Stop sexualizing half-naked female cosplayers, Mr. Pegg

There's a difference between looking at something and coming up to someone and commenting on it.... Just because you see a sexy woman doesn't mean you have to go up to them and tell them that they're sexy...

Why wouldn't you? I thought my wife was sexy and I went up and told her she was sexy.

Now I'm happily married.

I have curly hair and some people like pointing that out. But I'd really rather not be bothered by them. Does that mean I should try to straighten my hair?

No, it means you need to get over yourself. You have nice hair. Deal with it.

It's probably just me hating cons and in general con attendees but the attention seeking men and women who dress purposely lewd are the worst.

If you're going to be a sxxy_ge3k_gurl at least cover up:

So, the fact that it bothers some people doesn't really bother you at all? That's great...

What are you CREEPS looking at, this is just how the characters dress normally. #geek

I hated Cyclops until I saw that pic.

Nice.

If it bothers you that people think your body (which you're showing off) is beautiful, that's an issue that YOU have. Not the person complimenting you.

Anyone reading her twitterfeed at the moment? Am i interpreting things right? She gets into an argument with Pegg, nobody can see what Pegg tweets to her and after that Pegg publicly apologizes for his tweet. She goes on to publish Pegg's direct tweets and gets pissed at him for retweeting the link (thus allowing his followers to see whats going on) ?

Why is it creepy to point out women as being attractive or sexy? It's a basic human function to find members of the opposite sex attractive. (Obviously we all this creepy at certain times, but I'm just wondering why, what makes it creepy?)

Why do people associate finding a woman attractive, or wanting to have sex with her, as objectifying her?

Of course cos-players don't exist to fulfill Peggs sexuall fantisies, but they do.

She is loving the attention.

I bet even shinji would comment on her look.

Why are you saying 'think'? My example isn't about 'thought' at all. It's about going up to people (that you presumably don't know) and telling them what you think of their appearance.

Woe is you. You have nice hair and that's a problem? Let me play you a song on this violin I happen to be carrying.

I thought I was a feminist until i got onto this board and now I don't even know.

That apparently is the offensive part
I would like to add, they are not saying that my hair is nice (which it is not, it is quite unkempt), they are saying that it is curly. Probably different from what they are used to.

He didn't even say anything offensive. The worst he did was acknowledge that they were attractive

Fine, let me rephrase;

If it bothers you that people SAY your body (which your showing off) is beautiful, that's an issue that YOU have. Not the person complimenting you.

Yep, pretty much.

That's like an attractive male walking around dressed like fucking Tarzan, Conan, whatever in public and like someone else mentioned, they have plenty of Leia choices. Fuck, I don't see anyone cosplaying her fucking Hoth costume do I? No, I don't.

Can't believe this took so long and I was the one to post it.

I don't know about you, but if someone came up to me and told me I was sexy I'd thank them. If someone came up to me and told me they wanted to bend me over and fuck me up the ass I'd think they were a creep. It depends on what they are saying, but what Mr. Pegg did was just say that they were attractive. He absolutely did not deserve the tongue lashing he got.

"Immoral, vulgar, gay-loving feminist. Also a geek, gamer, atheist, and science fiction acafan. I run a feminist Doctor Who blog: doctorher.com"

I wonder what she would think of John Barrowman's comments regarding some of the male cosplayer's "packages" at comic-con this year.

So you'd be cool if a bunch of gay guys were all up on, complimenting your ass, giving you a nice suggestive once over, asking for your phone number, wanting to buy you a drink and so on?

You have to think of it not from the (and I'm using this in the neutral/descriptive not judgmental way) predator perspective, but the prey's. What is the woman thinking? What level of attention is she asking for? Would you be comfortable if a random stranger approached you and behaved identically?

Short of harassment, I think this world could use a bit more directness. I tell people all the time (strangers and otherwise) if I like their t-shirt, shoes, even hair. I can't imagine any of those people being pissed that I complimented something about them. My mind is boggling.

I agree with Gaborn earlier in the thread with regard to cultural expectations. I don't think what Pegg said is offensive except MAYBE the doughnuts thing but I feel that's still open to a level of interpretation.

Look. If I find a girl attractive I find her attractive, if that's because she's wearing next to nothing with pikachu ears and a yellow lightning bolt tail then so be it I'm not going pretend that I'm not. What I'm not going to do is invite the faulty logic that just because I find her attractive the intent there was to attract me, because that would make me an idiot, I just plain don't know what she's getting out of it, maybe she really is trying to attract dudes, maybe not. After that it's just like... man I don't know how to say this without it sounding incredibly stupid and basic, but, recognize that you are talking to or talking about another person.

I think it's a question of the specific behaviour they're engaging in. If they're making catcalls and lewd gestures and shit then that's bullshit but I wouldn't be offended if a gay guy tried to pick me up. I'd tell him I'm straight and I'm not interested but I wouldn't have a problem with it. I can't assume to always know what someone else wants so I have to act first and find out afterword in many situations unfortunately.

Do you think a majority of people at cons are smooth operators?

They go with other people, take photographs, build costumes for other people or help them out, show off their craftsmanship. Cosplaying isn't about getting dude's dicks hard for some people.

These guys shouldn't be making lewd comments, but you're never going to stop men from becoming sexually aroused, or at least interested in a sexual way, if they see a good looking woman in a skimpy outfit. Ever. These cosplayers might not want that to happen, but it will happen. This is biology.

You were too quick for my edit :)

I'd probably thank them for the complements, but yes, no doubt I would feel at least slightly weird.

I can't believe I'm asking for this, for source please... *drowns in shame*

People can get aroused all the want but if they think the intent is to do so every time, then they need to grow up a bit.

I don't swing that way, but hey, that'd give me a nice self-esteem boost.

I imagine most of them don't say shit. They hover in the corner looking at what they could only imagine attaining. But the guys who would go up and say something are the type of guys who aren't going to say something idiotic. Of course, I imagine there are a few exceptions. Lewd comments are one thing, but I've never seen any woman verbally harassed like that at the cons I've been to. Pegg was being nothing but complimentary. Nothing wrong with that.

If I'm walking around a place filled with mostly gay men and I'm dressed like this;

hot-guy.jpg

I have nothing to bitch and moan about.

So strange.

It's not like they don't know the outfits are generally sexy.. they are dressing as characters that were designed to be sexy...

It's one thing to ask people to be respectful when acknowledging sexiness, but it seems like all Pegg did was say that these women are attractive to him.. in fairly non-offensive terms.. him admiring them is what offends these women?

Beyond simply wondering "why" they are offended.. is this even REMOTELY realistic or practical?

I'm sure that the majority of people at cons don't know the meaning of the word tact when taking with cosplay girls.

But I see nothing inherently wrong with commenting on someone being sexy, attractive, etc, but, of course, there's always the chance the person will find it creepy.

Right. Now think about the women. First of all most men approaching the women like that ASSUME they're straight and interested. Even if they tell a man they're GAY sometimes they're just considered a challenge or playing hard to get. You know that men can be incredibly persistent. If I acted towards all men like a lot of straight guys act to women I'd get a LOT of shit from people.

Don't you mean.. someone saw a picture of me, and commented on that picture on Twitter?

That'd be fucking awesome IMO, I would feel immortal instead of offended.

I have been complimented before by gay guys. it's actually a hell of an ego boost.

There is no reason to suggest Pegg was being preparatory. This isn't the dude in the elevator. it's a guy on twitter saying something completely harmless. Maybe their are situations where a guy should pretend to be asexual but this isn't one of them.

Not to mention they helped out with a film shoot. I doubt most of them are part of the ''geek community'' as the lady in OP argued... I bet there was a casting call for attractive women who'd be wearing to wear the princess leia costume.
