I have an older Wii from launch day and my nephew just got a Wii for Christmas ..For some reason Mario Galaxy wont boot on his but it works fine on mine?? On his the game is recognized and the Mario galaxy animation is shown on the Wii menu ..but soon as you try to load the game it goes to a black screen and then it reboots back to the Wii menu.. Every other game I have works fine on his (8 other games), Any ideas?

In case anyones wondering both Wii's are unmodded.

Bad disc drive?

Do other games work on the same Wii?

Yep I tried a bunch of games and they all boot up fine on his. Galaxy is the only game that wont boot ..The disc itself has a few small scratches but nothing major.

I was going to say you have a bad disc but it works on the old Wii.

Call Nintendo. They're one of the best companies in all of gaming when it comes to replacing stuff. Your Wii, the game, they'll take care of you.

I've had my Wii since launch and it has just started doing that to me, every time I go to start a Wii game after staring the game it goes back to the wii menu after going to a black screen. However it does just fine if I turn it off and try again.

Every major first party release seems to cause hiccups for me. These mandatory firmware updates Nintendo puts on their discs are turning out to be major anti-hype whenever I try and play a new game for the first time. I never had a problem with my Wii until I first played Corruption and the update caused immediate disc read errors. Ever since then my Wii periodically freezes up when I put a game in, forcing me to remove the disc and restart.

Likewise, Super Mario Galaxy froze the system completely for about 20 minutes while trying to load a firmware update the first time I put it in. I purposely have kept the console disconnected from the internet to avoid these sorts of problems, and I loathe all the Trojan horse crap they're pulling with their software. It's a shame because until this generation I've always found Nintendo products extremely reliable.

I've had the same problem as the OP with Medal of Honor Heroes 2 and Resident Evil: UC.

Yeah big time, they'll personally send mario to your house to fix the issue.

Sounds like you have to try blowing on the cart.

But no I am really interested in what would be causing this as I have heard a few people have boot errors for certain titles of late.

How do you get game specific updates?

You pop the game in and it usually asks you to update (which you can accept or decline), pretty much is the exact same process as updating over the Internet.

If you try to tell Nintendo this problem they wont believe you.

Actually, I called about my DS Lite and mentioned that my Wii system was sometimes getting a disk error message when trying to boot Galaxy. They said it was an intermittent problem that they haven't pinned down yet, and want me to mail in both my system and copy of SMG so they can inspect it. Supposedly it's a somewhat rare problem.

try checking to see if there is save data for galaxy on the new wii, if there is, delete it and try again.. i'm not sure why that would help, but you may as well give it a shot

A co-worker of mine had the same problem. After 3 disc replacements, he got his wii replaced. (it was a bit strange because his wii-sports and zelda worked just great)

I think it's because Mario Galaxy (and games released afterward) used a new copy protection. If the drive is on the way out, it's likely stumbling on the new media checks.

Microsoft have had a similar situation recently where they've been unbanning Xbox 360's because failing DVD drives that suffer from DRE's send the same errors as modded ones.

Really? I told Nintendo my Wii drive was 'a bit noisy' since I got Galaxy, and though they 'couldn't reproduce the problem', they switched the drive anyway and its super quiet again now.

The other day Endless Ocean froze on me, and everytime (and I mean EVERYTIME) my Wii's reading a disc it makes the most god-awful clunky racket.

Maybe mine's on it's way out too? EEEP!

Anyone else's Wii give off a high-frequency whine when switched ON? Not sure if it's the Wii itself or the second-party universal powersupply I am using...

you check your tcp/ip settings?

This is the most likely option. Starting with SMG and continuing foward, Nintendo put a stronger protection into the game. It also hunts for any type of mod chip if there is one installed. the game will not boot if it finds one, however, because of the difference, maybe it just doesn't recognize it as a normal Wii for some reason.

Happened to me...then i just plugged out my wii, put in MP3, took it out, put back in SMG, and it has worked fine ever since.

worst backward compatibility ever.

it's probably a disc problem, try to clean it and try again,if it doesn't work use the warranty

My Wii also installed a Mario specific update the first time I put it in. If you're not seeing that, then maybe its just not kicking off for whatever reason. Reset the networking or something. Who knows.

Yeah it attracts bugs.

I would definately do as they ask. The great thing about Nintendo is they have the best customer support in any industry, let alone the videogame industry. Just be sure to backup your channels and game saves to an SD card before you send it off.

Have you tried clicking the disc channel and seeing if it prompts an update? There is an update on the Mario Galaxy disc that is apparently required to play the game.

I had the same issue for a few seconds when I got the game, but I clicked on the disc channel and it began an update and worked fine after that.

That happens to me when I try to play Twilight Princess.

No horrible scratches, and it gets all the way to the "Select a File" screen, yet the same black screen and message pops up when try to go any further.

this is a common problem with wii cosoles that nobody really talks about. youre going to have to send your system into customer service. call 'em

they'll get you fixed up in no time

dang that sucks. If I were you (or your cousin), I would return the system since he just recently got it. Let the store know what is going on and I think they should have no problem exchanging it. When I first got the Wii, I had to return it because the controllers wouldn't sync and the store had no problem with exchanging it for a brand new one

The store they got the Wii at is out of town so we decided to call Nintendo, they want both the console and mario galaxy but I guess they'll take care of it.. im sure its not the super galaxy disc since it reads fine in my Wii ..but even when I told them that they still wanted the game.

Do as they ask, I've heard N is pretty good with getting your stuff fixed promptly.
