As someone whose native language isn't English. I always watch everything with subtitle if I can. But I know some people hate subtitle so I can turn it off if need be. I just find it easier to catch the subtle stuff with it on.

As a non-native English speaker I always watch the English version with the English subtitles on.

I was surprised when I found out that some people had trouble hearing the dialogue in Interstellar, Mad Max: Fury Road and parts of Final Fantasy XV -- I always had the subtitles to rely on if I didn't understand dialogue, so I hadn't realized that sometimes the voice track just isn't mixed well compared to the music track.

It's funny because I always turn them on for games but never watch movies or TV with subtitles. Maybe I'll try them out and see because there's plenty of conversations that are indistinguishable.

I always think I should have them off in games, for maximum immersion.

But there's inevitably something about the 5.1 mixing where dialogue will try to come out of a rear speaker and end up fairly junky.

I don't get why so many people seem to play games in their native language with subtitles on but would never watch a film like that. The only reasons I can conclude are terrible voice acting or scripts OR most likely bad sound mixing make it a necessity so as to not miss vital info.

But even in English, a foreign language I understand, I don't mind the added text to read more clearly what is being said. Easier to keep the volume down. Unless it's subtitles for the hearing impaired then nevermind. Descriptions of sound effects is a little too much

I watch everything at home with English subtitles, TV shows and movies.
Exception if it's in Swedish or Danish I'll use Norwegian subtitles.

If I am at the cinema you get Norwegian subtitles as default which I hate so I don't go there much.

Same answer. Yeah, most of the time if it's just me regardless of language. I make exceptions for comedies depending on familiarity.

This. Never, ever, ever subtitles unless the film was originally in another language. I want to see and hear the actors' performances, not read the script.

Since English is my second language I've used subtitles all my life and grown so accustomed with it that I don't even notice that I am reading them. They are just as naturally imbedded in the movie for me as when I watch a movie without subtitles. But with subtitles I will always hear/see what they're saying even when they slur the lines, speak with a weird accent or the background sound being too loud when they talk. It also helps me with reducing spelling mistakes and increasing my vocabulary.

Like most normal people (I assume?), I only use subtitles when I'm watching a movie where they don't speak English.

And even then, if I've seen it before, I like to leave the subtitles off for a more pure experience.

I'm deaf, so yes. Subtitles all the time. I wish theaters have a nicer option though. I just rent movies instead or netflix it later... the hard part is avoiding all the fucking spoilers. :\

It's just so much easier when playing or watching something late, or with people around to be able to read what is going on in quiet scenes.

Hate them unless it is in a non-English language. If they are on during an English language movie I just end up staring at them and reading the whole movie despite Them speaking English.

I have asked other people and they say they also end up reading the subtitles for no good reason if they're on even when the movie is in English

Movies/series: 50/50 (with English movies), depends on if I'm tired, have to keep the volume down or have difficulty understanding certain accents. When I think about it, I sometimes do the same with Dutch movies, and Dutch is my native language.

I just saw this in Horizon 10 minutes ago.

I use subtitles when working out in my home gym and any movie/TV show with heavy accents. I have a tough time understanding English with heavy accents. I used to work with French people who spoke proper English but with the strong accents they might as well have been speaking French to me. Almost every other coworker could understand them but my brain couldn't figure it out.
