stupid question about how banning works in GAF

It's a joke.

Is a timed ban automatic? Or has a mod got to manually let the user log back in?

Has anyone ever come back from a perma ban?

Yeah, my recollection is that EviLore said he undid a bunch of Dragona's bans near the end.

I've wondered stuff about banning as well but never made a thread im fear of a mod saying, "I'll show you first hand!"

I saw a thread about 3 months ago about the history of bans in GAF. That was when I was in a transition phase if you will. And I always wanted what you suggested or even more, ask for a complete list of bannable offenses. After reading that very entertaining thread, I've come to realize, when in doubt, just lurk. I know how I am, I write off the cuff. Can't do that around here. Maybe it'll teach me to become a better internet writer.

I have, twice. Although that was in the early to mid 2000s. Just the past few months ive been banned twice for wading into gaming forum, although since the mods affixed troll to my name a few years ago people generally ignore me....

Oh i see, it is just that some forums ask for donations to help cover the costs from time to time & i thought that GAF Gold might be something similar, people who help out get a couple of additional benefits.

Good sites are hard to find.

It's not a joke. It's a filtered subforum for select (usually rather active) users, going by what someone has said in the past. Probably not something all that amazing, but yeah.

Of course because of its urban legend status people treat it like a joke with vague comments. But I find responses like that annoying, so there you go.

I wonder how many bans are handed out on a daily basis. Also, who do I pay to lift a ban early?

Would like to see a ban report thread, just for educational purposes. "Banned |OT| stuff you ought not do". Kind of like a police blotter. People would just endlessly question the decisions though, I can see why it isn't there.

I think that something like "member was warned/banned for this post" under the post is more effective. A thread like that is like a shame thread, should be avoided.

This question may seems stupid but i've always wondered, if you get permabanned can't you just make a new account? Or is that considered an alt?

I believe your Email account gets blacklisted so it is impossible to make a new one .

If a new account was all that is needed to post back here the same repeat offenders would come back time and time again thereby making perma's useless .

Threads only go up to 20,000 posts now. Who has the time?

Yeah we should have a public shaming area for bannings. Doesn't have to be an open thread either, just a place were we can see when/why someone has been banned.

Yet it works fine for Something Awful's leper colony.

I think if it was there, there would be a lot less banning people for different opinions going on. I really think that's what my last ban was from. A mod just came into a thread where two groups were having a discussion (not even heated) and banned everyone on one side of it. The Sylvester Stallone lobs a racial slur thread. http://www.neogaf.com/forum/showthread.php?t=716576 Some people seemed to get banned just for saying they couldn't make out the word being used.

The reason given for mine was simply "No excuse" I'm not sure what that was about. (No excuse for Sylvester saying a racist slur? In that case, who said there was?) And we're not allowed to know who bans you, so we can't ask.

The problem with this is then it will lead to people posting 'She was banned for that? Come on, it was clearly a joke wtf...', then the thread turns to a bitch fest about the mods till the next ban, rinse and repeat.

I kinda like having to look a post history and guessing which one did the user in. It's good training for Detective GAF™.

Edit: Ah, you suggested a closed thread as well. Thank God reading comprehension fail isn't bannable. Er, right?

Every time I've been banned I've seen people do this and they're always wrong. Most people seem to just think the latest post is what gets people banned when often (for me at least) it comes about 30-45 minutes after I made the post that got me in trouble.

I think the moderators would argue that outright banning consumes less time and resources. Clicking on the red button is far more easier than writing out a caution.

Ya, sometimes it can be the next day and the poster has 20 or so posts after their idiotic one.

In your case, I find it faster to just Google 'Derrick01 graphic console bullshit'

How do I find out about stuff besides how banning works? I read the TOS, but I'm also wondering how to graduate from junior member status to I guess regular member status? Also any other need to know stuff? I feel like there is something obvious I missed that explains everything.
