Suicide-Age: Any real reason not to do it?

I'm quitting a job and today is the last day I'll see the suicidal security guard that works there. He's told me that he's tried to kill himself a few times in the past, and he said last night that he wouldn't be surprised if he tried to kill himself again pretty soon. Also, he's a polytheist (his patron god is Cernunnos) and he believes in ritual suicide and reincarnation. As far as I can tell there's no reason for him to kill himself according to his beliefs, so there's no real reason I could give him to not kill himself. (Aside from emotional pain caused to people he knows.)

Anyone have anything good?

I dunno, but if he's gonna do it tell him to do something cool like eat a shit ton of popcorn kernels and then sit in a sauna or something.

people who are actually, seriously considering suicide don't go around announcing it.

your suicidal security guard is probably just "cry for help" security guard.

Doesn't he enjoy anything out of life? Anything at all?

Suicide can be messy and leave you, alive, but in a worse situation that you were in before.

I'd always be curious about the next big event in history, the next big thing in terms of culture or product. But maybe that's just me.

dude, if he indeed wants to kill himself, atleast have some hot mansex with him and tell us how it feels to take it up the choco-express.

Better safe than sorry. Those cases will develop into real suicide cases given enough time.

Suicide can often be devastating to people around you. It can ruin and scar parents and lovers lives forever. People have responsibilities to those that love them.

Tell him to stay alive, if for nothing else, to see if Bon Jovi's next album is crappy country again...or just crappy crap.

go to work with a pair of gloves, put them on during your last day and attack him from behind. Start strangling him, if he fights back just keep doing it harder.. just before he is about to die let go. He obviously doesnt want to die, and he will realise this and appreciate the lesson you taught him. If he doesnt fight back, be thankful you were wearing gloves.

Well I gotta take off for work not and you guys haven't given me any good reasons, so congratulations, you just killed an innocent security guard. I'll post pictures of his grieving mother.

People who want to commit suicide do it; they don't talk about it. The ones who talk about it are basically crying out for someone to pay attention, and help them with whatever's led them to the idea to begin with.

You won't care about any of that when you're dead. :/

Also, to those who think that really suicidal people don't talk about it, that's patently false. Not everyone who talks about it goes through with it, but many many people actually do.

I've always felt really, it's a person's own life so they should be allowed to do with it what they please. The one reason I can think of to not kill oneself would be.. why not just live? We're all gonna die anyway. Why not just see how things turn out. =p

We are the reason.
Introduce him to the joys of GAF.

It'll only worsen matters. About the only thing changed will be a tombstone that reads "He was only two days away from a tag. Permabanned, but never forgotten."

That post took a surprising turn.

:lol This thread is awesome.

Just remind him he needs a dramatic change in life and give him ideas of how to do it. It could be as easy as suggesting therapy, or as complex as moving. Make him do something different. ...Like giving it to you in your choco-express.

Ok so let me see if I'm following you correctly here; you get drunk, take out some matches and light homeless people on fire? Works for me.

As to the OP, if you really think he's going to kill himself then maybe you should alert the authorities, (depending on your social and political views)

Otherwise toss him a copy of Being & Nothingness and let him figure it out himself.

after doing some serious soul searching, really the only thing that keeps us alive is an illogical, instinctual prerogative.

life only gets worse the longer you're in it, due to continued emotional attachment and the fact that you become set in routine.

in fact, the only real liberation and show of individuality is to take your own life rather than suffer through something which only may get better.

"things can't get worse from here" is a lie you tell yourself to maintain your sanity.

things can always get worse.

caveat: i have been drinking and i have been reading some lord byron.

Introduce him to a really hot girl that he would've never thought he would have a chance with.

Give him a copy of Atlas Shrugged?

ah, the twisted irony of making his friends and loved ones wish he'd killed himself once he becomes a randroid.

i salute your style, sir.

The people that are saying that people who talk about it don't do it are wrong, by the way. I work in the field and a lot of suicides are people who talked about it beforehand, sometimes obsessively. It's a serious myth that needs to be debunked. If they are talking about it, take it seriously and get them help.

Or, maybe he doesn't kill himself.

I love how randroids are worse than christians on the internet, though.

Tell him to wait until the Spice Girls reunion tour.

But seriously...I dunno. That guy needs help. The first thing I would do for a suicidal friend is call a hotline or something.

There's 6,000,000,000+ people in the world.

The world will survive if some people kill themselves.

I think that you should leave the world better than going into it. So if you plan on contributing nothing in society, it is better just to eat lead instead.

This is totally false.

edit:

http://www.save.org/prevention/misconceptions.html

"People who talk about suicide won't really do it."

Not True
Almost everyone who commits or attempts suicide has given some clue or warning. Do not ignore suicide threats. Statements like "you'll be sorry when I'm dead," "I can't see any way out," -- no matter how casually or jokingly said may indicate serious suicidal feelings.

http://www.ace-network.com/suicmyths.htm

MYTH
Young people who talk bout suicide never attempt or complete suicide.

FACT
Talking about suicide can be a plea for help and can be a late sign in the progression toward a suicide attempt. Those who are most at risk will show other signs apart from talking about suicide. If you have concerns about a young person who talks about suicide:
- Encourage them to talk further and help them to find appropriate counseling assistance
- Ask if they are thinking about making a suicide attempt.
- Ask if they have a plan.
- Think about the completeness of the plan and how dangerous it is. Do not trivialize plans that seem less complete or less dangerous. ALL suicidal intentions are serious and must be acknowledged as such.
- Encourage the young person to develop a personal safety plan. This can include time spent with others, check-in points with significant adults, plans for the future.

Don't perpetuate serious, dangerous myths like this. When you don't know what you're talking about it's much better to just keep your mouth shut.

I had a friend who made suicide jokes for months.

We just treated it as a joke, especially since he was destined to be a professional baseball player or at least D1 college baseball.

Turns out, one day, he went through with his jokes.

Why do people commit suicide? I never get it, you're gonna die eventually, why rush it?

Because their lives are causing them enough pain for them to want to kill themselves? It doesn't get more complicated than that.
