Stories in games that will never be finished.

Blame Ubisoft for half-arsing the intended ending in AC3 and having absolutely no idea where to go with it afterwards.

Uh, what was the intended ending in AC3?
I mean, I know it was originally planned as a trilogy and that went downward fast, but did we ever get some details on how it was supposed to end?

For my part, I haven't given up hope on Alan Wake and Darksiders. I do consider Half Life 3 a lost case, tho.

Xenosaga Series. Ended with Xenosaga 3. While an amazing game that tied things up with an epic ending, there was still stuff left unanswered.

Lost Jerusalem.

Here we go with the Zero Time Dilemma haters again.

May I remind you it has an 84 on Metacritic? It's in the running for my personal GOTY 2016, great end to the fantastic Zero Escape trilogy full of awesome characters, music and puzzles. The creator already explained the "?" stuff in VLR isn't canon, what a bizarre thing to be so hung up on.

Since when did a Metacritic score mean we should all accept something as objectively good and decide our valid opinions are wrong?

It's not just the '?' ending, it's the severe drop in quality and inconsistency in writing, the plot holes, the weak and irrelevant characters in contrast to the tightly connected, slowly unraveling web that the casts were in the prior games, a primary twist that feels both unconnected to VLR and is fundamentally unsatisfying due to not being remotely guessable by the player leading up to it, and the fact that the series' most pressing mysteries that Uchikoshi even teased post-VLR remain unsolved.

D-END 1 and D-END 2 are two of my favourite moments in gaming this year. The game as a whole was not.

I'm just speculating tbh, maybe there are solid details out there, I can't for one second believe they went to all that effort to set up that ending.

I'd bet serious money that they changed their plans about the ending when the series was cemented as annualised.

The Order's lore and potential is by far the best thing about the game. It's a shame that such a cool concept went to waste. I really wish the game would have done better so that we could see the next part. I LOVED almost all of the characters in the game.

I knew the series was screwed at the end of AC2
when you don't kill Borgia I fuckin knew they were gonna stretch and milk that plot line for far too long

To see the ending of 3 was just affirmation that Ubisoft had no idea of what to do or any intention of actually finishing up what Patrice built

I haven't given up on a sequel just yet. Would be such a crying shame for that engine to go to waste, I'd murder to see it on the Pro.

I mean, given AC's commitment to semi-historical accuracy (all of the targets were real people who actually died in the year you kill them) back in those days wasn't it a given that Borgia wouldn't die in the game? I went into it entirely expecting to kill a body double or something, given that Alexander VI historicallly died 4 or so years after AC2s last mission.

In all fairness, I enjoyed ZTD but it still didn't feel like a particularly GOOD ending to the Zero Escape trilogy. Thematically, maybe, but even then it was more hung up on doing its own thing than fitting nicely with the themes of the first two games. Which isn't necessarily a bad thing, but is a long ways away from what most people were expecting the Epic Conclusion to the Trilogy to be after the hype.

VLR was quite a bit different than 999 already. The tone/thematic difference in ZTD is no different than going from 999 to VLR. I know not everyone got the ending they were hoping for, but it did end so Zero Escape doesn't even fit the theme of this thread.

The general public and the reviewers that were anticipating ZTD all loved it though? How is that not valid? The posters on here make it sound like a fire dumpster but it's actually a really good game.

The twists in ZTD were all better than that dumb ass Sigma twist in VLR where
he sees his own reflection near the end and realizes he's old and has a prosthetic eye that is literally sticking forward out of his skull.
. I love VLR, and I think it does some things better than ZTD, but I'd argue that Zero Time Dilemma is better overall plus it has a better cast (Carlos was a great addition). Even the pandering was toned down which was nice.

Wait...don't think I don't see that Gab in your avi lol!

Homeworld got its story finished
It finished on a "..but wait there's more!" note if anything. Remember reading the leaked Relic plan docs for Homeworld 3 back in the day and being really mad at Sierra going under. Maybe there's hope under Gearbox/Blackbird for a sequel.

Oh man I never saw that. Now I'm really curious.

Brothers in Arms.

If Gearbox ever grows some balls to do another one, no way in hell are they returning to Baker and squad after 8+ years.

I actually had to pause and go "where is that boat from?" before it dawned on me. I had actually forgotten it.

Now I'm sad again.

The Borealis story thread becomes even more painful when you play through Portal 2.
In Portal 2, you get more detail on the Borealis ship and what it was doing before the accident that caused it to vanish from dry dock. You even find the remains of the Borealis dry dock in the under belly of Aperture Science labs. It honestly was an amazing moment in the game, if you know what you were looking at, and a great Easter egg for anyone that played HL2 and its episodes. It was also a troll ass tease from Valve.

Too Human.

Whatever flaws there were with the main game, there was a very interesting sci-fi take on Norse Mythology set up with lots of scope to progress down the line.

Alas it'll never see the light of day.

See, I feel like this one wasn't meant to go any further than the one game. I can get the desire for a sequel, but I think the intention was to present the player with a morally grey ending and then leave it at that. Unless I'm wrong and they wanted to make a sequel?

Tomb Raider Legend/Underworld.

I like the reboots, but I'd still love to see a conclusion to the Legend/Underworld storyline. It should have been a trilogy...

Zeno Clash, the fact that no one is even mentioning what I consider one of the best games ever made is heart breaking to me.
Zeno Clash 2 is epic, and that ending was damn satisfying while a lot remains unanswered.

The sales of the ZC series aren't that great so I doubt we're going to see ZC3 any time soon if ever :(

?

It was finished, and it ended lamely.

I recall Insomniac saying that Resistance 3's ending wasn't
people triumphing over the Chimera, just people finally gaining victories. But the Chimera are still on Earth.

There's also a bunch of stuff we'll never get answers to, like the Pure Chimera and everything Daedalus was talking about in Resistance 2; "we are going home."

Bulletstorm

Well there is the remaster coming out soon. So hopefully that bodes well for a sequel.

I don't think a remaster has ever sold more than the original game, so I wouldn't say it's very likely to change anyone's mind. On the other hand, I've got to assume PCF bought the IP with an intent to use it for more than just a remaster, so if they can actually fund it i think we may see a sequel

Yeah definitely. Hell, even if we don't get a second game at least there'll be a PC version without GFWL.

The Saboteur.

Fuck you, EA. Fuck you to hell.

Yeah, this one stings quite a bit. Absolutely loved The Saboteur.

Viewtiful Joe, the second game ended in a cliffhanger with a mysterious castle rising from the ground with Joe and Silva riding off towards it, we were also going to find out the mystery behind the VFX watch and who created them.

Zygarde role and any unresolved plot in X and Y are forever left unresolved as Game Freak opted to skip to gen 7 with Sun and Moon and throw Zygarde in but he plays no role in the game what so ever.

Anachronox_Characters.png

Anachronox' story will never be resolved. I think I read somewhere that there were originally three games planned. The first one ends on a huge cliffhanger (
"Let's get some breakfast."
). If Tom Hall ever tries to kickstart Anachronox 2, I'll be backing it the second it goes up. But the rights to the game are probably lost in Square Enix' legal hell.
I'd play a sequel with identical graphics, engine, and bugs just to experience that universe again.

Yep, the silly refusal to accept what the author of the series explained is back again.

Also might wanna spoiler that bit that I spoiler'd in the quote.
