I always thought it was G as in Gnome.....
The creators call it Jiff but they can go fuck themselves for all I care.

Gatdamnit.
While there is not yet a hard and fast rule about a "G" before an "I", I submit to you that the pronunciation of a consonant is generally determined by the vowel sound that follows. This is why I find the "giraffe" argument unconvincing, and the "gift" argument more relevant. The "ir" in "giraffe" has a fused sound, like "er". Which is also why people pronounce "Germany" the way that they do.
I also contend that just because the creator erroneously pronounces it "jif" proves nothing. He coined the initial term and created the file format, but that doesn't mean he owns the word.
How exactly can you be erroneous if you create the term lol
nerd lol

woah now.

Because he created the phrase Graphic Interchange Format, not the abbreviation. Also, all of my other points still stand.
So with the website all well and good now...where's the rest of that Super Best Friends Metal Gear Solid 4 ? It was just too one of the best parts, c'mon I need it!

Can't it be whatever people want it to be? Like the legend of Woolie?

Pat has arrived! Hail to the King.
Jiff is correct though. I don't say AM as "Ah Muh" or PM as "Puh Muh" just because the A stands for Ante, the P stands for Post and the M stands for Meridiem.

No, because languages have rules. It's the same reason why I don't walk into a bar and ask for a "beh-er".
My friend, you haven't been to a Northeast bar, especially in Bahh-stan. (boston)
Too bad. For new terms, whichever version gains widespread acceptance first is the real term. No one can come in 10 years afterwards and say too bad you've been saying it wrong, it's out of their hands.
Agreed. If you do so you are dead to me.I don't think I could be friends with people who pronounced gif 'jif'.

I'm so glad Pat was the one to bring wrestling discussion to the thread. Poor Scott couldn't say his words a few times and I don't mean the censorship.
Guys, not to de-rail this thread too much but I just made Ice tea.
By myself.
Without setting my house on fire.
I'm really impressed with myself
At least we're not calling memes "me-me" because I know people who do that.
It's physically impossible.I don't think I could be friends with people who pronounced gif 'jif'.
