Study: Four video games share 65% of viewing time on Twitch

Wow, I never realized so many people like to watch other people playing video games. It kinda kills the point of video games.

It does?

Shit, then I guess spectating sports matches or any other activity marginalizes the core activity as a result.

Stop watching Football, go out there and play Football you yahoos!

On-topic: I was 3/4 for the most popular games, haven't messed around with Hearthstone much at all so didn't figure its popularity regarding all this, but makes sense.

This makes me feel completely alienated from a significant segment of the gaming community, because I have no interest in playing any of those top 4 games, much less watching them. I don't understand the appeal of watching Dota and LoL, as I find them really boring to watch. And it just boggles my mind that people watch Hearthstone.
Hearthstone is fun to watch because the split second decisions are spread across a minute, allowing everyone to try and guess the best next action. The whole chat is constantly abuzz with people coming up with ideas between the memes. There's a very communal feel to a lot of the streams, with the streamers regularly entertaining the ideas of chat and the whole atmosphere feels like the group is in it together. Also, I find you can really learn a lot about making plays in the game, since everything is evenly paced, whereas a lot of the skill in other games is less directly translatable due to a heavy portion of it being based on your ability to efficiently manage a group and lightning reflexes. Lastly, there is just enough RNG and flashiness to constantly entertain the viewers.

I'm honestly surprised in Minecraft not being some streaming juggernaut on Twitch. Do the kids just prefer all their content as editted YouTube videos?

Leagues numbers are honestly pretty scary. That game never seems to lose its viewership despite all of its MOBA genre competition.

CSGO's growth has been absolutely impressive.

Shame ESL seems intent on trying to own it all for themselves.

That WESA nonsense was absolutely embarrassing. I wish Valve actually gave enough of a fuck to clamp down on their bullshit.

I think that Overwatch is going to work it's way into this list.

The Overwatch beta itself seemed to be propped up as a flavor of the month game. It will need a great esports push by Blizzard to be viewed by lots. Chances are its doomed to sit next to Heroes of the Storm.

Yeah, it's even weirder to imagine people sitting around posting online about video games rather than playing them too.

Well, I don't post on GAF when i'm at home. I come here during downtime at work, lunch breaks and during the good ol' commute back home.

I think there's a reason why the top 4 games are all online PC multiplayers (with no iterations). People like to watch how other people play because they want to learn certain techniques, or how to do certain things, maybe they follow matches between teams from their country vs an overseas team.
Besides, everybody has a PC, the top4 games run well on almost any pc... they are today's WoW.

"As Gamologo said, a lot of major actors in the videogame industry are completely absent from the Top 10, such as Nintendo, Sony or Electronic Arts."

What competitive games are Nintendo, Sony, or EA putting out? Splatoon, Uncharted 4 MP, Battlefield, Battlefront. Yeah, don't see them getting into the Top 10 consistently. Plus, Battlefield doesn't seem to have much of a tournament scene.

I disagree, Heroes was going into an oversaturated market. There is no polished and friendly class based shooter out there. TF2 is impenetrable and refuses to make good MM. CS:GO is completely different and actually compliments it quite nicely. Quake Live is sadly dead.

I will be shocked if OW isn't a staple along with the other top 4 after 12 months. It's really down to how well blizzard supports the game.

In the grand scheme of things? Not really. Twitch also recently introduced a rule that you can't just open crates for hours on end anymore.

Interesting. Why would Twitch care? Does the same apply for opening card packs in Hearthstone?

Because actual fans of CS were tired of their game being populated by children entertainers who never play the game but just play some shit virtual lottery where nobody wins.

Guess I don't understand how MK is more popular

I thought offline and single player content were for scrubs who couldn't git gud
MK is pretty much dead on Twitch though. For example, at the moment of this post it has 222 viewers.
SFV on a common day is about where USF4 was, if a bit higher still, and is usually the most viewed fighting game when there are no competitions.

Do you watch any competitive video games?

Fighting games. And I can at least understand why people would watch shooters. But I don't get watching MOBAs and card games.

The fuck? Don't lump me in with him. What I said wasn't even remotely similar to his dismissive "Why would people watch video game?" attitude. I said that I don't find a couple types of games interesting to watch.

I watch games all the time. I watch a lot of LPs, some fighting game tournaments, and when AGDQ happens I usually have it running pretty much all week. There are just some games that I find really dull to watch, and it's bizarre to me that those games are the most popular games for other people watch by a significant margin.

i don't get why anyone thinks there is really a "gaming community" to begin with, when lots of people who play the biggest games in the world play only those games and probably don't think of themselves as gamers. there's a league community and a dota community, but both of those have very little to do with the rest of the industry.

Hearthstone is a great game but I'm really surprised that so many people are willing to watch others play it.
I would always catch my little brother watching hearthstone streams and it was always bewildering to me. I mean card games are cool to play but to watch, man, I don't get it. Yeah I know Poker has a tv thing but I think that's boring too tbh.

It's not bizarre if you think that those games are far, FAR more popular than any fighting game. I find soccer super dull but hey, billions of people love it.

As a parent of two kids (5 and 7) who watch (way too much) minecraft YT videos (and yes, thats a pretty standard age for viewing, every kid my kids know watch MC YTers), its not that Twitch streams are not potentially something they'd like to watch, but I think parents are not exposing them to the streams, we can't control the content as well as we can control the pre-edited videos the major Youtubers make.

The big youtubers in MC are pretty clearly aware that children watch, and are very very good at keeping the content completely appropriate. A live stream being done by anyone is bound to slip in some words I dont want them to hear, or some content I dont want them to see. Controlling their YT subs (my kids use my account to watch stuff) is far more effective.

Thats my take on why streams arent a 'kid thing' yet.

Unfortunately for english speakers, most of the time the top two rows of Dota 2 streamers are russians. Sing, rtz, black, either don't stream at all or when I can watch them. I'm left with admiralbulldong, merlini, and waga mainly.

Dammit. I saw the headline and tried to guess - I got LoL, DOTA, and CSGO right, but I missed Hearthstone. Don't think I ever would have come up with that.

people watch Hearthstone? that is... so weird. I guess looking for CCG strategy or tips.

in 2016 people enjoy watching videos on their phones of other people playing a digital version of a paper card games while talking about it. it's like an onion.

why would u watch it if 3 of those are free to play and one of them can easily obtained for less than 8 bucks. just play it yourself Kappa

Yup.

It's not catching up to MKX. That moment is gone.

Yep.

Seems the entire theme of SFV is "don't worry it'll catch up" to a great amount of people. Whether that's lack of content, sales, word of mouth, now views...like that needs to be the tagline if they come out with a complete edition.

"Street Fighter V: Catch Up Edition"

that's great but in 15 years those games will all be dead and one game will still be getting 100k viewers:

I wish I could look at a Twitch stream without a pasty nerd in then corner. Or is there an option to turn off the webcams?

OT: makes sense, same with sports.
