Streets of Rage 4 new gameplay video....

I dunno, I desperately want this to be good, its number 1 on my 2020 list but I'm just not getting any SOR vibes from it.

Main problem for me is the sound design. Nothing fits correctly with the original games.

Hit sound effects are weak compared to the original games, the few musics have no charm compared to the ones composed by Yuzo Koshiro, even though they try to imitate the style in terms of instruments.

Graphics are actually pretty good in my opinion and they do match quite well the series, I do feel like I am looking at Streets of Rage.

It probably won't be as good as 2 and 3, but this looks like it will be fun to play with my sons. I'll get the Steam version, since a 125% speed mod and some swapped music tracks will go a long way to add some Rage back into the game.

Just going by the various videos released over the last few months, the way lighting & shadows are handled, along with the fairly subdued color palette for stages, always leaves this game looking drab. I don't profess to be a fan of the aesthetic choices made by the developers, and admittedly it's really the Streets of Rage name that has me wanting something I'm not gonna get, but I wish the game's visuals (at least the colors) were brighter.

This game is up up-against the unofficial remake from more than a decade ago, which for all intents and purposes was Streets of Rage 4. and it had the "vibe" of the original 3, lets see how this compares to that version...

Man, I love Streets of Rage but this.... I'm just not a fan. Hopefully I end up liking it though. That voice acting just sounds bad. Blaze sounds like the pink ranger from the 90s Power Rangers show.

Not feeling it, sadly. I'll probably pick it up at some point to play through with my son, but footage I've seen so far is disappointing. Can't put my finger on it precisely, but I think it's the art style.

I just wish they'd announce a street date already! Game looks nostalgic and my soul is ready. Take me back to an awesome childhood, whores!

The art is good, but there's something off about it. Looks like flash animation. Should have went with pixel art or a 3D engine that emulates hand drawn sprites.

Some o y'all are smokin some shit reefer. Probably the same shit the people whining over the FFVII Remake. JK

Seriously though. This looks great! Put yourself in your 10 year old self's shoes for a second and Then look at that gameplay. It would blown your mind!

That's the way I look at it. Don't give me some horrible polygon work or shitty pixel art. Give me something that makes me feel like I'm playing a cartoon.

No, it would not if we already played other beat'em ups with a great pixel art. A game like Capcom's AvP was released in 1994 and it still looks better aesthetically for example.

short version of this post:

Streets of Rage 4 is to Streets of Rage as DmC is to Devil May Cry

No sprites no streets of rage,

Why waste a good IP on this spunk?
This a million times. That dumb ass transparent video they came out with that had 2 artists talking about their passion for the series was pretty much an attempt at "leave the poor developers alone they're trying" sentiment. They claimed the original games wanted to emulate an animated manga look (🙄) but couldn't due to the technology (they very well could have). They should've just made their own IP instead of butchering streets of rage.

When you can't let go of nastalgia. Put them side by side and act like blurry ass sprites look better than a clean drawn image. You clearly don't want a new game. Just play the original. This reminds me of the person in the RE3R topic that stated "no fixed camera no buy" lol.

And you guys are actually serious. :messenger_neutral:
Which is why they should've made their own thing instead of trying to shortcut and leech a built-in consumer base. Their art style probably would've lended better to a butchering of the Jet Set Radio IP.

Im a hardcore fan of the trilogy, i liked the design (Shiva design is neat), music and juggle gameplay.

Seens a natural evolution made with care!

You are wrong. It is not about nostalgia. It is about a great pixel art which works in the game. And there is more to it than art itself. For example fluid animation (more different sprite frames) makes it harder on eyes to focus on details and judge distance between all objects (characters, enemies, weapons, etc.). Another thing is a proper contrast between backgrounds and objects. In other words more is not always better but it is very hard to know where is a proper balance achieved developing it.

Anyways I do not think this game is going to be groundbreaking in beat'em ups genre. However it still can end up as a pleasant couch type experience. The key thing will be its gameplay in the end.

Regarding the new RE games. I am not a fan of them as well for various reasons. In short if I did not know anything about RE franchise at all, I think there are better games on the market already in comparison to the new ones. For example Dead Space series.

Really hate the design. Everything looks very weird.
While i would have favored pixel art, i'm not hostile to the drawn animated movie look...games like Castle Crashers or Cuphead had a great art design with that style.

SoR4, on the other hand, looks lije a poorly drawn cheap mobile game.
Anatomy is very wrong (chest 2x larger than the rest, arms bigger than legs, etc).

The series had great art design, it really was one of its strength...

Will this be getting a physical release? If so, for which consoles?

Pretty much. People whined like this when Wind Waker was announced. Now it's deemed one of the better looking games in the series.

Some folks are just bent on not liking this game. First they complained about the music, wanting Yuzo back. He comes back. Then they want characters like Adam again. They introduce Adam as a returning character. People just find things to whine about. I totally understand having an opinion about the art style. But as soon as people bring up how they're butchering the series or that they should've gone with the old look, it's pretty clear that it's all nostalgia-based complaining.

Initially, I wasn't sold on the new sprites. But, they grew on me and I'm liking what I see. I'm disappointed that there won't be any DLC for stages and characters but I'll still get it.

I'm not wrong. That's why I said "some" and not "all". I wasn't even addressing your post. You must not have read mine.

I thought that you are generalizing like in this sentence "But as soon as people bring up how they're butchering the series or that they should've gone with the old look, it's pretty clear that it's all nostalgia-based complaining. " So I answered to it.

You're right. It is generalizing. But it's still targeted at specific people. I know for some, it's about more than simply nostalgia. But you can usually tell by the way things are worded. Even in this thread. That's why I didn't quote you directly. Because you explained your reasoning and why it's not quite the same for you.

Looks like a phone game

I will pick it up because I am a huge SoR fan, but I am not feeling this. The music doesn't seem as good to me either, I miss that end of stage fanfare.

I think this gameplay from Game Informer actually shows the game a bit better

Personally i'm still a bit on the fence for some of the character design, but the animations look simply gorgeous and the drawings are incredibly good.
Also, you can see a bit some new gameplay ides that could be interesting.
Most importantly, from this video the rhythm of the game looks intact and respected. If they nailed this like it looks, the rest is all smooth sailing.

These are the same people who remade Wonder Boy: The Dragon's Trap and that game was a moving marvel and a love letter, so count me in.

The characters have anatomy issues, and animation doesn't look that great.
And that screenshake is terrible.

Wonder boy looked much better, imo.
I'll probably get it anyway as i'm a huge SoR fan but i'm not convinced (yet) that it can be even half as good as BKIII...

Aren't colors completely washed out?
From the parts that I skimmed through, I think it's because they applied some haze filter on the play space.

The HUD colours aren't affected, probably because it's overlaid on top of everything else and that colour saturation is probably what you want.

I can't wait for this. Ori should hold me over till this releases but im bummed about no 4 player online coop. Hopefully its patched in later.

Haven't been a fan since it was announced tbh. The art is bland and whichever way you put it, that was a huge reason the game lives long in the memory.

The music seems like the highlight and I dig the idea of bringing it back but it ain't vibing. Looks a lot like Borderlands x Streets of Rage.

This, good aesthetics are timeless. There's no reason to say it's better by default because it's newer when it comes to that.

Gameplay is a different matter, that can certainly improve and technically this does look better than the original (IMO).
