Stuck in an airport overnight, feels bad man

No way I'm sleeping in the airport all my shit will be gone for sure.

The hotel here is 250/night screw that

Here's the problem - I booked the flight on my AMEX card which is for work - if I call my personal MasterCard any chance they'll cover it? Or should I call the card I booked it with?

Bro hook me up man. I don't snore

The only thing open on this side of security is a Wendy's so I found a Sheraton lobby.

Which hotel is 250?!? There are several airports around Pearson

Expedia has a few for under 150, some under 100

Was on my way to Hawaii (was born there), and missed my connection in Phoenix because Phoenix Sky Harbor Airport is complete bullshit. I ended up sleeping on one of those rows of chairs, with my luggage wrapped so nobody could take it. But I'm paranoid.

Lost a day in Hawaii, got like 250$ in vouchers for my trouble.

...wait I'm going to Hawaii in a month

OHMYGODNO

And yeah, basically if the first flight was late, bitch at the airline. You'll get flight vouchers or at bare minimum, a hotel voucher.

I'm guessing you transferred from one airline to another in a different terminal? Otherwise each terminal is relatively tiny and almost impossible to not make a flight. But, yeah, if you have to travel between terminals, then that makes it bullshit. (they are now all connected by monorail).

Not overnight, but I was stuck in the Omaha airport for 8+ hours. Do you know what's at the Omaha airport? NOTHING. It's a dinky airport in a dinky city.

Every overnight issue I've had, they would put me in a hotel. Usually a crappy one though, but better than sleeping in an airport.

Missed a connecting flight due to Florida weather, Alaskan airlines bought me a flight on a delta flight business class. They really pulled through for me, I'll always have Alaskan airlines as my first choice.

Friend of mine was trapped in Nepal for days after the earthquake, slept on the floor of the Kathmandu Airport for two nights along with hundreds of other stranded travelers. No food for 48+ hours, shit overflowing in the toilets, garbage piling up everywhere, no air conditioning, not allowed to leave the building. Finally he forced his way onto a boarding flight and made it to Kuala Lumpur. He landed at LAX this afternoon, safe and sound.

But yeah, it could be worse, OP.

Damn.

1st world problems indeed.

I feel like an ass now

Idk I'm just at the Sheraton connected to the airport. That's what the starting rate on their site for tonight was.

I always stay 7 hours in the Dubai Airport on my flights, the key is how you travel, i usually stay in the First class lounge.

I only travel with Emirates.

What's your worst airport stories GAF? Make me feel better

Spring break in Japan (study abroad). Scheduled our flights months in advance on Peach (ghetto airlines) during a cheap Valentines Day deal. Went to the airport with 2 friends of ours who had an 8:30 flight while ours was at 7:05 and the first train left at 5am. Apparently its physically impossible to get to the airport from our train station in Osaka in under 2 hours and even if it was, we'd still have missed the plane since we would've had 5 mins to get through customs and get our tickets.

Anyway. Had to get new tickets which were 300-400 dollars. Didn't wanna drop the 200 a new reservation at the airport hotel would be, so we had to stay til our next flight which was AT THE SAME TIME. Otherwise the same thing would happen again (this was the only flight under $500 the next day). 24 hours with nothing to do on airport internet. Went to McDonalds like 18 times, had a mojito at Burger King. Tried out some coffee and some ice cream. Perused the book store (Japanese gossip girl) etc etc.

24 hours later we were on our merry way to Ishigaki.

I was briefly considering getting some last minute tickets from Kansai International to Hong Kong for Golden Week but I think I will reconsider

I slept overnight in the Phoenix Airport once after missing a flight. Found a relatively secluded corner, took off my hoodie to use as a pillow, put the strap of my carryon backpack around my leg to deter theft, and curled up and slept. It sucked, but sometimes you gotta do what you gotta do.

:(

You could have taken a cab to another airport, or found a cheaper one with an airport shuttle!

Eh my flight is at 655 and its already 12. By the time I found a place and checked in I would have maybe 4 hours...not sure it's worth it

Wow that's great. I'm not sure if there was flights from other airlines I could have made but I wasn't offered it in any case

Worst experience was getting to the airport 90 minutes before departure, checking a bag with 75 minutes left and then getting stuck in security for an hour. Literally run through the terminal. Made it to the gate 10 minutes before departure *I made it!!!*... NOPE! gate closes 15 minutes before departure, had to get the next flight 8 hours later (after making a scene about how I was on time and if they want people there 15 minutes before take off they SHOULD FUCKING MAKE THAT THE DEPARTURE TIME YOU FUCKS!) FUCK US AIRWAYS

I always imagined departure is when wheels lift off the ground. But sorry that happened :(

On my journey to Switzerland from Indonesia, they made us transfer planes in the Dubai airport, a changeover. It was like a 9 hours or so wait; the airport itself was fantastic but not *that* fantastic that I'd love to spend a 9 hours waiting there after flying all over from Indonesia.

The worst thing was I actually lost my passport there; that was most probably the most panicked I've ever been in my life. Thankfully by some miracle in the end I actually managed to find it back, but that was a scare I sincerely hope I'd never experience again in my entire life.

All in all it took about 16 hours of journey... and by the time I arrived in Switzerland they made me register first for the university (Glion) and I was supposed to be there during dinner at the campus (welcoming party or whatever) but I was just so tired I just slept like a dead man the entire first day I arrived in Switzerland, hahaha.

Long time ago my old man and I were coming home from overseas with a stop over at O'Hare airport and our flight was delayed overnight due to weather. It was just 4 hours until the early morning flight so we decided to just stay at the airport since we didn't want to miss that flight if we leave the airport for a hotel. Lo and behold the weather wouldn't let up and we didn't fly out until that late night. What sucked was they keep saying the delay was a few hours or so every damn time.

Hm...2 incidents tied for worst...I have flight anxiety so I need to literally be drugged up to sleep.

Flying to Düsseldorf from SFO, we boarded and as soon as I was on, took my standard dose of medication...2x ambien, 2x Xanax, and 2x Zzzquil. Needed to deplane due to engine not firing up - was struggling to stay awake in the terminal seeing unicorns prance around all the gate attendees and passengers and shit. Got the OK to re board and I was stumbling all over the place...engine stopped working again and flight got cancelled.

Stumbled over to United customer service and lined up to get a rebooking...waited 2 hrs struggling to stay awake and the lone service rep said it was her break time right as the person in front finished up, so I blew my fuse and bitched at her and a riot was about to start behind me. So she started to help me, asked for my info and fucking cancelled my entire itinerary for being an asshole (after patiently waiting without so much as a peep until she tried to take off on her break with a shit ton of passengers still waiting behind me). Had to get it sorted out and ended up from doing SFO to FRA to DUS changed to a nasty itinerary of SFO to IAH to DEN to EWR to FRA to DUS. Of course anxiety kicked in once I stepped onto the flights and was anxious for the next 24-32 hours or some shit. Drugs left in my system kicked in after landing in Düsseldorf, and stumbled to train. Fell asleep on train and overshot my station :-(

Was quite literally one of the worst airport / flying experiences I had.

On the flip side, I generally take a voluntary bump off a plane and get upgraded to business class somewhat frequently...recently got bumped to global first, was a nice experience so it's not always bad.

Did you miss is because your first plane was late?

I had a flight from China that was delayed and I missed my connection in LA to Stockton so I made the airline foot the bill on a hotel.

This happened to me. I was flying from Jamaica, but my flight was late to the connecting flight in Texas and I missed it. Stayed in a hotel for the night.

US Air is literally the worst airline. We had depositions up in Connecticut shortly before Christmas a few years ago. Our flight was routed from Hartford to DC for some reason with, I believe, another stop along the way before landing in Birmingham. We made it to DC with plenty of time to make our connecting flight, but another plane was at our gate. We sat on the runway for 45 minutes waiting for this one gate to open up, despite there being several other gates of similar size open that we could see from the runway. While we were waiting, we saw another plane push back from a gate and made a joke about how that was probably our plane.

Turned out, it was.

US Air had nothing available for several days due to holiday travelers. Delta could get us on a plane in two days. I can't remember what the other airlines reported back. We said, "fuck it," and rented a car. We left D.C. at 6:00 PM and made it to Birmingham by about 4:30 AM.

Fuck US Air.

Stayed overnight once at Houston because of bad weather. Second time the same thing almost happened again except I managed to make my connecting flight literally the last minute. I was so god damn exhausted and sweaty, my legs were on fire. Thank god that there were empty seats available to the person sitting in the middle was gone. I'm giving myself more time for connecting flights to avoid shit like that again.

Worst airport story was flying back to LAX from Panama City. Flight went behind schedule so they landed in Tijuana. They said it was because the pilots had hit their flying time limit.Since it was an int'l flight and the gates were closed, they tried to keep us on plane for an hour. People going bananas and they eventually kept us in a locked waiting area at the TJ airport and wouldn't let us leave since customs was home for the night. They refused some rich folks that wanted to take a taxi back to LA. Five or six hours later, they let us back onto plane and flew us home. Was on the local news. So terrible.

Last year while travelling to Budapest I had to pass thru JFK.

It was my first time going through JFK and I know now I should try to avoid it always.

Shit I thought only having 90 minutes for a connecting flight was tight but doable but you have to go through two security checks when transferring from a domestic flight to an international one... wtf I already did my international check from my originating airport.

I make it with about 30 minutes before boarding but for some reason my luggage didn't have time to make it... wtf not enough time? Worst part was that I had a 9 hour layover in Rome and I didn't find out until I got to Budapest. Luckily I had packed some of my clothes on my carryon but I still had to buy some clothes when I got to Budapest because my luggage didn't arrive to my hotel until a day before I was leaving.

Other than that I've done plenty of layovers, I really hate sleeping on airport chairs but if I know I'm gonna be stuck in an airport and can't leave I try to stay awake on the plane and sleep in the airport.

Although Incheon, South Korea is not a bad airport to get stuck in, in fact its one of the best airports for layovers. They provide free shower rooms, there's a in-terminal short term hotel for sleeping (not free), and you can take cultural bus tours of the city for a small price if your layover is long enough.

I got flight in september for Jakarta though that has two layovers in Tokyo on the arriving and return flight. Arriving flight gets there at 10:30pm and leaves in the morning and its 15 hours.... don't know if I want to book an expensive hotel just for that. But the return flight lands in the morning and leaves at night also 15 hour layover so I'm def going to take advantage of the time to roam around during the daytime.

Missed a connection and gotta wait 9 hours to fly out in the morning.

What's your worst airport stories GAF? Make me feel better

During the Blizzard of '96, they closed the airport (Newark, IIRC), shut down all transportation and all roads, stranding about 60 people inside for 2 days. Luckily, everyone was really chill about it, but that was mostly because a handful of college-age dudes broke into one of the restaurants and started making everyone food.

On the morning of the third day, a very surprised security guard showed up. Apparently, not only did they strand us all in the airport, but they had literally forgotten we were in there. They were not very happy about the vandalism and theft, but they didn't press any charges on anyone. And everyone also got free tickets for their current trip and comp tickets for 2 more trips anywhere in the US for the next year.

Still, spending 2 nights sleeping on airport chairs with 50+ disgruntled strangers, eating food out of vending machines, and praying the toilets and heating keep working was definitely not a fun experience.

Had a 20 hour layover at Narita (Tokyo) last year and my god it was awful. All hotels in the area were full and the only place I could find where the police allowed people to sleep was a bunch of hard ass benches right next to an escalator that played the same warning/safety message over and over and over. Got maybe an hour of sleep.

That Korea airport sounds awesome.

Man I'm feeling really rough right now guys I don't know if I'll make it. Coffee isn't helping

3.5 hrs until boarding

I would have went into the city and got a capsule hotel if it was that long. The problem with Narita is that its so freaking far from the actual city and access from it is pricey and sucks especially after the trains stop running.

Luckily my layover will be in Haneda a short ride into civilization.

only time I was ever stuck in an airport was back in the summer of 2001. I took the train heading to the airport with plenty of time but ended up stuck on there for over an hour because of some problem or what not. ended up arriving like 15 minutes after the flight had took off and I spent a night sleeping in a phone booth sitting straight. and this was way back when I don't have a smartphone. the kicker in the story is that I was in New York one month before 9/11 and I was flying out of JFK. had a pretty good time seeing the big apple and got to go up the top of WTC before it's gone.

Gotta sleep next to a power point bruh

Feels bad man... Do you get kicked out of airport? Or do you sleep outside?

Nah but the airport was pretty depressing, bunch of sad people trying to sleep on benches and some construction workers talking so loudly I can hear the unfortunate details of their conversation. so I moved to a hotel lobby.

Haha my bad I went and read thread... You went to drinking, well done you will laugh about it in a few days

I dont mind hanging with the sad people though after a long stop over people start cracking and you either in the struggle together and are nice to each other... Or you see some people snap

Watch out for boarding people are gonna have no patience for anyone lol I just had a flight cancelled on the weekend... It wasn't nine hours but extended our travel by 7... But it was after a wedding so that multiplied the struggles

No doubt. Ima knock some old ladies out cold to get on that fucking plane if I have to

If there's a baby beside me....so help me lord.

I got stuck at pearson for 12 hours due to missing my flight because I got put in the "detain this man and check his bags" line. Apparently something must have been up with my almost expired passport because they nearly made me miss my flight again the next day.

Anyway I just loaded up on snack foods, shuffled aimlessly around the "you're stuck at the airport" section where they have a shitty xbox 360 like station and the toys for kids, and actively avoided other humans because "oh my god, I just need to kill some time here, so let me just watch Prometheus on Canadian netflix until I pass out."

I did something similar. Arrived late, ran to the gate which is obviously miles from security. At this time they had heightened security so there was a second bag check approaching the gate. Shit. Barely make it to the gate in time.

*pant* 17:55 BA to Helsinki *pant*
Gate attendant: "sorry sir, this is the 17:50 Finnair to Helsinki"
Me: fffuuuccckkk

Only flight I ever missed. Stupid bloody airlines having two flights 5 mins apart, and code shared so both were BA *and* Finnair.

Bananafactory, you should be able to get compensation from the airline. Doesn't matter if a runway was closed - let the airline deal with that from the airport. Too late for a stopover hotel but get some money/vouchers

And be happy the internet and smart phones exist :)

I just got married and this couple were quite happy to push inbetween us to get off the connecting flight... I looked at them like you really wanna do this or wait 3 seconds to let my wife and I to leave together. People go crazy over the smallest shit haha I pray you are not next to the shitty travelers bruh

I got put in a 5 star hotel when our flight had to turn back about 45 minutes into the flight (fuel was apparently being quicker than expected)

Qantas were awesome about the whole thing. Fucking buffet yeah

I was stuck once at Naples airport for like 11 hours. Fucking easyjet. They announced a delay of 1 hour 3 times (for a total of 3 hours), then said fuck it and announced a delay of 5 more hours. The rage!!!!!
Funny thing is, Google now updated me about the 5 hour delay even before the airline announced. Its damned magic, man!

Now you're just making me angry bro. Not cool

I've only done two overnighters, and both went smoothly. The first was at SEA in 2008, since my flight back to SFO wouldn't leave until about 6AM. Before that, took a late train from Vancouver that got into town close to 10PM.

Another was at HND in late 2012. My flight to ICN departed at 6:20AM, so even from my centrally located Tokyo apartment, it would be cutting it very, very close from the first train. Domestic, 6:20AM would be no problem, but on international, it's not a safe bet, so I paid ~$12 to stay in an airport lounge until boarding time.

Called AMEX. since its a corporate card their regular customer service can't see what benefits I'm eligible for and the corporate office isn't open until the morning.

Not gonna pay 250 for a hotel on the chance it will get reimbursed but thanks for the suggestion guys.

Pics?

Unfortunately no. It was about 10 years ago, right before the camera and cell phone had babies.

It wasn't an epic fort, but it was definitely enough to seem strange in an airport.

I missed a connecting flight in Chicago due to technical errors on my first plane. The next flight out wasn't until the following morning so United put me up in the O'Hare Hilton, gave me some meal vouchers and bumped up my ticket to business class. As if that wasn't enough to make me happy, the airline gave me a $100 voucher for a future flight a couple weeks later. All in all it was a good missed flight experience. I think it all depends on why you missed the flight. Since my flight was missed due to technical errors, United was 100% at fault so they had to make up for it.
