Super Mario 3D World only 1.7GB in size [digital download]

Until you beat the first 85 levels and the game pulls a 3D Land.
85 bonus levels revealed as the stamp book turns a page revealing an entire additional set of stamps to collect.

This wouldn't surprise me at all, haha. Right down to the "second page". It's so Nintendo.

So glorified 3D Land map pack confirmed?

Am i doing this right?

The thing is, I'm sure 3D world was well designed and efficient in terms of it's programming. However the 1.7 GB is probably because there's nothing in the game to me that would cause it to be all that bloated. There are no CGI cutscenes. the textures, while artistic and nice looking, aren't super high quality detailed PC level textures. Looking at the game, the maps aren't particularly huge or expansive (versus something like Skyrim). There are some pretty effects and lighting, but nothing that would bloat the amount of storage needed.

All in all, while I would have expected it to be 3-4 GBs, really 1.7 GB to me isn't all that far-fetched looking at the game,

This game has 3DS roots. There is really no need to deny this. Doesn't mean it will be any less fun, but it is what it is technologically.
In the same way that next Killzone has ps1 roots and latest GTA has ps2 roots yes.

e : and 85 lvls? that would be 10 less than NSLU/NSMBU, right?

Wait.. what..

I edited my trolling comment out of my last post but sorry gonna be reinstating it now. Seriously how is that a tiny number. 1 is a tiny number, 13 is a smallish number, 85 is not tiny in any sense of the word, its hyperbolic if anything.

Do you get free trolling rights on this forum once your a member or something?

You need to PM someone to get a free trolling card. It comes with some amazing perks, you should get one.

Even if it's 1 per level, 85 levels is still a tiny number.

You didn't play 3D Land at all, did you? Besides, 85 on its own isn't a tiny number.

I mean shit, 3D Land had 48(x2) levels. Didn't exactly feel ripped off. If 85 is the base number of levels for 3D World, holy fuck.

Stop telling him about gaf gold.

He doesn't need to know.

Also you're completely off base on the level count.

In what universe is 85 considered disappointingly low?

Average, okay but low? Not even close.

It's 2013 and people are still judging games by their file size

smh the snes/jaguar/genesis war is over, you can go home now

Also, Animal Crossing on the Gamecube is 18mb. It's so small that the entire game loads into RAM on boot. You can take the disc out and never need it again as long as you don't reset.

I will admit this was abused so me and my brothers could play Animal Crossing at the same time on both of our GameCubes.

LOL, you're telling me a WiiU game is the size of Pokemon X/Y?
That means compressed non-orchestrated music (probably MIDI), no cutscenes (which Pokemon has and they're gorgeous), limited HD assets, etc.

They are not wizards people, they're just not using many things on this game after all. Oh well, whatever makes Nintendo the big buck, right?

So you haven't watched a single trailer of this game?

Please go away, you are embarassing yourself.

I was making a joke :(

I'm super excited about the game. Tokyo EAD is my among my favorite developers and Mario Galaxy 2 my favorite game of last generation.

Don't be so defensive!

A Little off topic but does the Wii U tablet controller have to be used for Wii U games (Such as all 1st party games) or can you use the Wii mote and classic controller for majority of Wii U games?

Personal pet peeve of mine, but it's not your fault I guess:

It's not a "tablet controller". It's not a tablet.

It's a controller with a touchscreen.

Another embarrassing thread delivered by the supersized generation of NeoGAF.

Quality is now linked to size of game. Killzone is 25 times better than 3D World.

The new PS4 Killzone started out as a Vita project. Just throwing it out there, I mean there is a Killzone on the Vita after all that kinda has the same art style. Do we need more proof than that?

unless you developed the game yourself, you have absolutely no idea what you're talking about.

Wouldn't even consider 85 average. If every stage took four minutes to beat, on average. we'd have 5.6 hours of fun!

That's a whooping 3.29411765 hours of fun ber gigabyte!

Edit: People you really need to stop shitting on "midi". Final Fantasy 12 used sequenced music for crying out loud. (Although, pre-recorded for quality's sake)

... Really?

Come on man, have you seen ANY footage of this game?

Uncompressed soundtrack,
HD assets.

I'd expect a bit more then 1.7 gigs

Art style most likely. Colours are bright however to detail them it does not take as much time as the art style is very simplistic. Looks great in motion though. Notice how cartoony games this gen can tend to stand test of time in the
graphics department like a lot of the colourful mods in counter strike source that take up much less space than
other mods that go for realism

And they also share similar titles and gameplay too! Killzone: Liberation Vita up-port confirmed.

EDIT: Killzone Shadow Fall. Don't know why I put Liberation considering it's one of my most anticipated games of the year.

I know, right? No cinematic pre-rendered cutscenes in a Mario game. What ever will we do?

Haha, sorry then.
My sarcasm meter is not yet calibrated for NeoGAF :P

Ahaha, it's cool.

SM3DW threads are full of either toxicity or vindication so it's not unreasonable to assume it was a drive-by asshole post.

I'm just looking forward to when/if we get a thread devoid of any of that. The game looks too good to be marred by that sort of shit.

edit: wow right on cue

How has Nintendo managed to cram so much goodness into such a small download? We're not sure, but The Legend of Zelda: The Wind Waker HD was also quite a manageable size. Perhaps it's the Nintendo difference at work?

Really!? I mean, really!?! Is this website run and paid for by Nintendo viral marketers?

Actually they're probably just a bunch of blind, clueless fankids with absolutely no grasp on how videogames are actually made. I mean, what more can you expect from a website called Nintendolife? It just screams amateurism.

Hey guys... hey yes you guys at Nintendolife! I'm throwing this one out there as a freebie: Could the difference between Sonic and Mario games *PERHAPS* be due to the fact that Sonic games are typically ridden with shittons of cutscene voiceovers and FMVs, which are localized in multiple languages, two things notorious for taking up massive disc space, and coincidentally two things which Nintendo uses extremely scarcely?

Didn't that occur to you? Well... probably not. Stick to the "Nintendo difference". Fucking losers.

Jesus christ, some of you are absolutely fucking stupid. Equating memory to the quality if game. Galaxy was less than 2GB and still had amazing music and visuals, but no, this was clearly a 3DS game at some point despite the fact Nintendo almost never makes direct sequels on the same platform and that you have no basis aside from the title.

Ugh.

Should be compared to other 3d Marios, not the 2d ones.

Galaxy 1 had 42 galaxies and 49 in Galaxy 2. 64 had 18 courses and Sunshine had the least (not counting secret stages). Of course there are missions withing the levels/galaxies that completely change the surroundings (specially in the Galaxy games).

If the levels in 3D World are the size of Galaxy's, I'll be satisfied.

Damn, Wii U games scrub down to Wii game filesizes! :P

Nothing to really worry about here folks, the game can still be MASSIVE in context to what it's doing under the hood that would require bigger filesizes. Plus, the game could be the exact same length as SMG1/2 and STILL be better than both in all areas.

Only thing I'm sort of peeved about is, Nintendo makes such a big deal about their "optional OST discs". Why not just bloat the filesize up to whatever it needs and give us a complete FLAC soundtrack in-game.
