Back in the Street Fighter 2 heyday, there was this one semi-regular at my arcade who would always pick M. Bison. He might throw out the odd aimless kick once in a while or slide, but most of the time he concentrated on walking backwards for several seconds so he could slam the joystick forward with fierce punch and do the torpedo. Whenever he did this, he'd yell, "PAY THE PIPER!" That was his entire play style, and he never seemed to improve. Invariably, he'd be beaten in short order by anyone who played him.
That's not the stupid part.
One time I was playing as Zangief and this guy's turn came up. So he picks M. Bison as usual and starts walking backwards at the beginning of the round. He does the torpedo. "PAY THE PIPER!"
I lariat.
"Aw man!"
He starts walking backwards again. "PAY THE PIPER!" Lariat. "AW MAN!" "PAY THE PIPER!" Lariat. "AW MAN!" "PAY THE PIPER!" "AW MAN!" "PAY THE PIPER!" "AW MAN!"
"YOU WIN! PERFECT!"
By this time the other regulars are trying to stifle their snickering.
Round 2 was a carbon copy of round 1.
The sad thing was, not only did the guy not even consider abandoning his strategy, he didn't even seem to grasp the fact that Zangief's lariat would always win against Bison's torpedo. He just seemed baffled that his ultimate move was never landing a hit, but he just kept on trying hoping that it would work.
