Amazing marketing, great OST and that's pretty much it to be a huge success, terrible movie though.
As Kswiston pointed out above, this movie has had really good legs, which can't be chalked up to marketing or OST (Well who knows), it has to have some type of solid WOM.

I mean this is the 7th weekend and its holding amazingly well. ANd near the upper half of comic book movies this late in its run.

Since Iron Man 1, the only superhero films to made more than Suicide Squad's current WW gross without China are the two Avengers films, the two Dark Knights, Iron Man 3, Civil War, Batman B Superman, and Deadpool.

So 4 Iron Man, 3 Batman, and a Deadpool film.

Deadpool and BvS (minus China), will only end up $20-30M ahead at that.

I don't know how anyone could have expected a much better result for Suicide Squad than the one it ended up with.

Yeah, like we can talk about how much better it could have done with China and the likes, but I honestly can't imagine many pegged it for this much.

It's DC's best non-Batman film ever (Yes, I realize he is in this for like 30 seconds, but hardly a focus on the marketing/promotion)

This film swore me off the DC CU until I hear great things about one of their movies. I honestly can't understand the small group of gaffers who defend this piece of shit movie.

Somebody really needs to grow up, there is no need to belittle a movie for its success, respect it for what they set out to do and succeeded doing.

I do respect it for making that much money. I wasn't being sarcastic in saying congratulations. It's still a piece of shit movie.

Good marketing can get movies that aren't very good to big places. Over the summer, I've heard alot of my friends talk about their excitement for SS and after it came out most of them liked it so the movie must've really struck a chord with people.

DCEU's first "good" movie will crush the buildings

While this might indeed happen, the whole "DC properties are so stronk even when the movies suck!" idea is a little misguided. A lot of it has to do with the strength of the brand, yes, but much of it is also due to the strength of the genre. Whether diehards want to admit it or not, the BO performances of the DCEU owe a substantial amount of their success to Marvel continuing to grow the genre's popularity, just like the MCU has the Nolan trilogy, Raimi Spider-man, and X-men films to thank for laying much of its groundwork with the mass market.

Any doubts about this should be erased the second you look at the tepid performances of Batman Begins and Superman Returns. Both of those movies came out at a time when the superhero genre was growing but still a fraction of what it is today and at a time when both movie IPs were at a low point. Begins only made $374M WW and is far superior in quality compared to the average superhero movie and stars friggin BATMAN. So no, it's not that DC properties are that much more influential on the pop-cultural zeitgeist, you also have to consider the genre's growing popularity.
