wait ... was anchorman 2 passed on as well??!!?

Jesus Christ >_< Sequels to arguably two of the best comedies of the decade were passed on!?!?!? Hollywood ... it's like I don't even know you anymore ...

You guys are taking these passes out of context though. How much would these films cost to make now with how expensive and popular those casts have become? It's not like Paramount passing is an inherent declaration that they hate the original moves or the concepts for the sequels, but maybe they're not financially viable.

While it does significantly increase the budget, Anchorman and Zoolander became much bigger films and are arguably more popular now then they were when they came out. That plus the fact that these people actually have huge starpower now unlike when Anchorman and Zoolander first came out which makes the movies more marketable. Plus these are people who can negotiate moderate contracts, and then take a percentage of the gross or profit which can lead to less risk for the studio. I mean there is really no reason outside of the actors/writers/directors salaries that these movies need to cost any more then their originals. Outside of the talent they could go with a tiny budget for the rest of it because these movies do not demand huge effects or insane sets. This is not a Land of the Lost situation where you have to pay the actors a huge amount and then make a huge budget film on top of paying the talent.

Except that the entire cast of Anchorman wanted to do the sequel so bad that they agreed to massive pay cuts.

Zoolander is the only Ben Stiller movie I have ever enjoyed. I would not mind a sequel if is can be as good as the first.

Tropic Thunder was way better and should get a sequel :D

But Zoolander is the other Stiller movie that is good. All of his others are just plain bad :P

And there basically is an Anchorman 2 with "Wake Up, Ron Burgundy: The Lost Movie" And it wasnt half bad either! :D

Do you mean starring Stiller, or directed? I like Mystery Men if the former, and Cable Guy if the latter.

REALITY BITES is pretty good too. he's also great as the crazy orderly in HAPPY GILMORE.

. . . that's to say nothing of ROYAL TENENBAUMS, which is one of my favorite movies period.

You're flattering me.

Go make me a Dodgeball sequel, Stiller. Fuck that noise about Zoolander 2.
Dodgeball over Zoolander?

You really are a terrible person!

Dodgeball was funny. Zoolander didn't even make me smile, much less laugh. Terrible, movie.

Edit: Actually, GAF is the only place I've encountered people who actually liked Zoolander.

Wow, we have completely opposing views on comedy.

Oh man Zoolander is fuck awesome, by far my fav Stiller movie.

The fact Paramount passed is a mixed blessing, I'd HATE a bad sequel.

I liked Dodgeball a lot when it came out, but it hasn't aged too well IMO. There's kind of almost no second act to the movie, it's weird. Stiller is the best part to it though.

something seems very unnatural and affected about DODGEBALL to me. it's trying a little too hard most of the time, i suppose is what i mean--like they said, "we should do another wacky comedy like ZOOLANDER!" but ZOOLANDER is lightning in a bottle, man. owen wilson just owns that movie. and someone pointed out the involvement of drake sather as the writer, who i wasn't familiar with prior, but who in retrospect i see did some great great work on NEWSRADIO. there's nuance to ZOOLANDER that a lot of people can overlook.

I hate comedy sequels. They almost never work. The biggest part of comedy is surprise, when you reintroduce all the same characters (and their foibles) you totally eliminate that aspect of the first film that made it so great.

True but when they work its amazing.

I liked Dodgeball, but it was no Zoolander. Stopped laughing at Dodgeball the third or fourth time...still laughing at Zoolander. I've watched it at least 8 times now :D

Truly a sequel that milked its premise waaay beyond what the original did.

what makes it great is that they realized the first movie wasn't retarded enough, and therefore injected the sequel with 100ccs of distilled gelatinous retardation. bernie as a zombie is brilliant, and the fact that he can only be animated by the sounds of a sweet caribbean drum beat gives the filmmaker numerous opportunities to not only emphasize the tropical climate, but to put bernie into humorous situations where he is doing something and then stops suddenly. i wish i could convey why it's so funny, but you've really got to see the masters at work to understand.
