or certain that bits aren't funny I'll still watch for Colbert. Fallon? I'll just watch the good bits on youtube.

Also here's an interview out of character with his Wife and Oprah which really shows this off. He's such a nice guy.

Also won't Letterman and his company be producing the show? I imagine as long as he doesn't piss off advertisers he'll have much more freedom than people are thinking he'll have

I think Fallon's success shows that people are getting kind of tired of cynicism.

Well it will certainly be interesting to see how this plays out. I like Colbert but I'm unsure about this move.

You mustn't watch his show much then. He has plenty of material that doesn't rely heavily on satire or even at all and does silly skits frequently. Watch him with a range of guests and you'll often see the satirical comedy take a backseat while still managing to be very funny. He harmonizes well with musical guests as well. Satirical comedy may have been his calling card to this point, the foot in the door, but he's well established his ability to handle "variety" (for whatever worth that term has in the very predictable late night format) over the course of his career.

As much as I love Colbert, I worry that he's going to have to change his style to appeal to the more mainstream network TV crowd. The problem is that he has a gimmick - being the parody of a conservative pundit ala Hannity, Rush, and Beck. When he does this, it's extremely funny, but I worry that the typical CBS demographic, which typically skews older and more conservative, may find his jokes more offensive. Then again, Letterman is a big liberal, so who knows.
