Steve Jobs resigns as CEO of Apple

Honest question, How important was Steve Jobs role in Apple?

I've never owned an Apple product so I wouldn't know. Why is everyone going crazy that he resigned? Can't Apple just continue without him?

He's obviously an incredible business man, but as I detest the products he has led the company to release, I hope whoever comes next designs products more appealing for me personally.

I hope he remains healthy or survives his health issues if he is not.

I don't think they have a hope in hell in satisfying someone who uses the word 'detest' in relation to their products. You also seem to have a conflated sense of self importance.

Eh, not one of the biggest. He can always return. This isn't as big as the Google or HP news from last week.

He's been interim CEO for awhile now because "he can always return." Steve stepping down is Steve stepping down. His health is probably pretty bad at this point.

His the one who brought Apple from the brink of collapse. iMacs, iPod, iPhone, iPad - all thank to him. 20 years earlier - Mac OS GUI, years before Windows.

This is bigger. Apple is THE WORLD'S MOST VALUABLE COMPANY and their CEO JUST STEPPED DOWN.

I'm not even an Apple guy, but the biggest CEO on the planet stepping down = biggest individual company news this year.

Damn...cmon yall. Hit youtube and check out documentaries. This guy has been a lot more to computing and the tech field than just some random CEO. He really has. I guarantee you will be entertained.

Yeah it is. Steve Jobs IS Apple pretty much. Apple's stock prices are almost tied directly to the man. This out trumps the Google and HP news by miles.

Sad to see him go. And his vision will carry Apple for a few years, but MS/Google will be kings in smartphones in a few years, kings in tablets, and PC manufacturers will eat into Apple's high end computer market.

I don't use a Mac and likely never will. But for what he did to smartphones with the iPhone (which was the greatest device I ever owned), I will always give him his due.

time to buy stock and watch it go right back up with the iPhone 5

Oh right, iPhone 5 announcement must be coming soon which is why he decided to resign now. Though we knew that already. The phone must be really awesome then.

Apple probably would not exist anymore if Steve did not come back and revitalize the company in the late 90s/early 00s.

Holy shit. You knew it was coming sooner or later, but it is still shocking. It is actually smart to do this before the iPhone 5 announcement though. Announce retirement, see stock dive. Announce new phone and possibly on more carriers, see stock climb back some.

Get better Steve. Who cares about multi billion corporations. Apple will survive. This is a man's health. :/

He is about as impactful as one person can be on that large of a corporation. it will still be a solid company for many many years but without him I fear stagnation will ensue. I also believe that this is ultimately bad for the consumer and stockholders.

He was very important, not only as a front man, but he's lead the direction of many of their products, they're made to his specific tastes. He certainly didn't do anything on his own, but he was the driving force behind their products.

Apple can carry on without him of course, and they will. It would be crazy to see Apple fall apart the second time he leaves.

It's going to be sad that he probably won't be able to see the new Apple HQ finished, let alone step into it based on him resigning today.

Yes, it does. Could be one of the larger business stories in the next 3-5 years.

NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO!!!

Resign as CEO and memoir release date gets pushed up. This is very bad.

The bolded is what I worry about. And not just for apple products but for all of the industries they participate in. They have led the charge, more than a few times and are likely the sole reason we have such an awesomely fast moving smartphone market right now. I really hope either Cook fills that role or someone/something else pops up to keep tech companies at each others throats forcing innovation and advancement.

Why are people saying "it's gotta be his health"?

Are there rumors that he's going to Hollywood to be an actor or train to become an NFL lineman?

I dont know why i was expecting this to happen way later than in 2011, tablets are just starting to take the market by storm. Oh well, all the best to him.

Thanks for the replies. It's just the way everyone is replying has me picturing that Steve Jobs was so important that now that he's left, Apple are going to do something like this:
