Sunset Overdrive deserves another chance

This game was fun and it along with MCC got me to buy an xbox one in the first place. However, seeing people on Youtube play it and some more casual friends and family. They really messed up the first 2-4 hours of the game.

You're so clunky until that air dash that I think some people stopped playing, watching, and streaming before they got that upgrade. They also didn't do enough to explain that people shouldn't run on the road. I didn't run into this myself but I saw so many people wondering why the game had no music while they got tore up running on the streets.

Also while the DLC was really enjoyable I think they should have tried to get that into the main game to fill it up a bit.

While it sucks that it wasn't a big success I don't think every game needs to turn into a franchise.

Look up the definition of "lesser of two evils" and I think you'll see your analogy there.

Insomniac can make smart compromises when they need to, like when they made Song of the Deep a Gamestop exclusive. But making Sunset Overdrive an Xbone exclusive was just plain dumb and if you want to defend a dumb business decision like that then go ahead but don't be crying for a sequel in the same sentence.

Or maybe people just love to play games instead of being miserable about "business decisions" on forums.

Yeah, and a lot of people will refuse to buy another platform and that's something Insomniac should take into account if they make a game exclusive to Xbox when any moron can figure out that the bulk of their fans are on Playstation.

They sent that game out to die and it did that job admirably.

Damn, I wonder if there are people are this vindicated if Bayonetta 2 bombed, which luckily it did not I think.

And my point was that it was specific to this game and not a reflection of the overall MS brand.

Sunset Overdrive received backlash because it was an exclusive games by a primary Sony developper on another console. I would argue that the backlash would've been the same if it released only on WiiU or PC. Their fanbase is quite obviously on Playstation system because of the decades of exclusives or multiplatform games.

Fair enough, I appreciate your expanded insights, thanks.

I agree with this, I think the player should have been given the full moveset within the first hour. The game really comes to life with the air dash.

It seems people doesn't really like it when Xbox has exclusives that isn't from MS studios.

I mean, you could go console wars here, but it's also a much smaller market so there's higher risk. Ask Rise of the Tomb Raider how these deals have been working out. It's suicide these days.

How dare people who simply play games they are interested in (regardless of console/brand) wish there was a sequel to a game they enjoyed playing!

It's late 2016 right guys? Not 2014? Man.

You got me. My one weakness. You figured out I'm a man and I'm made of straw.

If we're going to reduce every argument to 'you can't argue against wishes!' then let's see...

- I wish Gunpei Yokoi was still alive, even if in a zombified state.
- I wish No Man's Sky was... No Man's Sky from two years ago.
- I wish Sony, Microsoft and Nintendo would all come together to make some sort of mega console.

No one get in my way, how dare you argue against my wishes with your practicality.

You know that one game that constantly tempts you to buy a console you don't otherwise want? The one that says "Hey look, a price drop on console X! You could finally play me!" That's Sunset Overdrive for me.

A PC port would be a dream come true.

One of the few games I really want to come to PC or eventual sequel on PS4. For that matter I'd love a new FUSE.

I know I'm one of few.

Imo traversal was quite good from the get go. The air dash makes it so you practically never touch the ground if you are skilled enough, but even before that I was having a blast with the game just messing around.

I just wish FUSE would come to PC so that the modding community could turn it back into Overstrike.

I actually wouldn't mind playing it as FUSE either tbh. I know it has a bad rep, but it's Insomniac, how bad could it really be?

Waiting any day now for Microsoft to announce a Windows 10 port of it, but not getting my hopes up, because it appears as though they've forgotten about the game's existence.

Loved what I played of the game on Xbox One, but would love that even more at a decent framerate.

I thought port begging wasn't allowed. Try making a petition though. :]
90% of GAF doesn't appear to know what port-begging is. Port-begging is sidetracking a thread where that's not related to the original topic.

Not only does your post fit this description, but it also fits the description of a post which is asking why a thread exists, another thing that's generally frowned upon.

Agree I thought it was really fun before Air Dash too. Air Dash improved it a lot though.

First game has some issues but at it's core it was awesome. It's a shame we'll never get a sequel to see the game fully fleshed out and expanded on.

Still has some of the best boss battles this gen for me, fizzie balloon and the ending boss were amazing.

Yeah -- the game is a blast to play even without the air dash in my opinion.

We would love for it to be on PC

Man. What the hell is holding this back then? It can't be Microsoft's unwillingness, can it? How expensive is it to pay a competent studio like Nixxes or Bluepoint to port a game like Sunset to PC?

Do it guys, this IP has too much potential to just get left behind.

Port begging refers to interrupting or taking away from conversation about a game by making it about the platform. For example, it being impossible to discuss Epic Mickey pre-release because whiny people were mad that it wasn't on PS3/360. For example, people having a meltdown at the Dragon Quest IX announcement. For example, the first reply for literally any XBLA thread for 5 years being "PSN or no buy".

Port begging does not refer to discussing future-proofing legacy titles or expanding their audience. The person in the OP even appears to have purchased the game, so we're not referring to someone saying "fuck these idiots they put it on shitbox zero where's da real version", we're referring to someone trying to share a game he liked with other people by encouraging the game to have a broader audience.

Another way of framing this thread is that Sunset Overdrive quite notably slipped through the cracks of MS's PC strategy. It came out during a time where MS was still pushing Xbox One as hardware rather than Unified Windows Platform. By all accounts the game didn't tank, but it also didn't set the world alight, and the reviews were generally positive. It did not get a port--possibly because of MS priorities in terms of a game that they published but don't own the IP of, possibly because Insomniac has been busy with many projects since then.

It's interesting to walk through Microsoft's Xbox One product portfolio and look at the games that ended up being 100% exclusive to Xbox One:
Forza Motorsport 5 <-- sorta exclusive, but subsequent installment of IP on Windows 10 and it's more like an "annualized" game than something where you'd want to go back to Forza 5 ten years later
Zoo Tycoon <-- Despite being an adaptation of a PC series, made by a studio historically known for PC stuff, and despite lending itself to a KBM interface, no PC release.
Crimson Dragon <-- Japanese dev, built around Kinect
Powerstar Golf
Xbox Fitness <-- required Kinect
Forza Horizon 2 <-- Likewise, Forza Horizon 3 coming to PC
Halo: The Master Chief Collection
Kinect Sports Rivals <-- Required Kinect
Sunset Overdrive
Dance Central Spotlight <-- Required Kinect
Forza Motorsport 6 <-- Apex, future installments of IP coming to Windows
Halo 5: Guardians <-- Forge mode on PC as well as limited online mode, clearly a trial run for subsequent Halo being day and date
Rare Replay
ScreamRide

At this point, I think one could argue given that Kinect is discontinued, Halo 5, Sunset Overdrive, and Rare Replay remain the only Xbox One exclusives that people are really going to want to return to a few years from now (note: there's still plenty of reasons why someone might buy an Xbox One in lieu of playing these on PC, but I mean if ten years from now one did not have an Xbox One, these would be the only ones you'd have to buy an Xbox One to get access to). I think it is interesting the sort of "donut hole" some of this stuff fell into.

Let's not twist what I said.

They choose between owning the IP or releasing it on the platform which gathers most of their fanbase.

And I don't see where you got the information that Sony rejected them, all I saw was that they went with the publisher who would let them keep the IP.

Because they basically SAID that Sony rejected it when they approached them with that plan.

I mean, you could go console wars here, but it's also a much smaller market so there's higher risk. Ask Rise of the Tomb Raider how these deals have been working out. It's suicide these days.

I think CD made it alright with RoTTR. In the very least they made a deal that allowed them to deliver a high quality game full of content that already sold fairly well (Not a gangbuster, but it didn't totally bombed either), and now is on track to launch on Ps4, with extra content that will only get more sales. So all in all the deal was probably worth it depending on how much of the costs Ms covered.

I think a better example of a total disaster of a deal is SFV, both in sales and reception it seems to have fared worse than Tomb Raider.

Yep those examples are definitely comparable to people who simply want a sequel to a game they enjoyed and are having a basic discussion about the game.

Absolutely sad and ridiculous.

I did not like the music at all nor the humour.

I have nothing against over the top humour, because I love Saints Row and random over the top stuff like Family Guy, American Dad and South Park but Sunset Overdrive just wasn't funny to me.

I'd buy A PC version in a heartbeat. With MS going all in on PC, this is the only game left along with Crimson Dragon sans the microtransactions

If they ever did do a sequel they would need to hire Brandon Winfrey back for Sunset TV.
That dude made logging into the game, every week, even more worthwhile. It was such a great idea to have those videos in game.

pretty please?

Completely agree OP

I thought Halo MCC was gonna be the thing to justfiy owning an XboxOne but it ended up being Sunset Overdrive and then some.

Seriously, game is a fucking treasure

It did date the game however. By the time I played the game it was just a short video saying Sunset TV is over and to check Youtube for the older episodes.

Yeah I know what you mean.

Wish they were able to re-run it in episode order as you played, the last few episodes tied into the dlc for the game and was actually really well done.

To this day, Sunset Overdrive is still one of the best games that I have played all generation. When I think of games that feel "next-gen" and complete, Sunset is one of the few games that comes to mind. Beautiful visuals, extremely fun to play, tons of content, depth, an entertaining universe, etc. The only thing I felt that it lacked was campaign coop.

I really do hope we see a sequel sooner rather than later.

If this came to Steam, especially like Quantum Break, would help it dramatically. Would be a win win for everyone. I'd love to play the game too.

It wasn't without it's charms, true, but I found it to be a fairly mediocre experience on the whole that was ultimately pretty forgettable tbh. The story and writing were utterly excruciating though. It's my current go-to example of "trying too hard" on that front.

Game most likely wouldn't have done much better on PS4 considering Rachet and Clank didn't do gangbusters on that system!

It did much better than Sunset Overdrive did though.

The bitterness is pathetic.

Anyways, one of the best games this gen for sure, hope it gets a sequel some time in the future.

One of the few games of this generation that i completely obsessed over, where i collected everything and got all of the cheavo's. It really was this generations Crackdown for me. I feel like if it had some sort of fully fledged out co-op and multiplayer, it could have rivaled Crackdown for one of the most fun open world games ever. It was just too damn fun to maneuver around the city.

It's an alright game, but it wasn't all that great imo. I don't get the hype. It's repetitive and the comedy is cringe-worthy at times.
