Summer of Arcade 2010 Dates and Prices

Definitely getting Limbo. I know people are disappointed in Castlevania's low-budget approach, but I've been wanting someone to do a co-op Metroidvania style game for ages. So I think I'll be getting that one too. I'll also pick up Lara Croft if one of my friends also gets it, cause I love me some co-op action.

Monday Night Combat looks like a very professionally put together product, but do I really need another shooter?

If that were Arctic Thunder, we might be talking since I have a huge nostalgia boner for Arctic Thunder arcade, otherwise :P

Deathspank should be on this, it could use the advertisement, looks so, so good. Loot hack + classical adventure game dialogue panels. So great.

Shooters seem to do pretty well on the 360. So maybe there's a chance that the game will actually have an online community.

Castlevania HoD and Limbo seem like locks for me, but I'll wait to play the demos for all before actually biting on those and the others. MNC isn't a straight up team melee/shooter game, though, is it? I thought it was supposed to be some sort of mix of DoTA and TF. Thank goodness for demos.

Yeah, that's a pretty accurate description.

What is DoTA?

1200 each :/

the problem there is that if I buy a 2100 points card I can only afford 1 game from that list! And I can't afford to buy more points on top any time soon.

Good thing I still have a few points set aside for a rainy day eh?

Monday night combat and hydro thunder for me, that's all.

I rarely ever buy XBLA games for $15 mainly because you can find a lot of full retail games for around that price. The value just isnt there for me unless the XBLA game is SPECTACULAR which is rare.

Another great summer for xbla games.

I plan on getting Hydro Thunder and Tomb Raider (maybe Limbo), but I need to get through more of my backlog by the time they come out.

So you'd do that for something for $10 but not $15? That's kind of...weird.
You'd pay a dollar for a Snickers bar but not four dollars? That's kind of weird.

I know you have to defend everything even remotely connected to MS for some reason, but you really can't understand why something 35% cheaper has more of a chance of being impulse bought? Come on, Benjamin, you're smarter than that.

1200 is always a tougher sell for me than 800. No definite buys this summer, but I'll try everything as always. Most likely buys are Blacklight, Deathspank, and the Yu-Gi-Oh game whenever that comes out

What if he's stuck at a proprietary amusement park and there is no competition for his Snickers bar money?

I know you have to break out the inane message board jousting, but all he said is that it's weird. Would have gone with stupid though. Impulse buying is inherently stupid.

The sales seem to show the prices are too high to soon, a whole tonne of more recent released games have been on sale quickly after recently (just now Afterburner).

This is the better reply. I know some people have said the production values have gone up, and I don't disagree. Yet while they do sell, it's obvious with so many sales over the past year that not everyone's all in at that price point. They get a big splash during the initial week or two, but then it seems they die off. Hence all the sales.

The other thing is now with so many bigger downloadable games going multiple platform Summer of Arcade has a bigger chance to be hit and miss since MS likes to try and promote exclusives during the deal. You could easily make a stronger lineup than this IMO, but they just don't want to promote the multiplatform stuff if they don't have to.

Personally my most wanted downloadable game is Might and Magic: Clash of Heroes. Hope we get that asap when the summer of arcade is over.

Yup, the mix is shifting. I'm finding the kind of bite-sized gaming I used to find in $5 XBLA titles can be found in some of the better Indie games now. XBLA content seems about half way between retail and where it started, now.

(You can trace the price increases on a lag from when the XBLA size cap was lifted in stages as well. More content = higher prices. There's certainly some games that push the price:content ratio, but it goes both ways as well; some games are a steal for the price.)

Yep, I think it's awesome how indie games are rising up to fill the "cheap game" void.

And the other defender arrives...
It's no more stupid than thinking $5 doesn't make a difference to people. Doesn't mean the game will flop of course.

Impulsive actions are not inherently stupid, but they are usually based on very rough calculating that only takes immediate and/or surface facts into account. They're certainly not well-thought out, but they aren't stupid.

So I'll put the question to you, since you've decided to ride in his steed: do you think it's weird/stupid to think something is worth buying at $10, but not $15? How about thinking something is worth buying at $50, but not $75? I mean, by that logic, might as well price everything even higher, because only stupid people make distinctions between prices!

Limbo's the only must-buy on there for me. No interest in Hydro Thunder or Monday Night at all personally. I would have impulse bought Castelvania at 800, but at 1200 I'm going to be taking a close look at the demo. I'm intrigued by Tomb Raider, but need to play a demo first regardless of price.

For me personally this is the weakest summer they've had.

Limbo, July 21: This black and white puzzle platformer will draw you into its surreal world.

Limbo's an insta-buy for me. I'll wait and see on the rest.

And for all the complaints about $15 games - last year Trials HD and Shadow Complex were worth at least that, if not more. When these games are done right, they are a better value and better entertainment than the $60 boxed variety.

These downloads aren't tiny experiences anymore like at the start of the gen, and have been re-priced accordingly. We'll see if these games are worth it.

As many people, I'll get Limbo and wait to see the other ones by myself.

I'm shocked that Hydrophobia isn't in this list. :(

Summer of Arcade 2008: 2/5 games were 1200 points (Braid and Castle Crashers)
Summer of Arcade 2009: 3/5 games were 1200 points (MvC2, Trials HD and Shadow Complex)
Summer of Arcade 2010: Every game is 1200 points

I can't wait until Summer of Arcade 2011 when they start sneaking in 1600 point games. :P
I came in here to post this. The more the price raises, the less I buy.

Trials HD is a tough act to follow.

The problem is, i'm still in the camp that likes physical media because of two things:

1) sales
2) trading in a game if i don't like it, especially not enough to keep it

You keep increasing the prices of something i'm going to be stuck with if after an hour i tire of it, i'm less likely to buy it.

Hydro Thunder/Tomb Raider are mine! Hydro Thunder is worth more than 15..IMO this is a steal! Not interested in those other games at all

Surface fact #1: I have no interest in game.
Surface fact #2: It's only $10.

Yea, not stupid.

Or in my case:

"Hmm. my friends are playing Castlevania..... kinda cool... .it has online co-op... alright, let's do it!
:checks: Oh wait, nah, not for $15, sorry buddies." (and Iga :( )

I hope Monday Night Combat is good. I was wondering why a more zoomed down perspective DoTA game hadn't emerged yet.

The Tomb Raider game doesn't have any RPG elements does it? I think that is some real missed potential there :/. Maybe i'll get it if the demo is quite good.

Maybe the quality of the games have gone up, and the price is justified? Crazy idea, I know.

If all of those games are better than Bionic Commando: Rearmed and Geometry Wars 2, I'll eat my XBOX.

anyone else waiting for the Deadliest WArrior game? GT compared it to Bushido Blade which means I must get it :(

I'm looking forward to it, looks like good fun, and it's suppose to be only 800 pts. Also suppose to come with a Samurai Avatar outfit, for that matter.

Really wish KoF 2002 UM would be announced to come out before Summer of Arcade.

I still don't get the love for Limbo... it just has that "Floaty puppeteer animation" look to it, for me, which makes it kinda cool to look at, but... I just don't see the excitement to PLAYING it.

Conversely, Castlevania has great classic animation, and looks really fun to play because.. it's Castlevania! I REALLY wish they'd have given all characters as much color depth as Alucard, and I they will in different color palettes. I wish it was all bumped up a few resolution notches (KoF XII quality pixel art + Castlevania artstyle and design = Dream Castlevania), but I still am looking forward ti it!

Monday Night Combat looks to combine 3rd person shooting and melee better than most commericial retail games (Crackdown 2 looks archaic compared to what they've shown of this), so even though shooters aren't my fav, games with this much personality and care of animation ARE.

Everything else looks solid, but will have to demo to see how much I care for. Love the fact that Laura should offer same-system Co-Op (WHY DOESN'T CASTLEVANIA?!?!?!), and Hydro Thunder looks like a perfect compliment to things like Outrun and Afterburner; awesome arcadey speed games.

My only problem with the prices in this summer of Arcade... are the fact so many other awesome games will come out before and after this. When we had things like Boogy Bunniss and Arcadian Warriors as I generic arcade games, obviously Bionic Commando and Castle Crashers were worlds apart in quality.

But we're getting Blacklight, Hydrophobia, Clash of Heroes, 2002 UM, Shank, Scott Pilgrim, all as non-promo regular releases... it's a much more harsh marketplace now!(With maybe a bit too many big publishers in there, as well...)
