Resistance 2's co-op was amazing, was totally bummed out when they didn't have that in the sequel. Doubt I'll be getting an Xbox One any time soon though, but it is at least nice to see Insomniac try something like that again.

Technically, there shouldn't have to be a difference. Although nowadays for most people online is synonymous with competitive multiplayer. But in reality the full designation would be either 8 player online co-op or 8 player local co-op.

I just don't see the distinction between say free roam in GTA or Watchdogs. Not that it matters I suppose.
