Super Mario Maker Overview Trailer

And that amiibo scrolling at the end confirms one thing: Sonic is a compatible amiibo. Mega Man, too. I bet I can guess his sprite.

Now I need a Sonic.

Don't worry you can unlock them on the game itself if you don't have certain amiibo! (As far as I know, someone correct me if I'm wrong)

What the fuck is this "wait the next day for new unlock tools" bullcrap? I get why they did it with Splatoon, but this isn't even a game, it's a creative tool. Why limit people from day 1? If it's to not intimidate new players why not have, like, a "basic" mode where you only get simple elements? Still excited for Mario Maker, but this is a huge disappointment.

I'm an adult. I think I can handle all the tools at once.

For a game like this, they still need to consider user onboarding experience and initial quality of user-created levels out of the gate. A standard game tutorial or whatever wouldn't really work here. This isn't a bad way to handle it, and there's probably no perfect way to do this.

I have this pre-ordered and don't know if I'll keep it yet. I fear almost all user created levels will be try to be as difficult as possible without the brilliance of something like Kaizo Mario. Hope I'm wrong!

Using your own voice clips will probably be only for offline courses. I really dislike the gradual rollout of assets despite understanding why they chose to do it that way.

I'm keeping mine, if only so that my son can experiment. I'd also worry that most things online will be too easy. People will try to make some insane level, not be able to beat it, and just continue to water it down until there's not much left but the basics.

Edit: And to the hate that's building on paced tool release...eh. It feels sort of arbitrary I admit, but it's not a game changer. For me, anyway.

This tool-unlocking shit not only hampers the player's capabilities in making levels, but it's going to make the first wave of user-created levels incredibly basic since this is all anybody is going to have to work with.

Want to play a Bowser level? You'll have to wait three fucking days after launch.

This just in: adults do not need to be taught anything, ever.

ANYWAY it's kind of a drag, but it is what it is. It'll encourage me to make more levels at least, and ensure that I don't ignore half the tools. I'm in no rush.

So wait. It's hardly worthy of the level of anger/disgust that would prompt you to write "three fucking days."

Aaaahhh! That Mario Paint music! :DD

Aah I was wondering what that was supposed to be. No wonder I didn't get it as I never played it. The sound effects look great especially since they come with visual effects too. The music blocks remind me of LBP music levels. I wish Luigi and Kirby didn't require amiibos to play as, but other than that cool.

I don't think that messing with the system clock will help.
At worst it'll be like in Pokemon where you get punished for trying

Would be nice if there was a workaround for some people. They said you had to play for a minimum amount of time as well, so that may be the way to ensure that people have to at least mess with the tools some before they can move the clock forward to unlock more. Maybe?

The Amiibo characters shown are only featured in the 8-bit SMB1 levels - does anyone know if they will still be 8-bit sprites if you try to include them in SMW / NSMB styles, or will they have different graphical styles? Or can you only use them in SMB1 type levels?

How about having a system where you have to create, say, 5 levels that you can actually finish before you're allowed to use the full toolset? That would certainly get people adjusted to the game before letting them go crazy. I think limiting tools for full days is an awful way of handling it. Anybody buying Mario Maker is going to be itching to realise all their crazy ideas but will have to wait several days before they can.

Well, I got enough other amiibo to make something fun. The obvious would be trying out Inkling Squid vs. Bloopers or doing a Fire Emblem relay. Sonic in Mario is just the perfect amount of wrong, though.

Honestly, I look forward to trying the editor out. Got some silly, but not completely Kaizo Mario ideas that I want to try. Although, I wonder how you make invisible coin blocks... and if you can put anything in them.

The Mystery Mushroom that unlocks them turns into the Leaf in SMB3, Cape in SMW and Propellor Mushroom in NSMB

I guess they're applying the Splatoon gear schedule to unlocking tools in this game.

They shouldn't have to do that for a creative game like this. I understand not wanting to overwhelm players, but why not have a tutorial mode to start or something? People are going to want all the tools as soon as possible!

The fact that people are freaking out about having to wait 9 days for a couple extra features is absolutely ludicrous.

It takes a few days to unlock everything though. What's the point? Why not have them unlock immediately.

I mean it's not that much of a deal breaker and more of an annoyance but it doesn't make much sense to implement it that way.

I guess they're doing it like how splatoon did? Still dumb.

Will reviewers have all the content? If not this is gonna get slammed.

I wonder if you could get away with shouting "CUNT" as a sound effect and hiding the trigger really well so that the content moderators don't find it.

Glad to see the 3rd party amiibo work, and even more so that the Pokémon ones FINALLY function with anything that isn't Smash.

I'd like to have everything unlocked day one too, or at least, make it so you can unlock it faster yourself (that idea of new batches unlocking every 30 minutes suggested earlier works, too). That said, I find the outrage in this thread blown out of proportion. Yes, it's a nuisance, but at the very worst, it's little more than a week after launch (and this is in the case that you can't, indeed, mess with the internal clock). I find it real hard and surprising to feel actual rage at this.

If you don't have any idea for a cool level or 2 with only using that tileset you lack some imagination.

Or a combination of both?
Like either wait a day or create 5 levels.
I mean I prefer waiting a day if the toolset I have is shite and have a writer's block in creating a level.
Having everything all at once is a terrible idea though.

they probably don't need to play the level, it's probably a list of assets that the moderators will be able to sample.
Otherwise they've a system that's dumber than I thought.

9 DAYS to unlock all of the tools? Wow that's stupid.

Finally they reveal what the frog button does. Disappointed it apparently doesn't let you customize the course music. Some of the effects you can make it trigger are cool, though.

Yeah I'm wondering this as well. If you play a NSMB themed level and you grab an amiibo block do you will play with the character in 3D?? That would be insanely cool.

You ever play the original Mario games? there's a lot of versatility in just those alone. The best thing about Mario game in general is that how they can use so few things to make such creative and imaginative levels.

Look at Super Mario Bros. 1 and 2 for the biggest and easiest example of excellent obstacle courses with just the basic of items.

I understand wanting all the tools at once, but even so few can give you a great deal to create your stages in a variety of ways. And I am disappointed as well because I wanted to test recreating a couple of Mario 3 stages, but a week is a minor annoyance compared to how long I may be playing this when I can get it.

This is really stupid.

You can't put goddamn fire flowers down on day 1. What the hell were they thinking?

They don't show up. Amiibo forms are only for 8bit mode. Notice how when they're showing the various tool menus, the AMiibo mushroom is replaced in non 8bit modes (With the propeller mushroom, Racoon leaf and Feather/Cape for the respective eras).

I would imagine the moderators would have devtools to inspect the contents of any custom SFX included in a level. That's how I'd do it, anyway.
