Super Mario Galaxy 1 & 2 out Oct 2nd for Switch, new amiibo announced

I spent a long long time setting up SMG 1 + 2 on Dolphin, 4K texture + UI packs which don't alter the art style in any way, mods turned on to add per-pixel lighting instead per-vertex among other tweaks/fixes which help when you're rendering the game at such a high resolution, like disabled aggressive LoDs for Mario and enemies/NPCs. Having the flick to spin mapped to a button and full gyro support on DS4/Dualsense as well after I gave up on emulating the Wiimote on PC.

It runs at native 8K internally with 2x SSAA, so effectively 16K and then thats all downsampled to an output of 4K. It looks absolutely incredible and runs at locked 60fps. It was funny once I got it all working at 8K and it was such a clean image but even at that resolution AA is required to remove aliasing so there was a very fine jagginess to it, luckily Dolphin has a good quality FXAA implementation which perfectly smoothed out all theose edges with very very minimal loss of detail.

When the tiny Mario (tiny as in the camera is way zoomed out) is suspended in the air the planet select screen in each "room" of the hub he was perfectly rendered on my 65" TV, you could walk up the screen and be a few inches away from it and he was realised with more pixels than he is when he's normal size on the original Wii game ha.

It won't get close to that level of IQ but hopefully something close so I can have a version of it thats pick up and play. What puts me off is that it doesn't look to have any of the fixes that are in Dolphin, even if its running at native 4K with decent AA and some sort of upscaled textures things like that are quite jarring.

I just hope there are ways to play left handed. Im aware on the switch 2 we can remap controls but Im not sure if that works for motion controls. It made skyward sword hd very awkward for me.

I pre-ordered this today only because EB Games has it at 89 doliroos or trade-in 2 eligible games + $29, I did the latter and ended spending only 46 doliroos.

But USD70 in the US is something only seen by Nintendo, sadly this will sell heaps.

In for the Amiibo. Hoping that SMG1 gets an update so I only need to buy SMG2. I would like to buy the physical of both, but $70 is way too much for two Wii games. I don't like $40 for SMG2.

Yeah I don't wanna imagine how emulating the wiimote would look like on these devices
I played all Wii U Mario games on Steam Deck and they function perfectly without wiimote. You got gyro and trackpads and the emulator also removes some wiimote options so you can play seamlessly.

Super Mario Galaxy 2 has been added to Nintendo Music.

I never had that collection because Nintendo decided in their infinite wisdom to make it a limited run product

But good to know. I'll probably pick this one up in October or November
Ah I see. Yeah well I think it worked rather good with the gyro of the pro controller on the collection so no worries there I'd say.

Even though I've got both these on Wii and the first one in the Mario collection on switch , still gonna buy both these, but will wait for physical cart in uk as at min can only see digital

Can everyone from that other thread who were comparing emulated Wii version to compressed YouTube capture and stating the rereleases look like shit and are downgrades... can y'all respond to this thread now we have actual 1 to 1 direct comparisons? I'd like to hear from you now.

Fucking masterpieces…but you know, we'll give it an 8.5. Absolutely fucking retarded review sites.

It depends how you're looking at it really -- like, as the games themselves it's a 10/10, obviously, everyone knows that already though. If you review it on the merits of the port-work / collection aspect it can be a different story. It's not like it's a feature packed collection at a great price -- they've done just enough to merit the port and are charging an absolute premium.

Amazon Japan have knocked 13% off the price making it pretty cheap now at 6947yen which works out at £35.76 for me. Hardly wallet busting if you know how to shop around. it's why it pays to buy from all regions.

I can buy it for almost half the price but I'm like I have already bought 5 games since June, and I should really play them before buying another one

This game just reminds me that Nintendo is just built different. Whatever you think of the remaster enhancements, the original games are just peak creativity. The industry needs more of this. As much as I love AstroBot, it's not even close to these games.

Anyone who missed the Wii experience, your in for a treat.

Honestly, I'm always glad when new people get to try Galaxy out for the first time. It's kind of weird to think about, but the first game is almost 20 years old at this point - there's a ton of people that I'm sure aren't even aware the game exists - this is genuinely new to them.

It's a little ironic, though - when these games first came out, I played through them, did the bare minimum, and didn't have that high of an opinion of them. When I revisited Galaxy 1 in 2015 and actually put it through its paces and did everything, I was astonished by how good it was. I'm not sure exactly what clicked, but my God did it ever click.

You can show them screenshots demonstrating clear upgrades but they still won't be happy because one or two things aren't exactly how they remember it.

It was the same story with the Donkey Kong Country Returns HD remaster earlier this year. I showed evidence of there being clear lighting and texture upgrades in that game, but because some smoke effect visible for a fraction of a second looked subjectively worse, the whole release got written off.

My own view on the DKCR HD remaster is it flatly isn't worth $60. On account of the fact it's a remaster of a 3DS game that itself was a port of what was originally a Wii game. I suppose the Galaxy remaster combo collection I don't feel so strongly about the price being egregious because you get two games for $70 vs one for $60. But I suppose it's subjective. I passionately argued on here in January that $60 for DKCR HD was absolute highway robbery.

I thought it would take me a while to get used to using the whole handheld to aim and fire the stars, but that probably only took me like 5 minutes to master.

Game is special.

I agree the price was wrong for DKCR. It's the only thing I can hold against it. If it was $30, or $40 tops, I think people would've been more charitable with the release.

Played a bit of SMG2 last night, docked, with the new Pro Controller. Motion stuff seems fine so far. Tapping the two shoulder buttons to recenter is nice. The game looks phenomenal. This is what All Stars from five years ago should have been.

Holy shit, these games look great on the Switch 2. Some motion control stuff is annoying but it works fine with a controller.. Unplayable with joycons for me.

Both games are such gems, it's almost shocking how much better they both are compared to Super Mario Odyssey.

If I buy the digital bundle do they get their own individual game title on the switch menu or are they combined as a single game?
