Stephen Colbert will take over the Late Show on September 8th, replacing David Letterman after more than two decades as host. Letterman's final show will be May 20th. Colbert was chosen to be the Late Show's new host — the second host in its entire history — last April, at which point he began winding down the long-running Colbert Report. The Report ended its nine-year run last month with a star-studded finale, giving Colbert over half a year's time to prepare his new series and begin moving into the Ed Sullivan Theater once Letterman moves out.

That's a lot time for fans of Colbert to see him off the air, but it's widely expected that he'll come into the Late Show refreshed and ready to take advantage of the broader comedy palette that it'll afford him. For the past nine years, he's been focused on political satire of a very specific, exaggerated type. That character won't come with him over to CBS, giving him much more room as a comedian and host. There's no word yet on what Colbert's incarnation of the Late Show will be like, but it'll be interesting to see what he does with it to compete with Jimmy Fallon's eccentric incarnation of The Tonight Show.

CBS also announced today that the Late Late Show's new incarnation, featuring host James Corden, will premiere March 23rd. Craig Ferguson ended his run as host last month.

Wait. Who is James Corden.

I hate when people ask who famous people are in threads, but seriously who is James Corden?

Looks to be a random British tv actor and comedian.

Damn, that's a long break. Really curious to see how this goes as far as what exactly the show will be and what him not playing a character will be like.

Yeah. Well, for the Daily Show.

Crazy. I would think that he can't really change it since everyone knows him as that (a la Hulk Hogan as opposed to Terry Bollea) but I guess we'll see. I think if he started going by Colbert as it's spelled, people would just be confused, but he has the gig for years to come so maybe he can get people to transition to it over time.

i still can't feel like this is a weird step down for him. I feel like the political satire he did on colbert report would be alot more personally satisfying as it actually has somewhat of an impact (his show & the daily show got me interested in political events and was instrumental to educating me and tons of other people in my age group)...

I certainly get that from Jon Stewart. I can't ever see him doing anything else..

Guess I'll wait and see what he'll do before making any snap judgements.

how the new larry wilmore show ends up being good.

Yeah, I honestly thought Steve Carrell would have been a better fit for this, but hey, I like Colbert too, so good for him for hitting "the big time".

So far away... and we really have no idea what it'll be like.

I can't imagine Colbert doing late night like any of the other guys, should be interesting to say the least!

Shit, I thought I heard he'd be on in like March. Oh well. It's going to be great. Colbert is a fricken genius.

Letterman leaves in May. They have to construct a set (which takes over a month) and the premiere would do better for the fall.

I am looking forward to more Colbert. I will have Fallon and The Nightly Show to keep me occupied until then.

If it's anything like the jump Jimmy Fallon made expect bland, inoffensive jokes about celebrities and current events (but nothing political or too heavy/challenging) and unfunny skits where celebrities badly act funny in order to make themselves look human.

Kind of an unfair comparison, in that Jimmy Fallon didn't really change anything about what he does when he made the leap. I'd say like 95-99% of his M.O. stayed exactly the same in his transition to the Tonight Show.

I too hope he has a recurring sketch that reverts him back to his formal political satire character. I'm sure we'll all like the real Stephen Colbert* as well

Plus after a year he found a happy medium and makes some very entertaining late night television.

Seth Meyers on the other hand...

Colbert is bringing his writing team with it as far as I'm aware, so I doubt there will be much change.

but he has les savy fav as his backing band!

i never watched his show, but i never heard anything about it either

Jimmy Fallon always sucked but yeah, I'm worried about this. I don't think he'll really be able to do any heavy political satire or controversial jokes for fear of offending audiences, and the political stuff is like 90% of the reason i watch Colbert and Stewart. I've basically always tuned out the interviews with boring celebrities. It's why I've never liked late night talk shows.

I'm definitely going to give his show a shot, but unless he completely revolutionizes late night talk shows i very much doubt I'll be interested.

Colbert is one of the smartest people in television, period. He's way more versatile than I think people give him credit for. He'll be fine.

Oh, okay. I was probably confusing it with the new Late Late Show or something. I also thought Letterman was leaving way earlier in the year.

Will he likely be Letterman's final guest?

Probably Leno.

Colbert is keeping the silent T as well, that's how he presents himself everywhere.

I think The Colbert Report was a unique and brilliant show, and it kind of saddens me that Colbert is gonna do monologue, desk, guest one, guest two, musical act. Seems like a waste of his talents. All due respect to Jimmy Fallon and Seth Meyers, but those dudes aren't half the comedian Colbert is. Ferguson was within that mold, but he was so brilliant thinking on his feet that he overcame any deficits in the format.

I don't doubt his intelligence or versatility. I just doubt that he can make me enjoy a late night formula that I've always hated. And I'm very skeptical that the network would let him do anything as big/controversial/political as stuff like Colbert SuperPAC, or anything deemed too offensive or divisive. I just struggle to see this being anything other than a downgrade from the Report as far as my tastes go.

The only way i really see myself watching this for the long haul is if he completely throws out the late night formula and starts over with his own thing, including a solid dose of scathing political satire.

I don't think I can go this long without Stephen. I've watched him every night for nearly the past decade. I'm already starting to get a little depressed TDS came back but afterwards no Colbert :(

This is going to be excruciating. I miss you Stephen Colbert.

He was pronouncing his last name with a silent "T" long before the daily show. It was something even his father wanted to do. I don't think he is ever going to switch back.

Yeah it's interesting to me that people are talking about it like they have an inside scoop, but their info's off.

Yeah, I think people are confused. I believe other people in his family do use a hard T, and he did when he was a child. But he's been Col-bear for most of his life.
