Super Mario 3D World only 1.7GB in size [digital download]

That would be a good point if Galaxy didn't do exactly the same thing.

Super Mario Galaxy was 3.28GB, 2 was 1.3GB, and we know that the original had a bunch of unused assets.

Seems roughly in line with this. The textures are sharper, sure, but on an absolute scale they're still pretty simple and thus not terribly high resolution.

Roughly 1.5GB more. There's no way that unused assets would account for that much.

If I remember correctly Galaxy had a lot more pre rendered cutscenes.

So can I say that Mario games cost about 1/30th of what it take to make AAA games (assuming most of them are 50gigs)?
It comes down to how many people working on the game and how many work hours they put into it. I have no idea how many people who worked on Super Mario 3D World or how many hours it took to make the game.

Bloated mess compared to efficient game design. Yes the cost difference is probably huge, but to say that based on file size is nonsensical.
Out of curiousity, do you have any examples of what is a bloated mess?

Most AAA games that tack on every feature in the book. The last Tomb Raider for example that had multiplayer.

So it probably wont have pre-rendered cutscenes but will have story cutscenes right? I loathed how 3D land had next-to-no story. All-in-all though 3D World looks great I can't wait to play it, I just the levels are longer than 3D lands, and there is some music variation in the levels.
Can't wait to play through the game as Rosalina though, got to get them Green Stars first! ;P

Doesn't sound (voices) take up tons of space? Also in-game cinematics must reign in that space. Sonic Lost World has a bunch of cutscenes and voices. Probably not 6 gigs worth, but still.

Maybe Koizumi managed to sneak in some light story, but I woudnt bet on it.

To make an amazing-looking HD game using only 1.7GB in the era of 5-50GB games probably means that they favored polycount, animation and lighting over textures, etc. I'm sure it is for the sake of making everything run at a locked 60FPS.

The lack of cutscenes is just as important, of course. Mario don't need no pre-rendered cutscenes.

Great news; but I do find myself torn between the physical version and the digital version. I bought NSMBU on the eshop but miss being able to have a physical disk and box.

Heh, the name of the mission is Mario Wings to the Sky. The rings are all lined up but the last 2 require you to fly up from the last ring.

"Durchfliege alle Münzenringe! "
"Fly through all coin rings"

German name of the level. The obvious hint to the Wing Cap is missing. The cannon is aimed directly at the rings pretty much by default, using it also counts towards earning the star.

I never bothered to revisit the level after getting all stars, so even though I DID get the Wing Cap at some time I'd never noticed either way :D

I see what you mean. Sometimes it could be worth investing into having extra features though, but it could be unnecessary as well, that is true.

Sorry for the late reply, i forgot to answer earlier.

Well, it never looked like a fullfledged WiiU production anyway. So...uh, surprise?
Hopefully EAD Tokyo is putting all their effort into their next game, so we can soon forget about this misery.
