Struggling with boredom and can't even pick a game to play

I'm sorry you are feeling that way.

How is your sleep schedule? Is it random? You should try to have a decent sleep schedule, take a walk every now and then, do not stay too much time inside your house specially during your free time. Try to have a schedule to do things, don't to activities at night that might get your nervous or active, instead, read a calm book or listen to some relaxing music, both stimulate your brain in different ways. By taking a walk, even a small one you are exercising which is always good but you might see and listen different things. Find a good street or a park, don't go walk to a mall for instance.

Try to take good care of yourself. Take care of your skin, try to exercise a tiny bit. Remember, do not compare yourself to anyone! Ignore those fashion magazines and actors you see on TV, this is important because you don't need to compare to anyone in order to feel better, you just need to take good care of yourself. You can also try a different pair of jeans or a different shirt. If you can afford try to purchase a new set of clothes. Nothing too fancy, just something different you can find from a sale. Try to opt for something colourful and different from what you currently have in your wardrobe.

How is your diet? Food can affect your mood you know? Try to have some variety or try to go to a grocery store and buy different ingredients to try and make something different. Even if you messed up your dish you are boosting your creativity and your mouth is tasting new flavours.

How is your place? It can help to keep your things tidy and have a decent amount of light exposure as well, don't just put your room dark all day while watching TV or browsing GAF because the lack of light/sun can affect your mood as well. Try to keep things minimal, 2016 is just around the corner and some people feel more motivated to induce change on small things so consider going in a cleaning spree and remove all the material objects that you don't need as well all things that may just be clutter. You want to be surrounded by experiences, memories, art, plants or a good place to hangout and relax so don't have too much plastic objects or other materialist items, remember, sometimes, less is more.

You don't need to quit gaming, this is something that myself and more other good GAFfers experienced before, trying some different things may improve your life a little and then you will feel more motivated for playing or for doing other things. Having a huge backlog may not be positive as well so you could organize your list a bit. If you have a lot of consoles consider focusing on one or two, see if you have a big list of retail games that you are always thinking of finishing them "some day" but you know deep inside that you won't. Sell them, donate them, get that problem out and it will help you knowing what to play. If I have two games to choose it's always easy but when I have 50 I choose none and just do other things, many do this so you're not alone.

Talk to people, I understand meeting new people can be frighting sometimes but don't be afraid, don't push yourself too hard, okay? If you are feeling a bit lonely or sad send a PM to someone here, I'm sure there are plenty of good GAFfers in here willing to help with some advice or words. You can count on me and I'm sure you will find others as well.

I'm not sure if any of this helped but I just wanted to know that you are in a great community, people will try to help you and you always have some good folks to rant or vent if you need to. I understand depression might be harsh to counter and I see many good people being affected by it, so if you need someone to talk, talk to some people in here and don't get yourself isolated from the world. :)

Fantastic post.

The most I have ever enjoyed video games was after taking a break from most gaming between the ages of 16 - 20. I came back from my hiatus and played Half-Life 2, Resident Evil 4, and Metroid Prime back to back.

Play Civ 5, OP. It is unlike any game you've been playing recently and if you allow it to, it will suck you in for hours.

I take a break from gaming all the time. Sometimes I shift my focus towards movies and my Blu-ray movie collection. Lately I'm obsessed with music and expanding my collection there. Just bought myself a gift for Christmas - an ELO box set of all their albums for roughly 50 bucks.

Point is, gaming alone will burn you out quick. Toggle 'dem hobbies.

Ive been here for like 3 years now. Ill play a game every now and again, but when it comes down to it if I want a narrative games are woefully inadequate so ill just read a book. If I want stimulating imagery, games are generally woefully inadequate so I'll just watch a movie. When it comes to spatial stimulation, wow games are really damned good at that! Too bad they focus almost all of their effort nowadays on the former two rather than the latter point, so they often end up as boring halfhearted efforts that come across as insecure tripe from people who would rather be writing books or making movies but aren't good enough to do so thus gaming gets stuck with them.

Don't want to sound alarming other anything but the same happened to me during college and I also started to miss some classes. I was totally down and couldn't get myself to do anything really... Turns out I had a problem with my thyroid gland. A visit by the doctor confirmed it and I have to take a tiny pill ever since. But now everything is OK. Just make you could check for that if you are felling bad because it took me nearly have a year before I went. Thought maybe I could spare you some time. Happy Holidays

I've been feeling the exact same way.

I thought it was depression, but then I got Yoshi's Woolly World and Chibi-Robo Ziplash for Christmas and I've actually been playing them a fair bit.

I think the real root of the problem was that I just wasn't actually enjoying any of the games I had.

2 things come to mind.

You might need a break. If your not in the mood to play, don't play. Don't worry about it, you will prob want to play something again soon enough. It happens to me sometimes. I just watch a show on prime or something instead and after a few days of not thinking about it the desire to play something comes back.

Could also be the burdon of choice. You could just try randomly picking a game and then just play it. See if it grabs you after an hour or 2. If not try a different game. If nothing grabs you after a few games maybe try option 1 above. I also get this issue and I'm trying to work around it by not ever building to large a collection of games I "want" to play. I tend to have 1 online game I play when in the mood (which isnt often these days) and a single player game. I have a few more than normal in my list due to winter sales at the mo but I'm off work till the 4th so I have some time to clear a few of them.

I hope you find a way over you hump.

Sometimes ya just gotta explore new hobbies brother. Pick up a book, maybe start watching new movies? Work out more. Hell, maybe just try a genre you've never tried before.

You might have so much free time it's driving you crazy. Happening to me right now unfortunately as I desperately am trying to find a job as a new college grad :P

Amazing post.

I had the exact same thing a while ago.

Take a break. Do something else. It will come back eventually.

Oh and get rid of some stuff in your backlog, helped for me.

I don't know what my problem is...maybe it's depression because I do have problems with that, but ever since the winter break started from college, I was originally excited at the idea that I'd finally have some free time to sit and play some games in my catalog. I have quite a few ranging from some newer games that just came out in the past 2 months, to older games that I got on Xbox 360 and PS3 that I haven't had a chance to play yet.

Yet it's been at least a week since school ended and I haven't been able to pick a game to play...have spent most of my time just watching youtube, or old giant bomb videos, but every time I turn on one of my consoles, I'm just like...uggh... don't know what to play, and my eyes get drowsy. I just got Xenoblade Chronicles X for xmas also, and can't even bring myself to open the shrink wrap yet.

:( I don't know what is going on with me...I still love video games, because I played a bunch during the year that I had a lot of fun with, but I'm not really in the middle of anything right now, and picking something new is just proving extremely difficult for some reason. What sucks is I have such little interest in anything else either...I am such a boring person...no friends to spend time with really, so I don't even know what else to try and fill my time with. Just been either sitting on my computer refreshing gaf, or wanting to sleep the day away and it sucks.

Anyone have any advice for me because I'm really just bringing myself down going day after day like this.

hey op ignore some of these stupid posts especially that first one. i completely understand how you feel. i've been going through depression for many years and with that you struggle to do things you once enjoyed, right? it's a common issue.

i'm still struggling with it right now. although it's not just video games but also books. i keep buying so many things and as a result i have a backlog. for example, i bought the first witcher book back when 3 came out and i only just finished them all last week. so it took me 7 months to read them all. that's because i couldn't be bothered and struggled to even do it (and to be fair the books are rather terrible).

what i've found helps is starting off small. by this i mean playing a game that you can run through in no time at all or just play at short bursts. i've been playing Portal 1 + 2. those games are incredibly fun. i finished the first one in 2 hours and will probably finish 2 in less than 4-5 hours. i find that if you keep playing in short bursts it'll keep me coming back for more. especially if the game is short and you complete it then you get a sense of accomplishment so you feel i want to do that again! then you just move on to something a bit bigger. i do the same with books. when i feel that i'm struggling to get through something i just go read a short story. i have a doctor who book boxset of short stories that i can finish in about an hour. again there's that sense of accomplishment.

maybe that won't help you but i just want to share my experience in case it does :) also, i find that the hardest part is just doing it. i might think "i really can't be bothered playing anything" but once i get into the gameplay i just start having fun. it's just mental blocks. see what works for you.

best of luck :) don't let depression stop you doing what you enjoy. it's hard i know but fight it.

You have a lot of ghosts thoughts (aka worries) surrounding your mind and you just dont care about things as long as those thoughts are there bothering you. You need to clean them.

Be honest with yourself and sort out what's wrong with your life or the root of your problems, go to psychologist if you need help.

The thing is, if those problems you have are not under your control, just dont give a fuck and enjoy your free time, because it's free. You dont need a reason to care about the things you do in your free time. But you can also try to improve things on your life. Even if you dont get anything, you will feel less bad because at least you tried.

Anyways, dont worry too much, it's just a phase. You will get out eventually = )

I spent over a $100 during the Steam sale and started to play a f2p game.

I'm always bored of gaming and have so many unplayed games. Have not come up with solution yet either. Lately I have been settling with Netflix or similar. It's good to take a break every now and then.

Go for a run, bake a pie, read a book. There's a lot of interesting stuff to do and if it isn't games right now, that's okay. It's not like people are going to judge you a worse person or that your life will be poorer.

But if you're deadset on getting back into games... Animal Crossing. Buy a citrus rug, catch a zebra turkeyfish, and identify a stego skull. You'll be back in the saddle in no time.

I'm a little afraid of commiting to such a long game again, because earlier in the year I played Witcher 3 until I couldn't stand it anymore, I was super close to the end, but couldn't bring myself to play anymore because the game itself bored me so much. Sometimes a long game can be super un-fulfilling when there's too much content, because it can feel even worse if it doesn't amount to anything.

This is EXACTLY how I feel with Wind Waker right now. Most beautiful/charming game in existence yet I can't bother to finish it because its such a fucking bore! :(

I started playing Minecraft Story Mode today...not much, but it's something...lol Yay?

I do think there's something else fuckin with me right now, because I went from not getting enough sleep to sleeping all the time the past couple days. Always damn tired. Now I woke up at 1am, and will be up all night again.
