Square Enix developer Hiroshi Takai has given a big endorsement to Microsoft's console, stating that it's "a lot easier" to work with than the PS3.

Speaking in the latest issue of Official Xbox Magazine UK, the Last Remnant director said he's crossing his fingers that his next project will be on the Xbox 360

"It's been the team's first time working with Xbox 360 and the Unreal Engine," he said. "In both cases the experience has been a positive one. In fact, as we've only just finished work on Last Remnant I don't even know what my next project is going to be at Square Enix. However, I'm very much hoping it'll be for Xbox 360 as it's been a lot easier to work with than PlayStation 3."

It's not the first time the RPG powerhouse has sent Xbox its love; Star Ocean and Infinite Undiscovery are both on Microsoft's box, and of course Final Fantasy XIII is finally confirmed for the box.

Takai told OXM the company has been making more moves to appeal to the West. "We didn't try to appeal to one audience or the other, but tried to give everything we did a global appeal," he said. "From a visual standpoint there are some things you can get away with in Western games... characters can be less clean-cut."

Last Remnant is a technical mess yet this guy is all praises for MS. Go figure!

UT3 on 360 allows us to push out one of the most technically flawed games of the generation by only employing 1 programmer half-time for the project! It's great!

(Yeah, so I hate technical flaws and am not at all enamoured with UT3)

He's right of course, but his "credentials" only serve to undermine his point.

Unreal Engine 3 easier to work with on 360 than on ps3 ? THIS IS NEWS.

no shit sherlock. only insane people don't acknowledge this these days.

the PS3 is harder to work with. skilled programmers can still do amazing things with the PS3.

I might have followed him if his game was technically good. It certainly isn't, so I don't see why he's raving about the unreal engine...

You'd wonder if the X360 was even easier to develop for what TLR would look like. *shrug*

Now I can see why the PC version has been announced and the PS3 version is still TBA.

If Epic can make it work why not SE?

Eastern devs.

EDIT ADDED: Thank you for confirming what so many developers have been saying for the entire lifetime of the PS3. But there's a difference between your game and theirs... Theirs had fewer technical issues on the "harder to develop" console, than your game on the "easier to develop" console.

wait what Square Enix didt work on Last Remnant they just slap they name on it or am i wrong?

as far as i know they all working on FF13's

Why is Last Remnant a technical mess?

Again: they are eastern devs, working with UE3.

If they weren't able to pull it off on the X360, no wonder why he's hating on the PS3. In fact, this proves that:

- We won't see the PS3 for a long time, probably Summer/Fall 09.
- Even if they take that long to complete it, it will be a fucking mess.

The latter is almost a given, the first one seems plausible.

Guys like Square

Guys like Square haven't released a single game for the PS3 atm.

UE3 works better on 360 than on PS3!
News at 11!

And I'm willing to bet that the PS3 version will at least be at the level of the 360 version or better. Japanese RPG fans aren't as forgiving of technical glitches as US fans.

Hopefully S-E gets a capable team to port the game to the PS3. From what I've seen, TLR is a beautiful game, but there should be no reason why any of the HD consoles + PC should not be able to run it without it's technical problems.

this has been stated many times...still TLR is not exactly amazing looking.... FFXIII is already looking far far better

I'm interesting in knowing what the dev team thinks once they start working on the 360 version.

He told OXM eh? And hasn't it been known that 360 is easier to work with?

Conspiracy theory incoming.

Also meltdowns too. :P

Couldn't you just say the same thing with the 360?

"A skilled programmer could do amazing things with the 360"

I don't see the financial benefit to programming on the PS3 unless you get paid money to do it. Less install base, harder hardware. Less potential profit and longer development cycle.

Does Sony pay people to make exclusives for their console? (this isn't a troll, I'm just looking at it from a business perspective).

The PS3 version of Last Remnant must be horrible then. All I hear about Last Remnant is all the flaws and slowdowns...

Damn that sucks with the issues. :/ Was considering of getting it if it ever hit the PS3.

Its still a pretty fun game if you can look past the technical problems. I have to agree with everyone else though that he probably shouldnt praise how easy the console is to work with if his game doesnt work very well on it. If the PS3 version is worse then it might get close to unplayable.

I dont really care about these "Ps3 is too hard to develop for" stories anymore. Yes, its designed differently, and has challenges. Put in the hands of a skilled developer who will actually take the time to learn the system well, and use it well, and you get amazing things (Insomniac, Naughty Dog). In the end it wont hurt the PS3.

Didnt we hear the same gripes from Lorne Lanning back in the PS2 days, and that system went on to sell tremendously, and still is selling.

I'm pretty sure people get paid to develop games no matter what console they develop on ;)

Anyways, unless you have actually developed on the PS3, you don't know how easy or hard it is to develop on it. UE3 wasn't developed with the PS3 architecture in mind, so that's why it's harder to get the most out of the PS3 using UE3 (which is in the context of what the S-E guy was saying).

My friend, who works for EA, has developed for both the 360 and PS3, and he says they're both basically the same thing. It's the "oomph" factor on PS3 games that you have to put extra effort in to get.

I meant does Sony pay development studios to make a game exclusive to their console? I haven't been following the "behind the scenes" stuff of gaming for almost a year now, but I remember these types of stories popping up.

Doesn't seem to make business sense to develop exclusively for that console. Makes more sense to develop for 360 and port to PS3 as cheaply as possible for maximum profit.
