Yep. Someone that has $22,000 to spend on a gun is going to shoot people with it. GAF being GAF.

yes? do you think everyone with a beef is a teenager or a homeless drifter? Remember those white supremacists that had a fucking arsenal, intending to kill Obama and take as many people with them? How much do you think an arsenal costs? Guns aren't cheap. This gun will hopefully be traced and tracked, but if this makes sniping 'easy for a novice'...bleh that phrase just makes me shiver.

Well . . . what else are you going to shoot with it? Some meat that you can buy at the store for $5/pound? Targets?

This will be purchased by two different customers . . . people with such a huge gun fetish that they'll spend $22K to shoot targets or whatever. And criminals that will use it to shoot people at a long range.

When was the last time a criminal shot anyone at long range?

One dude in 2003 made a kill at the super long range of <150m, an unheard of distance

Interesting. Gun can be password protected and will not fire unless the computer sees a high chance to actually hit the target. Pulling the trigger does nothing otherwise.

No mention of those safety features in the OP? They sound like a step in the right direction for hardware but I feel we might be able to do more with tech as it improves to limit discharges.
That is not a safety feature. That is a make-it-more-likely-to-kill feature.

What I don't get.... is doesn't this take the whole fun out of hunting?

Yes, that would be covered by the "Some meat that you can buy at the store for $5/pound?"

I can understand sportsmen that go out hunting. But when you have a $22,000 laser guided sniper rifle to shoot game, you are no longer a "sportsman". There is nothing 'sporting' about it. You are person with a gun fetish.

Hey, the Predator had a plasma caster mounted on his shoulder aimed via head tracking and an invisibility generator, and no one ever said he was unsporting. I bet hunting Arnold Schwarzenegger with this rifle would be fun and challenging.

Not everyone that hunts does so for fun. There are animal products that aren't farmed.

Interesting fact : my phone keyboard swiping typing just interpreted 'hunt' as 'gun'.

To be fair, if a gun costs just under the average income for a person, the limited number of people capable of getting their hands on such a device will make it far less likely to be used in a mental way. It's not about whether rich people go on rampages, but about is scarcity.

Yeah . . . we've had a real shortage of long range criminal kills lately. You used to have to be a really good shot or be real lucky. It is great to know that private industry is working hard to solve that problem so that anyone can pull it off so we can up that number!

I'm not sure why, but it kind of bugs me that both this article, and the manufacturer's website both state how "videogame-like" the scope's HUD is.

It's just a laser range finder and it does the ballistics math for you to tell you where to aim. You can make the same adjustments on any scope if you work out your range. The longest shot I have ever taken while I'm hunting is about 300 yards. It would be fun to try and take a deer at 1200 lol.

22k is crazy though.

I never said that. I simply stated that when used legally this is 100% a safety feature.

Criminals don't buy $22,000 rifles. They buy 22 $1,000 rifles. Im just sayin.

They'll buy what they need to get the job done. I doubt anyone will go on some shooting rampage with this. But high profile snipings? Maybe.

I was disappointed when I realized it just shot regular ass bullets, and not, like, course correcting mini-rockets that homed in on where the laser was pointing. But at least it comes with a free iPad!

You used to have to be a good shot/lucky? There are actual grade schoolers who can make an 88 yard shot on a slow moving motorcade. Sniping targets is a rare thing, and at the ranges it happens at your throwing your money away on a 22k gun that only shoots stationary targets when it feels like it

Cars aren't made to kill.

you're right. its a weapon of mass destruction. it pollutes the world and kills our later generations.

yeah i think we solved the crime. the shooter was shooting bullets from the future.

Yeah it removes the need for skill and just tells you where to aim. That's kind of scary tech for the average civilian to have access to.

You said "Not everyone hunts for fun." Besides food and fun what other reason is there to hunt?
Well, pest control. But also, food isn't simply a matter of shooting something and taking it home to eat because you're poor. There are whole parts of the food industry that rely on hunting rather than farming for their meet, such as venison. The people that do this are neither poor, not doing it for fun ; it's just their job.

I believe that's how kangaroos are harvested for their meat and leather.

It is. And of course it's a sport. Are you saying every hunter wants this now or would use it?

I was speaking in the context of this rifle and the argument that it's marketed towards hunters.

Of course I wasn't implying that every hunter wants a 22k auto-aim rifle...

lol. For $22,000 you can pay someone to kill for you. I bet you any amount of money you want that this will never be used in a crime.

That's like saying 4K tv's will never be mainstream.

.50 cal rifles are available for a few thousand dollars. They can stop a car. Truck. Blow someone in half with ease. You can probably take down an airliner with one if you shot the engine on take off. When was the last time one was used in a crime? Criminals look to kill cheap. They aren't going to spend thousands on something that's going to get thrown away after they are used. Why use this thing when you can pay someone a few grand to walk up behind the target and put a bullet in their head with a $300 hand gun?

I'm just saying the tech can easily get much cheaper if more companies start entering this market. Same with people saying that first 3D printed gun is a piece of crap that will not do much of anything. Genie's out of the bottle and tech advances rapidly.

So you're saying gangbangers will now actually hit their intended targets and not the 9 year old playing in the yard?

Gang bangers use little sub $200 tiny caliber pistols. This gun isn't going to kill another human being except in theaters of war due to the price. Anyone who thinks otherwise it an idiot.

When was the last time someone was killed by a civilian with a legal 22k full auto or hell some 8k 50 BMG sniper rifle? Never

Why would you use a freakin BMG? This is a regular rifle with laser augments and computer correction built into the scope. This is different from an anti-materiel rifle.

Wow. They had that whole Warren Commission for nothing. I guess they didn't realize that a grade school kid could have taken him out.

I love how some people are here talking about what people do and do not need when it's not something they care about. Who the hell cares what you think someone else needs.
